Add me to the minority, too. 10,000 Days second only to Aenima in my book. Well, I can't choose which is best. All albums hold different meanings and feelings for me. Maynard spilled a lot of private life into 10K Days and I think he's regretting the Wings duo at live shows.... which fucking pisses me off because they are BEAUTIFUL! Why do people go to concerts if they can't shut the hell up and let someone play a god damned song? Don't like the song... go get a drink or take a piss break. That's what I do.

PS - Before bashers start in on Maynard if they haven't already (I'm not going through a million pages of responses) NO, he's not an asshole.. he CAN be, but in general out of the Tool element he ROCKS! Met him during APC first headlining tour.. not a meet and greet, so the environment allowed him to be himself without a bunch of nutty fans. LOL I know how to behave in that environment..... won't brag further because it's unecessary and kind of rude. smiling smiley

Put me in the minority as well. And if I had a bunch of crazed fuckhead fans, I think I'd be an asshole too. Just sayin'.

I don't think we're a minority anymore; I, too, adore 10,000 Days.

And yeah, I don't get people's beef about Maynard not staring lovingly into the audience's eyes while he's singing. Enjoy the music & the visuals. This does not make him an asshole.

It does not...

But his attitudes towards cameras, live dvd's, live recordings, changing up the setlist, etc, etc, etc, DO make him a douche.

I still <3 though

Maybe not the minority on this forum. But who knows.

10,000 Days duo is like the best on the whole album (though, the other songs hold their own also, imo). I had those two songs on repeat for like a week with only one or two other non-Tool songs. Just something about them that sets em apart. Their not your crowd rockers like past work and they weren't made to be (to my knowledge).

If you guys are into that kinda shit, Lateralus (song) is RIDICULOUS on shrooms (must use headphones)

Tool is Adam's band, runs on Adam's schedule, and plays Adam's setlists. i don't know it as fact, of course (who would besides the band and crew?), but it stands to reason if you look at the lengthy breaks and what occurs during them (i.e. music videos and composition), and the fact that the band's setlists stay pretty static because the visuals dictate the shows.

First and foremost, Maynard has said for years he chooses to stand BEHIND or ASIDE his band. You can read any legitimate interview, taped interview, etc and he will say this himself. He doesn't like to be "that lead singer" because he has ALWAYS been strictly about the music and that's a known fact. I LOVE that about him. Who needs to see more than a shadow? My Tool experiences at shows supercede most shows I go to for the mere fact is I don't have to keep up with what Maynard's doing. haha (That's a joke). But in all honesty, it's not keeping fans away is it? His persona in APC gave us what we wanted.. him in front like the early days of Tool shows. He was insanely visible for their first headlinging show and then drifted to the side for Thirteenth step.... yet again.. people STILL go see him even if they can't see him. hahaha

To address the setlist issue... I'm sure as you guys know by seeing the last several NIN tours... look at all the production involved. Do you guys honestly think with an enormous setup that you can just start changing songs around every night? You might get ONE or TWO songs changed up here and there, but mostly the setlist stays the same. I don't think some people get the work involved in a production of Tool's magnitude when they play. Also, many fans don't travel to see them 4,000 times a tour.. some people only get one experience so they don't even know about the setlist. Those of us who can go to other shows already know what to expect and that takes the wind out of some sails for a few... but again, you keep seeing them, huh?!

Tool is NOT Adam's band - they stand very strong on it's FOUR members, however, Maynard insists it's THREE people and he merely contributes lyrics. They collectively discuss the production and what they want and where they want it. Adam merely creates it and turns it into fruition. Maynard writes his lyrics around what the rest of the band creates (mostly). Every band is different.. enjoy AMAZING music for YOURSELF.. not because of what you think the band should or shouldn't do. Unless you're in their shoes.. STFU! And, I mean that in the nicest way. lol (Neurosynapsis although I quoted you.. this was just to make a few points - the rest is just to people in general. NO ill will).

Why compare Tool to Pink Floyd? There hasn't been enough history for that. I wasn't disappointed with neither Days album, nor Lateralus, maybe because i got into them after the Days came out. I don't particularly dig their videos, but i find great moments in each album of theirs. More to say, i'd like to know other bands which sound like Tool in Opiate and Undertow, any recommendations?

05/27/09 8:01 AM

geez dont you guys know you can't be a real tool fan unless you hate 10k?

So I guess throw me into the poser minority as well because yeah 10,000 days is fucking awesome.

I actually DO like how maynard stands off to the back/side. It's an awesome formation that they have, and quite possibly the only band I'd let that type of performance slide (ie stand in one place and play music)

Not changing up setlist everynight because of visuals is BULLSHIT. I don't want an entirely new setlist ala NINJA, but a few songs here and there that are different like EVERY OTHER GODDAMN BAND OUT THERE.

And hell, I don't even mean on a night to night basis, I mean on a YEAR TO YEAR BASIS. No more schism! No more sober! NO MORE SCHISM!

I have various live recordings of Tool. It's the same extended STINKFIST break, same extended schism, same fucking shit.

Once again, don't get me wrong, I would still GLADLY pay 200 bucks for a pit ticket (oh yeah, Maynard hates pits too. FUCK), but there's ALOT of douchey things about the band (which I mainly attribute to Maynard) that I hate.

But whatever, he is a hooker with a penis, and I constantly and gladly send him more money.

My point was well taken. People still dish out the cash to see the band! Dawn+1. So why complain if you already know what they're going to play.. SCHISM, SOBER, STINKFIST... some songs are staples. It's that simple. Didn't you hear Trent play the fuck out of Closer? The song most people love because it says "i want to fuck you like an animal" *rollseyes* THANK GOD we are getting random stuff, more obscure songs. I LOVE that he's doing that.

Anyway, I don't see how you can blame stuff on Maynard when you don't know him. LOL Guess what.. he hates cigarette smoke too.. including in the crowd.. in venue's that allow it. What a douche for not wanting to fuck up his throat with smoke or getting it second hand. Josh Freese used to get bitched at, but would blow Maynard off. hahaha *loves Josh* He hates when fans put him on a pedastal as if he's God. He's trying to raise a son as people stalk him at home - his son is another reason he chooses to stay lowkey at shows - now with his wine, maybe that's changed. He moved away from L.A. because of the glitz and glamour and nonsense - he wanted a quiet "normal" life, so he moved to AZ. The list goes on. You know, successful bands or celebrities are human beings too. They have good days and bad days. Days when they want to punch someone haha... and everyday normal shit we ALL go through. Maybe he's an asshole sometimes. But you're making it out to be "he's a douche who won't take pictures" who cares??! I'm telling you Tool has a LOOOOOTTTTTTT of CRAZY fans.. they come out of the woodwork like roaches and are scary. hahaha Seriously. I don't blame the guy one bit to not want to be caught in any situation with a nutso.

The visuals and set up for shows and not changing shit up... I refuse to argue with someone who doesn't understand that. Believe what you choose... again, you're still going to Tool shows. "Fuuuuuuuuuuck you, buddy!"

I realise he's lived here for something close to 15 years now, since you mentioned that.

They need to find better SSL guys then because every other band that I listen to doesn't have a problem with it (changing shit up).

Again, I bitch about it but at the end of the day, Tool makes some of the best fucking music out there.

So, in conclusion, let us just agree to disagree and fire up a nice round of Lateralus.

Oh yeah, in the ultimate SEEEEEEEND MORE MONEY I have 6 bottles of MJK signed wine =X

hahaha.. I was just sayin'...

I don't have any wine and I'm a mad wine lover. (I'm Italian). I just haven't collected my thoughts about his wine yet. I'm picky. lol Oh and GOD FORBID (is that one word or two?) you bring up Tool to a wine signing. LOLOLOLOL Dead meat! haha I'm being serious!

Puscifer.. meh! I like 4 songs and that's it.

They are different ventures that's why! When Maynard was blogging for Wine Spectator - which he still might be, I've let my subscription lapse so I don't know - we'd all be having a fine conversation in the comments section (including M) about corks or something & someone would come along & post "TOOL ROCKS!!!!" Really ruined the moment.

As for the wines, they are good. Judith is the first one made completely out of Arizona grapes, I believe, but our climate is very conducive for growing them & they are tasty. I've had grape vines myself before; they need some babying, but they really do well here.

haha, how dare anybody mention Tool at anything but a Tool function lol

I checked out WS/the internets on MJK's wine before going, and reviews were generally favorable. He has a blog on WS I think (er wait, I guess HAD [www.winespectator.com])

I didn't like Puscifer at all the first time I listened, but I went to a show and was pleasantly surprised. Different, but if you go in there with an open mind I think you'll like what you hear.

Not to be snotty... but I know this about Maynard's wine VS. Tool. Neurosynapsis and I were going back and forth about Maynard and I was being sarcastic in relation to Neuro's thoughts about MJK.

I am REALLY picky about wine. I'm sure I will buy his at some point. I don't care if it's signed or not. I guess I'd keep the empty bottle. The purpose for me would be just to drink the wine. I'm curious, but haven't felt compelled to try it yet. Have you tried Judith or is it not ready?

Hmmm. Maybe I'll ask for a bottle for my birthday.

I haven't listened to Puscifer in awhile. I know for sure there are 4 tracks I really like. Sometimes I have to put a cd away and pick it back up again down the line, and it will hit me in a different light.

It wasn't ready when I bought it. MJK said year wait so it's got a few months left.

Yeah man, me too. I listened to Puscifer once, was w/e about it, and then went to the show on a whim. TR was there too with his lady, but bounced after a few songs.

I wouldn't kill, but I might participate in violence of some form for that! Somewhere, and I'd have to really search because it was so long ago, but I believe I heard, read, saw in an interview or something, that either Plant or Page said Tool's cover blew them away. Something like that... I could be wrong. Doubt it. LOFL

I am hoping to see Commando this time around. My favorite Ramones song and one that Tool has been known to play. I will enjoy whatever they decide to play as always.
