Velvet Revolver

One of my favorite bands of the past ten years. A real dynamic mix of (obviously) STP and GN'R.

I thought Scott and Slash made a great combo and there was some real chemistry there. It was great to see Slash, Duff and Sorum making music together again.

Contraband was great, and Libertad, although it stiffed, was also terrific (although maybe to "pop" sounding for some fans).

It's a bummer that Scott's no longer with them, but they seem close to finding a new singer. According to this quote, looks like it will be harder rocking:

"When Scott was out of the band and we came back to L.A. we just started doing some writing and we just went back to the way we normally would write, which is pretty heavy anyway." He continues, "We sort of altered things a little bit to fit Scott, but now, this, we're gonna do stuff our way and then try and find someone who can sing it the way that it should be sung."

Velvet Revolver hoping to announce new singer soon

By Gary Graff

DETROIT (Billboard) - More than two years after dumping original lead singer Scott Weiland, the remaining members of Velvet Revolver are in the "dating" stages with an unidentified replacement, according to drummer Matt Sorum.

"The guy we're liking now is a young guy, a very strong guy ... a little bit heavier rock 'n' roll than we are," Sorum told Billboard.com.

He said the prospective frontman has been in other known bands before. "He's a guy we've had our eye on, but the timing wasn't right."

Sorum says he, guitarists Slash and Dave Kushner and bassist Duff McKagan worked with the singer earlier this month. Velvet Revolver is planning to hit Sorum's Hollywood studio again in January to start recording songs.

"(Writing) is a lot of the way we've been trying out singers," Sorum explained, "and a lot of the reason we've had trouble trying to pick a guy, because we really need to hear that truth. We can't just jump out there with any singer. We've got to make the right decision ... a guy who can front a rock band of this caliber and be a strong enough frontman to go out in front of Slash and be that guy. We need to hear that vocal, that lyric, that melody. It's not an easy thing."

Nevertheless, Sorum said the band was impressed that the frontman candidate "has a work ethic similar to ours" and also brings a "modern" edge to the group. "I've always stressed to the band that we need to be current," Sorum noted. "I don't want to go out there and make retro rock 'n' roll music. We have to take in the environment and parlay that into a rock 'n' roll outlet."

Velvet Revolver's timetable is somewhat up-in-the-air. Slash plans to be on the road promoting his solo album into the summer, including a stint opening for Ozzy Osbourne. Sorum, meanwhile, is producing a new album for the Runaways' Cherie Currie. Still, he hoped the band would be able to announce its singer soon and be active "at least by fall" of 2011.

Velvet Revolver's debut album, 2004's "Contraband," was a surprise hit and yielded a Grammy. But sales for the 2007 follow-up, "Libertad," were disappointing. Weiland was ousted in early 2008, with the band citing his "increasingly erratic on-stage behavior and personal problems." The band split with its RCA Records label in late 2008.

I was hoping Todd Kerns would get picked as the new lead singer. He's a good vocalist & bassist.
I think Slash found someone else, not sure who. At least Todd still has his Sinners.

I didn't notice there was a VR thread here. I'm a pretty big fan of theirs, saw 2 of their concerts back in 2007-2008. After the one in 2007 (Merrilville, IN), I noticed we had parked by the tour busses, so I got creepy and hung out until Matt and Slash headed back to the busses and I got a few autographs. They're pretty awesome guys.
And Libertad took a while to grow on me, but it's one of my favorites now.

According to a new Twitter posting by VELVET REVOLVER drummer Matt Sorum, the band just completed a four-day writing/recording session "with an amazing singer" which produced "nine killer demo tracks."

Regarding the group's search for a new vocalist, Sorum writes, "[We're] going to make the decision one way or another this week."

MATT SORUM On VELVET REVOLVER: 'We've Still Got Something To Prove' - Jan. 11, 2011

Jon Wiederhorn of AOL's Noisecreep recently conducted an interview with VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES drummer Matt Sorum. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Noisecreep: How has the audition process been going?

Sorum: We tried out a lot of new guys, and basically it's quite a process. Scott Weiland is one of the best frontmen out there. And I've been in bands with Axl Rose and Ian Astbury. Those are big shoes to fill. So we're looking for a tried and true individual that can mesh with guys like us that have been out there doing this for a long time.

It hasn't been an easy task, and that's why it's taking a long time. But we don't want to come out half-cocked. We want to create something that people are gonna go, "Wow, that's awesome." We've had a couple situations where we've been with some singers, and we've pulled out of because we didn't feel completely secure in the fact that going forward the guy was the right move.

We tried out some fairly unknown guys and some guys that have been out there a little bit. But the guy we're really excited about know is a pretty known guy. I don't want to say anything yet because we're still in the dating phase. We haven't consummated the relationship or made a gentleman's agreement. So I can't let the cat out of the bag until there's an official stamp of approval on the deal.

Noisecreep: How will the next record be different than "Contraband" or "Libertad"?

Sorum: "Contraband" had sort of a punk rock element to it. When I listen to it, I feel like it's got a lot of angst to it. When I was making that record, I wasn't newly sober, but I had been sober a little bit. I remember I was still trying to feel comfortable in my own skin. And that angst came off useful for us.

There's an energy that says, "Man, these guys still have a lot of vitality in them." And when I listen to "Libertad", I feel like that album's something that we sort of weren't [into] at the time. It took a turn more for the singer in the band. Scott wanted to make a certain kind of record, so that became more his thing. "Contraband" was already written before Scott came into play. He just gravitated towards the songs and wrote the lyrics and the melody. "Libertad" was more an album based around what his lyrics and vision was, and it came off a little lightweight.

Noisecreep: It sounds like your next record might be more like "Contraband"?

Sorum: Well, that's the goal and I know we're fired up about it and that's the beauty about these guys in the band. I can look at all of them and know that they're passionate enough about making the music and they have enough drive left in them. In a way, we've still got something to prove. It's more about outdoing ourselves and trying to be the best we can be.

The goal now is to get right back together [this month] and make a call on the singer. Slash is going to finish out his tour through the beginning of the summer, and then hopefully by that time we'll have a bunch of songs compiled. We all work on our own, and send each other ideas and work together when we got breaks. And maybe we'll take a few more weeks to write, get in the studio and record an album by the end of the summer to get it out by the late part of 2011. I'm looking forward to that. We've all had enough time to go out and live other lives and have an adventure and organically come back as a unit that wants to do it again.

I found it interesting that Scott had so much influence on the second album as opposed to the first. I actually think it's the better of the two.

Slash talks about his tour with Ozzy, the search for Velvet Revolver's singer, and Axl's latest accolade
by Dan Snierson
Break out the top hats and Les Pauls: Slash kicks off a tour with Ozzy Osbourne on Jan. 16 in Omaha, Neb., in support of his 2010 solo album, Slash. Before he hit the road, the Velvet Revolver guitarist and ex-Guns N’ Roses axeman riffed on a variety of music topics with EW.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can fans expect from the set list this time around? It sounds like you’ve been playing a wide swath of material from your career.
SLASH: The tour started last March and we took a break, and now we’re starting up again. We’ve been doing a lot of songs off this new record, some Guns stuff, some Velvet stuff and a couple Snake Pit songs. And it’s really cool when we’re doing a headlining set [Slash will perform on his own in some cities] because we really f—ing dig in there and pull out these cool gems. But for the Ozzy tour, it’ll be combinations of those things. It’s a 50-minute set, so it won’t be a lot of either. But at the same time it’s going to be a really cool, very entertaining, dynamic 50 minutes.

Any surprises you can tease?
There are a couple songs that I broke out for this next leg which we haven’t played on the whole tour, so there will be a couple surprises if you went to any of the other shows. If you’ve never been to a show, the whole thing’s a surprise. But give you hints? No.

Will you play with Ozzy?
We haven’t talked about any of that kind of stuff. I haven’t seen him because he’s been on tour and I’ve been on tour, so when we get together, we’ll see what happens. Ozzy’s very, very focused and he gets in a zone doing his show, so I don’t have any expectations of disrupting that. But you never know what will come out of just being in the same environment for a couple weeks.

If you could join him for any song, what would it be? “War Pigs”? “Crazy Train”?
“War Pigs” is a good one. I played “Paranoid” and “Iron Man” with him before so we’ll see. Any Black Sabbath song I’m down for.

What’s the timeline for making a decision on the new singer for Velvet Revolver?
There’s a short list of people we’re looking at right now but we haven’t made any decisions…. A decision will be made one way or another I would imagine in the coming weeks.

How many people have you narrowed it down to?
There’s a couple people and I can’t tell you who they are but they’re all good. Pretty much everybody has been really, really good. It’s just trying to find the right fit and the right style, and somebody who just gets it.

Are there names we know?
There’s one guy that’s definitely pretty well-known.

When will you go into the studio with the new singer?
I’m on the road through April, and then we take a break, so we’ll see what happens.

Was Duff McKagan’s departure from Jane’s Addiction also related to Velvet Revolver ramping back up again?
I don’t think he ever intended to stay in Jane’s for the long haul. I think he was just there in the writing process with those guys. And I’m not sure exactly how that ended or whatever happened, but I don’t think it was a permanent thing.

Let’s talk a lot about the intense video for “Beautiful Dangerous” (which features a seductive Fergie drugging Slash and tying him to her motel bed). What do you remember about filming it?
It’s easy to read more than there really is going on in that. Fergie’s just Fergie. I said, “I want to do a video,” and she goes, “I got an idea,” and she had her character mapped out. That’s the way she is. Every time I’ve ever worked with her, she knows exactly what she wants to do, how she wants to do it, and she just does it. I love that about her. She said she wanted to be this overzealous stalker fan, which was in its own way a huge compliment to me, you know? That she would even entertain that idea about me. I was like, “Okay, that’s cool.” At least it wasn’t my idea because I don’t think I could have done that for myself, but she’s singing the song, so fine. But anybody who reads into it like, “Oh, it’s really sexy” — it was just her being herself and me being myself, just thrown into this idea and being very comfortable with each other because we’ve been friends for awhile.

Still, it’s great that you were willing to suffer for your craft.
Listen, there’s nothing one can complain about being around Fergie in that attire.

Did you see that MusicRadar.com poll in which Axl was voted the greatest lead singer of all time?
I did. I thought that was actually pretty f—ing cool.

You did?
Yeah. All things considered, we may have had our differences and this and that and the other, but I will never undermine the fact that I thought Guns N’ Roses, when it was originally together, was one of the best rock bands, and Axl has always in my mind been one of the best frontmen/lyricists in rock and roll, period.

Would that have been your vote?
It might have been. I never stop to even think about it — there’s him, Roger Daltrey, Steven Tyler, Robert Plant, Mick Jagger…. I’d probably say Mick Jagger, only because Mick has been doing it for so long and he’s one of the most charismatic frontmen of all time. But if I had a Top 5, Axl would be in there. And John Lennon…

How would you feel about Glee doing a Guns N’ Roses song or themed episode?
Actually, we got asked about that once already but it got turned down. In the current climate of what’s going on in entertainment these days, I try to be more optimistic than negative because it’s really easy to get negative about it, but I draw the line at Glee. Glee is worse than Grease and Grease is bad enough…. When Grease came out I was like, “Oh, c’mon, give me a break.” Actually, I look at Grease now and think: Between High School Musical and Glee, Grease was a brilliant work of art.

Well, velvet is something soft and feminine, like a, I don't know...rose? And a revolver is a firearm, like, I don't know...a gun?

Weiland actually wanted to name the band "Black Velvet Revolver," but the others thought it sounded too much like Stone Temple Pilots. I guess Weiland, as a retro-glam rocker, thought having the word "velvet" in the band would give it some Lou Reed/Bowie connotation.

COREY TAYLOR Addresses VELVET REVOLVER Singer Rumors - Jan. 28, 2011

In a brand new interview that was posted earlier today at Billboard.com, SLIPKNOT/STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor would neither confirm not deny that is the known singer" who's working under wraps with VELVET REVOLVER. "To be continued!" Taylor told Billboard.com with a long, hearty laugh, before declining to say anything further.

As for the future of SLIPKNOT in the wake of bassist Paul Gray's sudden death in May, Taylor said, "I go back and forth. There are moments when I'm like, 'Let's keep going for (Gray),' and there are moments when I'm like, 'It's not the same without him.' Right now my main concern is baby steps. We lost a huge piece of our band. We lost a huge member of our family — in my opinion the biggest — and it's a different vibe now. So right now I'm just taking it step by step, and I can only hope that the other guys in the band are as well."

Regarding the possibility of starting work on a new SLIPKNOT album, Taylor said, "There's a lot of things I've got to figure out about myself before I can even contemplate that. There's a big part of me that wonders if I'm the guy for that band anymore. I'm in such a different place in my life...musically, spiritually. I'm not the angry kid anymore. A lot of things don't mean the same to me anymore, and there's a lot of things I don't feel like saying anymore. Does it make sense anymore? We'll just have to see."

Both VELVET drummer Matt Sorum and guitarist Slash have hinted that the candidate they have recently been jamming with is a "known" artist, and that his style is a little "heavier" than what previous singer, Scott Weiland, brought to the band. Taylor has jammed with the band in the past, although nothing ever came of it.

Sorum gave The Pulse Of Radio a few more clues about the singer the band is looking at. "He's a guy that we've had our eye on but the timing wasn't right," he said. "You know, we don't like stealing people. Weiland was available, you know, he was out of STP. It wasn't like we went and said, 'Hey, dude...' Similar situation with this particular individual. It's cool because we're feeling the guy's work ethic is similar to ours, like, when we mean business, we mean business. We're not gonna dabble in it."

Sorum posted in recent days that VELVET REVOLVER has demoed nine new songs with the mystery vocalist, while both he and Slash have hinted that an announcement about the singer and the band's future will come sometime this month.

Some people are upset about the Superbowl half-time performance, but honestly, I thought it was pretty good. A whole new generation of fans can see Slash, the guitar God, and he's keeping SCOM relevant for people born after the demise of the original GN'R.

Guitarist Dave Kushner got the group back together to honor his late best friend

When Velvet Revolver – Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, Dave Kushner and Scott Weiland – reunite for one show next Thursday at L.A.'s House Of Blues, it will be the result of Kushner. The band's guitarist brought the group back together to honor his best friend, musician John O'Brien, who was found dead at the age of 45 in his Chicago hotel room last August.

"I found out he passed away on August 20, and it was like out of nowhere," Kushner exclusively tells Rolling Stone. "Next day I was in shock and my wife said to me, 'You gotta have a benefit concert for his wife and you have to get Velvet Revolver back together.' That’s how it started."

He then approached the different band members. "We did a benefit show for this thing called Road Recovery – me, Duff, Slash and Matt – in New York, and that’s when I asked those guys individually if they would agree to do it," Kushner says. "Once they said so then I got in touch with Scott, and he agreed."

Kushner says the response was almost instantaneous from everyone, something he attributes to how loved O'Brien – a childhood friend of Kushner's – was in the industry. "[John] was just like a teddy bear. He was the most talented, softest, sweetest, most generous person I’d ever met. He was the brother I never had, and everyone knew him," he says. "I’ve known Scott for 22, 23, 24 years. So he’s known John since then, Duff and John had an amazing relationship, and Matt knew him too."

The concert will also feature Maroon 5, Sheryl Crow, Tom Morello, an appearance from Stephen Stills and more. That will take the pressure off all of the bands, including Velvet. "Because we hadn’t played with Scott in a long time I said, 'Look, let’s just do three songs.' It’s not too much of a commitment," he says. "So we just got a bunch of people, everyone will do three songs."

Kushner is well aware though that everyone will be watching the first time in four years that Weiland performs with the group. "I knew from the beginning it would be newsworthy, and that was kind of the plan," Kushner says. "If you’re gonna do this, you want to raise some serious money, then put all caution aside and say, 'Hey, will you do this?'"

All of the proceeds from the benefit will go to O'Brien's wife and family. "Unfortunately, John didn’t have life insurance at the time and he left behind a wife that's pregnant and a four-year-old son. That to me is the main focus of why I’m doing this," Kushner says. "I’m doing it so that this sells out and that money can go to her, period."

Although the guitarist is focused solely on next Thursday's gig, he understands that others are interested in what the future might hold for Velvet Revolver, but the five of them are taking a cautious approach to any further reunions. "We haven’t played together in four years, and so we’re really just like, 'Let’s see how this goes,'" he says.

And if Thursday's show does go well? "I know everyone’s got other commitments, but I think everyone’s like, 'Let’s get this thing done and get through this and then we’ll see.'”
