Marilyn Manson has been one of my favourite bands for quite a while. I actually got into them before Nine Inch Nails. Over time I've gotten pretty disheartened with them (him specifically).

I wish he still had his priorities in order the way that Trent seems to.

I probably won't get my wish.

I'll be waiting for the new album with quite a bit of anticipation. I'm thrilled that Twiggy is back with him - I just hope it's not a waste of his time and talent.

Prove us wrong, Manson!

Now that twiggy is back in the band...im curious to see what MM has left to say. Get Zim Zum back and i fer sure listen!

i have mixed feelings about manson after that last album. i proudly own every release up until holywood, and not so proudly everything else, although golden age wasn't TOO bad, (Spade/Paranoir are the highlights for me) although to me that album was the point where manson went from "i'm pretty clever" to "i'm trying way too hard to be clever."

As far as eat me drink me... it sucked that Twiggy left before golden age, but it sucked even more losing John 5, Pogo, and Ginger Fish, so the fact that the album was just Manson and Skold kind of puts the crappiness of it into perspective. Skold proved he can do some pretty decent guitar solos at least. Are You the Rabbit and title track are definitely the strongest successes of the album, and i think if he had made the album a true concept album to accompany his lewis caroll/alice in wonderland movie that never was, i think it would have been a success.

since then though, Chris Vrenna has joined, and Twiggy came back since Skold went on to be in Ohgr (I have a feeling that partnership will work a lot better musically). Also Ginger Fish is back in the band (at least when i saw them live last january he was); and now i've learned Wes Borland a part of the picture. Hopefully Manson will use this refreshing line up to his advantage, put "personal writing" aside in favor of a Concept, and make the greatest album since Antichrist!!! (more realistically though, Holywood, which isn't bad).

The next album will be better because of Twiggy.
Eat Me, Drink Me's whole concept was wrong for Manson who's known to shock people. Kind of he shocked by releasing that type of album.
Hope Wes Borland does well.

IMO...

PORTRAIT: awesome. still one of his best albums. unique sound, set the band apart from the pack right away, it's lyrically interesting and catchy, and not afraid to go places many bands wouldn't. it also features one of my fave manson/reznor collabs too with "my monkey" tongue sticking out smiley

CHILDREN: a great remix album. many of the mixes on here are better than the originals, not without some very talented help i might add, and stacks up well next to reznor's or zombie's own remix releases.

ANTICHRIST: without a doubt his FRAGILE, or THE WALL. it's still amazing. technically, sonically and conceptually, it's one of the great real rock albums of the 90's.

ANIMALS: an interesting one, great new direction, lyricaly intriguing and some very cool songs, not as dark & agressive as AS, but holds its own as a competent homage to bowie's ZIGGY STARDUST, if not as focussed on the whole concept as bowie was with his.

HOLY WOOD: i feel this stands alongside AC as his 2 best albums. he returns to the AC darkness and anger at the world, brings some killer new songs to the fore, without repeating his earlier works, and proves he still has what it takes to create an amazing album.

maybe this was where he loses sight of something. from here on out he just seems to be less interesting overall.

GROTESQUE: by this point it sounded as if manson had run out of new things to say, and he was merely appearing to be a parody of his own band. much like all the now-forgotten emo bands of the last few years. the music was still sonically interesting in most places, but lyrically, it was bordering on the comical.

EAT ME: fucking horrible. truly it was. the only release that i stopped listening to halfway thru first time. upon hearing the whole thing, i was mortified. this was lame. manson seemingly jumping a little too late on the dying emo bandwagon and boring the hell out of me with every fucking song.

that stupid fucking music video with him and evan made the whole experience even more ridiculous. if this is manson in love, someone please kill his so-called actress girlfriend and give him something worth writing about again.

WE TRIED... BUT HE WOULDN'T LEAVE [upcoming 2008 album]: mixed thoughts having not heard anything yet. could be horrid, yet vrenna & twiggy could turn it all around and create something very fucking cool. if only they kick than manson guy outta the band grinning smiley

I haven't heard any of their recent album (reading above makes me think I'm not missing out on too much) but I do like them overall. Their last show here in mn sucked. The band wasn't really into it. The songs were mostly the new ones, Worst of all, the crowd sucked! Everyone was just standing around like 'ooow shock me marilyn.' lame.

Didn't care much for EMDM... until I saw Manson live on that tour. In Cleveland at the House of Blues... the most intense pit I've ever been in... my feet were not touching the ground from the time Manson got onstage to the time my boyf and I had to leave the pit because it was so intense. We were in for 6 or 7 songs... made eye contact with Manson. I was waving middle fingers during Irresponsible Hate Anthem, and midway through the song Manson looks at me and says, "Let me see all your middle fingers." I guess I stood out- I had a blond mohawk at the time. Haha. Amidst a sea of black. It was pretty cool. Jeordie looked great, it was a good time.

I think Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood would have to be my favorite albums. I'd love to see Manson again- the House of Blues was great- very small, personal club venue.

09/20/08 2:19 PM

I saw him at Ozzfest in 1997, in Columbus, Ohio. Ozzy had a cold or something and didn't show up that night and the crowd rioted. (Cops teargassed us, it was a mess.)

But before that, all the guys from the headlining bands came out onstage and played "Crazy Train." Dimebag Darrell hoisted Manson up on his shoulders and ran around the stage. I'll never forget it.

Curi.

i really trying to understand this "antichrist/mechanical/holywood" trilogy.

to me it doesn't seem like there's much of a storyline connection... seems more like he just ripped off ziggy stardust three times in a row.

i love marilyn manson so much

well...'90s manson that is. Seeing his naked ass in that ridiculous blue outfit during the 1998 mtv awards was the first time i remember seeing him perform live. 10 years later during the final show of the 2008 North American tour, i caught a half empty water bottle thrown at me by manson and drank it, then grabbed him during the final song of the night. it was such a fucking awesome show! but i think that his albums have gotten much much worse since holywood back in 2000. it just seems like everything has gone down hill for marilyn ever since twiggy left. but now that twiggy is back, HOPEFULLY things will be different this time. he's looking kinda fat and old these days...wish he would take some notice at what trent reznor did and get his little goth ass back in shape!

09/24/08 10:02 PM

I bet his concerts are pretty wicked. I don't if MM would ever or has ever come to Utah though.

09/24/08 9:40 PM

I love everything by Manson before Golden Age of Grotesque. Once Twiggy left, the music just completely fell apart. And now even though Twiggy is back, Pogo is gone so I don't think Manson will ever return to how great he was, which is pretty sad.

I went to the Golden Age of Grotesque tour when I was in highschool, Mechanical Animals, Antichrist Superstar and Portrait of an American Family got me into his stuff. The concert was good, great atmosphere, but that ended my interest in him immediately after.
It's got FA to do with me but his relationship with ERW offends me to no end. confused smiley

Bla...they should kick Brian the space cowboy out, bring back John 5 and maybe call up Trent and Danny Lohner to see how they are doing...

Whatever happened to Danny Lohner by the way?

He does work most relating to Puscifer and Black Light Burns nowadays.

Wow, I can't believe how hard Manson is being rocked on in a NIN forum!

Anywho, Manson is my all-time favorite artist. The triptych is probably the most touching, beautiful, and encrypted musical series I have ever experienced. Every time I listen to ACSS, MA, or HW something pops out at me that I haven't noticed before, be it music wise, or lyrical content. The triptych just blows my mind...it is such a masterpiece of a story - not to mention all of the little historical/occult references interspersed throughout it. Those albums got me through so many difficult times in my life, and keep me so entertained, that I will always respect them, and therefore I will always respect Marilyn Manson.

GAOG was excellent for me! It was so edgy and raw, yet also catchy. The (s)aint video really topped off that era for me, and the Doppelhertz short film was absolutely...enchanting.

I do believe that there is something from each of Manson's eras that sticks out, and further defines the character of Marilyn Manson. I did enjoy EMDM - I appreciated how it was Manson as himself, diary entries turned into music, if you will. It meant so much to me that Manson gave us an album so close to his personal life.

Honestly, EMDM is not my favorite album by any means. I do believe that it lacked substance compared to his earlier works (even GAOG, which was also shallow compared to earlier works), but I highly doubt that he will ever put out another album (or albums) that can compare with the triptych. I appreciate Manson's newest endeavors for what they are, and I try not to compare them to the triptych, because they are not the triptych, nor will they ever be it.

Well, there's my Manson rant.

I loves him.

09/28/08 6:55 PM

Eat Me, Drink Me was his worst album of all. I can't believe he had enough nerve to say in interviews that the album was his best. What drugs has he been doing?

Manson is an intelligent guy. I mean, he has made millions off of us just by shocking and corrupting. He does actually expose truth to some lies of religion and the world. I think he is more brilliant when he is partnered with Twiggy.
They make a perfect team.

09/29/08 5:36 AM

Talking with a fake low voice and once in a while mentioning stuff from some Jewish cult does not make one an intellectual. I don't think that he is a complete moron but I wouldn't call him smarter than average or something...so far I haven't been impressed with his intellect (yet).

manson just played a private show for the managers of hot topic and their hq staff in los angeles. i was there, he was disgusting, it was as entertaining as a john waters movie.

and i fucking love john waters.

he's clearly past his prime and was so wasted it was almost embarassing, but i was happy to have experienced such an intimate show.

and, um ... am i seeing things or did someone describe that filler video "doppelhurtz" as "enchanting"?

*shrug*

diff'rent strokes, i suppose.

10/09/08 3:24 PM

what's wrong with emdm isn't that it didn't shock people but because most people got into manson because his lyrics reached out to the neglected ones. aww </333 xD anyways, and we could relate to him and he saw from a critical perspective of our society, the celebrity and all that bullshit, introspective thought of a human and his relationship with the world he lives in. HOWEVER. the sweet sweet thing is, he goes on to make a "love" album, which emdm essentially is. Quite frankly, love albums are selfish and its just like the next pop album down the row- pop music is basically all selfish songs about love and superficial feelings. it wasn't deep, it wasn't thoughtful, it was "memememe", you stole my music and ideas, i love this hot young loli, blahblhalbah, ooh did i tell you i was reading vampire books? its shallow and and nowhere as beautiful and figurative as an album like ACSS.

and i totally believe that he's an embarrassment now- he needs to really redeem himself and pull his head out of his ass, i don't think just having twiggy would cut it.

10/09/08 6:21 PM

I lost the will to listen to Eat Me, Drink Me half way through the song Just A Car Crash Away.

I can safely say that song is one of the worst I've ever heard.

Like one can expect, I enjoy Antichrist Superstar a lot and Mechanical Animals a little.

Haha, he's getting older like everyone else. And his drugs also left a mark. I always wanted to see him live, I love that new lineup but his voice is just too fucked up.

did you hear the decent quality recordings? because I was thinking the same thing until I saw them, and he actually sounded pretty good.

and eat me drink me was a great album I dont understand all the hate.

YouTube isn't kind to Manson's voice. You occasionally come across some poor quality Mechanical Animals-era bootlegs and his voice sounds just as scratchy and fucked up as it seems on the poor quality EMDM/GOAG bootlegs.

I saw him live at the Brixton Academy gig earlier this year. I know for a fact he was pretty on form that night. Then I got home and watched some mobile phone footage of said gig on YouTube...

I have to admit he has let him self go a bit , and some times it really pisses me off. There are times were his voice just sounds horrid and he doesn't seem to give a fuck.

I still haven't listened to any of Eat Me, Drink Me...the way he talked about it leading up to it's release turned me off to it. Saying one of the songs was gonna be the new Bela Legosi's Dead...

I'll get around to listening to it one of these days, with Twiggy back hopefully the next album will get back to normal

Eat Me, Drink Me pretty much sucked. I was quite disappointed, as I pretty much like all the rest of his albums. And I love the Spooky Kids demos.

i posted a ton about it on the manson thread over at ets. i'm cornfed chump over there.

Manson is sounding worse and worse these days.I saw him at the beginning of the year in NY and he sounded meh at best.

I heard Joerdie puked onstage during the Hot Topic thing. He needs to rejoin APC imo.

also- Ginger Fish died yesterday
