he's definitely more of a businessman - i think that's what the whole look and shock-tactics style of manson was all about. many bands did it before him - and they all made shitloads of money, and they were all massive pop-culture icons. some still are.
i think nin is much better music, and reznor is a much more versatile and creative musician, but he focuses more on the music, and less on his image or tactics to stay in the spotlight. manson had this down for over a decade, so while only nin fans really knew about nails - everyone with a tv knew who manson was.
not so much these days, as EMDM kinda arrived and vanished again almost as fast, probably due to the lack of so-called shocking lyrics & imagery, but right up until GAOG, there was a huge fanfare with each release, and the everpresent media wankers there to rip into him and push his image out there even more, which would inevitably bring more sales of his albums or dvd's or shoddy unauthorised books etc.
i think when all is said and done, nin will keep pushing through the dying industry in the coming years, and will keep evolving largely unnoticed by the 'pop-centric' world, while manson has a bit of a challenge now to get back into the limelight he was always in a decade ago.
if this next album bombs out too, which i hope it doesn't, as twiggy and vrenna should create something cool, but if it does, maybe he should continue to focus on his art rather than tap a dry well. either that, or he's finally got a second wind, and can come back in a massive way.
i hope he does come back with a kickass new album, as i'd hate to see EMDM and this one be the end of his music career when the pop industry is still managing to infect the world with the worst music ever conceived, teaching the kids that music is shit & cheap & worthless.
