Great Swan Songs--Final Albums

The Beatles--Abby Road/Let It Be: Not sure which to include as AR was recorded last, but LIB was the final release. Either album would have been a fitting last album.

The Velvet Underground-Loaded

Van Halen-1984 (with DLR)

Van Halen-Balance (with Sammy)

The Doors-LA Woman (with Morrison, most people don't count the post JM material)

Nirvana-In Utero

Soundgarden- Down on the Upside (underrated)

Stone Temple Pilots-SLDD (pre-reunion)

Hole-Celebrity Skin (pre-reunion, last album with Eric Erlandson)

Technically the VU's final album was Squeeze, but it was effectively a Doug Yule solo album as Cale and Reed had left by that time, and Maureen Tucker didn't play on it. It was also fucking awful into the bargain.

And I'd say In Utero was by far Nirvana's best record.

I thought I'd be the only one here to have heard of Squeeze, so I just listed Loaded as that's the one that's pretty much seen as the last VU album. I actually listened to Squeeze this morning and I actually kind of like it. It's sort of like an inferior version of Loaded, but kind of has it's own charm.

Did someone put And Justice For All on their list? C'mon, even if you don't like the Load albums, the Black Album is one of their best.

07/07/12 10:46 AM

^That post was obviously a reference to the large percentage of metalheads that think Justice was the last "good" Metallica album. It was the last one with their old thrash sound (though they brought it back on Death Magnetic). Black Album was when they started to go a more mainstream direction, though they still had their hair, their logo, and most of the songs still had that Metallica edge. Black showed the last of the integrity they lost afterwards, but it still had a more mainstream sound than Justice and before, therefore they had pretty much reached the point where the "selling out" accusations started getting serious.

TL;DR version: There was a line between their thrash sound and the commercial rock sound. Justice was the last one on the thrash side of the line, Black was ON the line, and Load was on the commercial rock side of the line.
