They were one of my favorite bands...well they still are! One of the first bands I really ever got into and they've made some of the catchiest songs I've ever heard.
Catchy doesn't necessarily mean "good" otherwise I'd be stating Good Charlotte, Nickelback and The Jonas Brothers.

But Kurt's death catapulted their status into a mass phenomenon and it's all become a farce, Hey last year loads of magazines were celebrating his would of been 40th birthday, which I doubt they would of done if he was still alive. Honestly do you really think Nirvana would still be getting the Martyrdom parade if he wasn't dead? I personally don't think so.

Nirvana were quite famous before Kurt's death. Sure, the suicide made things bigger and perhaps extended the lifespan of the music, but they were very big long before Kurt killed himself. Whether they still would be popular or not doesn't really matter with regards to your original statement, which is simply false.

Also, there's just as much chance that if Kurt hadn't killed himself he would still be making music in some capacity, and that would easily prolong the influence of (what would be) his earlier music as well. THAT is a matter of opinion - but it's a fact that they were very popular before Kurt's death.
