PJ Harvey is an amazing musician. Her guitar playing, her emotional wailing, her raw lyrics. Has anyone seen her on tour for White Chalk? I was disappointed that she only went to NYC and LA. PJ's live show is something you must see if you're a fan.

I loves me some Polly Jean! cool smiley I've only seen her live once and that was when she opened for U2 on their Elevation tour.

08/25/08 12:34 AM

I have been on a PJ kick for a about a week now! I've been listening to White Chalk and The Peel Sessions a lot, and her duet with Nick cave "Henry Lee" is basically been on permanent rotation for a week now.

I wish I had the cash to see her in concert!

08/25/08 12:04 PM

I've seen her twice at smallish clubs.

I'm still listening to "White Chalk" pretty regularly, that album still completely blows me away.

I'm still really sad and disappointed that more of us didn't get to see "White Chalk" live. It's really a shame, certainly not Polly Jean's fault.

It took me awhile to get into "White Chalk," but now I can't listen to it enough. It's so stark and bare bones. I read in an interview that PJ said it was easier to sing in the higher register on "White Chalk" instead of her "PJ Harvey voice."

08/25/08 11:13 PM

Here is an interesting discussion we had about "White Chalk" over at ETS when it leaked, including links to some reviews at the time.

she was fucking amazing with Queens Of The Stone Age on the 16th of August.

08/26/08 7:45 PM

I would have loved to see PJ and Josh perform Desert Session material together.

Well, hell. I would've killed to be at that show.tongue sticking out smiley

08/27/08 2:34 PM

I saw some interview with her when I was 12 years old, and she called herself "rock bitch from hell" or something like that. For some reason, I thought that was extremely cool at the time and decided to go by that nick myself... hahaha. sad smiley

Anyway, she's definitely a great musician! I love her style. Haven't listened to White Chalk that much, can any of you recommend a few songs off of that album? smiling smiley

08/27/08 3:36 PM

It's a concept album that's relatively short (I think it's only around 32 minutes long), so I recommend listening to the whole thing.

But if you want a sense of the overall vibe of the album:

* When Under Ether

* Broken Harp

* Dear Darkness

PJ Harvey does not get enough recognition from american radio. i think her only "hit" single was 50ft queenie... and that is no wheres NEAR her best song. i only recently got into her music this year and i was upset that i have been missing out all these years.

whats funny about 50ft queenie... i don't even know if it was a hit single, i only knew it from Beavis and Butthead~

To be fair, PJ's videos were in fairly regular rotation on MTV's "Alternative Nation" and "120 Minutes" back in the 90s.

"Dry" was released in 1992, "Rid of Me" was released in 1993, "To Bring You My Love" was released in 1995. The only place you heard music like PJ Harvey's was on MTV's "120 Minutes" and "Alternative Nation." Or in clubs or by word-of-mouth. Just like every other "alternative" act out there.

HERE is a playlist archive from "120 Minutes."

Note that they were playing "Sheela Na Gig," "Dress," "Man Size," etc.

my mum went to school with P J Harvey in Beaminster! She's two years younger than my mum.

Her dad and my grandad are still friends!

I f-ing love PJ!!! She seriously kicks ass.

From Man-Size to When Under Ether, the woman never ceases to grab me in some way.

PJ is BRILLIANT. I saw her on the Uh Huh Her tour and she did not disappoint. Plus, she was sooo nice to her fans. Out of my favorite female artists (Bjork, Tori Amos, Shirley Manson, Karen O, and of course PJ) I feel she's the one with the most depth. Love her!

09/05/08 6:48 PM

I pretty much love her more than anyone. She's amazing live *sigh*

09/10/08 12:20 AM

a'm admittedly out ae touch wi her latest
stuff, but 'dry' and 'rid of me' blew me away
when they came out, an a'd think they always
will

10/22/08 3:55 AM

hell, I want to see her live

11/11/08 10:59 AM

PJ fucking rocks. I remember "Down By the Water" as the single that hit in DC radio. I ran out and bought that album and have been hooked ever since. She definitely doesn't get enough recognition in the US which is sad b/c we need more music like hers out in the mainstream. I still get offended when people don't know who she is.

11/12/08 11:02 PM

Polly Jean rules my world... sigh. I did catch her in LA performing in support of 'White Chalk' and again in LA when she toured for 'Stories...' that show was one of the best shows of my life. Her live show is life altering. She is a deity I swear.

I haven't seen her live yet, but have all her albums and have just discovered White Chalk... I haven't been able to stop playing it for the past week. She is definitely one of my most Favorite artists... Dare I say #1 or close to #1 favorite.

Ever since Down By The Water and This is Love I haven't been able to ignore her, not that I would want to, but when I'm thinking of looking for new music or something familiar to fit my emotion at the time, she is someone I am always looking to.

PJ's voice is awesome and I like her a lot but she is not that an amazing musician like her annoying!!! hardcore fan love to say. Her songs are for the greater part very simply constructed - the interesting voice, raw lyrics and yeah, the attractive appearance save the overall impression.

"To bring you my love" is my favourite album so far. Long snake MOAN!

Something to look forward to in 2009. I really like Dance Hall at Louse Point. Songs like Taut and Civil War Correspondent are my favorites.

PJ Harvey is amazing. Loved Rid of Me.
