Does anyone else here like them?

Gish, Siamese Dream and MCIS will always be near the top of my list of favourite albums. I like most of the Pumpkins stuff up to the point of their split. I do not, however, support the Billy Corgan / Zwan 2.0 project... I mean, the new Smashing Pumpkins.

Yeah, they put out some great material. Adore and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness are amazing.

On a side note, The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning is a really good song. Probably my favorite one.

I used to have it burned on a CD years ago, but lost it, and then completely forgot about how cool it was in between that point and when I saw the "Watchmen" trailer.

The End Is The Beginning Is The End, that was used for the Batman & Robin film, is also a great. I prefer The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning since it sounds more omnimous and haunting - not to mention more electronic driven in the style of Adore.

I'll probably get alot of flack for this but MACHINA is, hands down, my favorite album and, imo, the best thing Corgan has every done. I hated the new album but it's hard to count that as a Smashing Pumpkins album.

I LOVE the smashing pumpkins... Def. in my top 5 all time favorite bands...

they were in town the other night (at a casino) I REALLY wanted to go but I had to work...
From what I heard THEY WERE TERRIBLE... song choices were bad (which I thought they were in last year when I saw them)

I think they are a great band and always will be, but should STOP trying to recreate their fame in the 90's... its gone... I'd like to hear something new come from them... their last album (imo) was to them what St. Anger was to Metallica (yeah I said it)

Love everything from SP.

08/16/08 11:29 PM

They were probably my favourite group going, until last February when I caught them live. That was hands down the worst show I've ever been to. I've not even been able to listen to one of their records since, it was that awful.

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing how they go about doing the self-releasing thing.

08/17/08 12:21 AM

I loved the pumpkins growing up. i really miss d'arcy and james. i saw the show last fall, and while billy and jimmy were amazing, the new chick made me sick, and i dont even remember the other guy...

everything pre breakup though, i love.

08/17/08 12:38 AM

I love Pumpkins music from Gish-Siamese Dream-Pisces Iscariot. I don't like Mellon Collie as a whole surprisingly, but it and Adore have their moments. Zeitgeist gets a bad rap imo but I will agree it doesn't have the same Pumpkins magic the early stuff had.

Dammit, that's bad. How were they that bad? I mean they had to be truly awful for it to have that effect on you.

I'm listening to them right now in preparation for the Pumpkins show tonight in Raleigh! Psyched as shit. I hear they're actually playing The Beginning is the End is the Beginning these days thanks to Watchmen. I had that song on the Batman and Robin soundtrack when I was like eight. Bitchin'.

New Smashing Pumpkins are ridiculously terrible and embarrassing. I hate them.

As for the old Smashing Pumpkins, hands down, one of my two favorite bands ever. They've had the biggest impact on me musically, growing up.

Billy is a twisted genus. I love him for what he's created in the past, but cannot stand how he's destroying the image that he had for himself and his music. He's become a joke, and it upsets me that it's ended up like this.

Just got back from my first Smashing Pumpkins concert in Raleigh. Certainly not as good as I was expecting, but not bad either. Billy Corgan went off on a small, funny tangent about the Olympics that went something like this:

"We're happy to be out here in Raleigh, even though we're missing the badminton final. And also Michael Phelps winning his 9,000,000th gold medal. By the way, FUCK Bob Costas. Fuck him. I don't need his vision of the olympics, I just wanna watch the fucking Olympics."

Made me laugh. But no, not as good as I would imagine the "old" Pumpkins would have been, with Wretzky and Iha. The new bassist is very clearly supposed to be just a fake D'arcy. From a distance she looked like her even. Can't sing as good as her though.

No Zero. No 1979. BWBW was twice as fast as it is on the record. TBITEITB was played - thanks, Watchmen trailer. It was fucking awesome. We Only Come Out At Night was an encore and so was that old timey "In The Summertime" song....bizarre. Lots of weird noise in between songs, which would be cool...on a record. In concert, people get impatient. One douche kept yelling "Play a song!"

Corgan actually seems like maybe he's not quite as much of an asshole anymore? He always struck me as a pretentious prick but he seemed very friendly and down to earth on stage tonight.

Jimmy Motherfucking Chamberlain...for some reason I guess I never knew what a phenomenal drummer he is. Fuck me. Corgan plays guitar better than I thought too.

I'm seeing them tomorrow night in Clearwater. Setlist kind of disappoints after I paid scalper prices on eBay, but I've never seen The Pumpkins and a small venue show seemed too good to be true. Zero and 1979 are probably my favorites, but at least I still get to hear Bullet, Beginning, ans Siva.

He was really nice at our show too. It was during the lead to the world series and he talked about the cubs and our team...

But yeah, i know what youre saying about the bassist clearly trying to replace d'arcy and not pulling it off at all.

what i wouldnt give to go back to the early ninetees. so sad sad smiley

Honestly I'm surprised he didn't hire another asian guy to play guitar. Dude has nothing on Iha.

08/25/08 6:30 AM

I used to adore this band in the 90's. When they reformed, I should have been over the moon. Unfortunatly, I listend to Zeitgeist...
They toured a while ago, my first chance to see them. And I chose not to. It would have ruined what I imagined them to be like for myself. (From what I heard about the show, I made the right choice. 10 minute guitar solo's? Jesus christ)
That and the fact that since Iha isn't there, no chance of Mayonaise being played.
Still, Jimmy is one of the most distinctive drummers around.
Maybe things will get better?

08/25/08 7:58 AM

In my opinion, they are dull, bland, boring, safe. I don't like them at all, no.

Obviously you haven't heard that much of The Smashing Pumpkins.

09/03/08 8:33 PM

Smashing Pumpkins are one of the greatest bands still going, Machina was underrated, and Zeitgeist was a good strong come back. Pumpkins have to grow on you, you cant just listen to them once and say they suck because aaahhh.
The next shit they put out will be BADASS.

09/03/08 11:54 PM

I like them, but I thought Zeitgeist was no where near as good as their older stuff. I like a few of the songs off of it though.

09/04/08 12:16 AM

I listen to The Smashing Pumpkins from time to time, when I get into the right mood.
Usually “Mellon Collie…” and “Machina” (“I of the Mourning” is one of their best songs, IMO).
Also I consider their videos quite interesting. ("Ava Adore" is really mesmerizing).

09/04/08 3:42 PM

Definitely one of my favorite bands, the Smashing Pumpkins. Just based off their singles, they are awesome. I heard Machina at a friend's, and was in love. Although for some reason I never got any album, usually putting them off whilst buying something else. I do have Rotten Apples (greatest hits collection), and I love it. I also have Zeitgeist, and while it's not up to par with their earlier work, it's not that bad. Zero, Disarm, Eye, BWBW, to name a few, are Perfect (which itself is not so perfect, but still enjoyable).

And greendog, you are horribly mistaken, I must say.

09/04/08 2:55 PM

Used to love them back in the day, but i'm just not digging the new line up. I saw them in manchester in Feb musically it was ok,but they had some self indulgant feed back thing for 25 mins at the end which was boring as hell.

Bring back Darcy and James I say

09/04/08 3:42 PM

They are kind of losing it live, Billy just kinda stands up on the stage and does nothing. Plus he's too busy complaining that people don't buy records anymore, when it's actually PEOPLE DON'T BUY YOUR RECORDS BILLY.

And Ginger is D'arcy's twin...but she sucks at bass and singing.

I don't know, they're losing me. It's sad.

I just want a good new album.

Oh, and GLOW is a good song.

09/04/08 6:36 PM

I enjoy Mellon Collie immensely.
But I'm trying to branch out. What other album(s) would be good to get into?

09/04/08 7:01 PM

Awesome band from right around my area. One of my music teachers at my College taught James Iha and still keeps in contact with him. Rumor is he inspired an album cover but idk if that holds any truth.

09/05/08 2:57 AM

The most underated album I think would have to be Machina, if that came out after MCIS there popularity would of lasted alot longer, but I still like Adore (great album)
