The re-master of Gish sounds far sharper.

According to Wiki, the new album will be out in the summer.

Billy Corgan Rants At SXSW: 'I Was Part Of A Generation That Changed The World'

In typical fashion, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan caused quite a stir at SXSW Monday night when he ranted about the staggering number of "poseurs" in the music industry in a one-on-one interview with author Brian Solis, as reported by Billboard.

Corgan made his opinions on the current state of the record industry clear: The desire for fame is leaving artistry in its wake. To gain mainstream attention for his talent nowadays, Corgan stated that he would have to set himself on fire on YouTube.

Comparing young artists to strippers, Corgan claimed that today's musicians "have grown up thinking that being famous is the goal, not to be respected -- not to be dangerous." Meanwhile Corgan is still in the process of parceling out his self-produced opus "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope," a 44-track record released in installments.

The outspoken frontman even commented on sultry newcomer Lana Del Rey's heavily-maligned "Saturday Night Live" performance, noting that while he wasn't surprised that she "crashed and burned" he also thinks that "she wasn't ready for it."

"Don't call it rock and roll," Corgan told the SXSW crowd toward the end of the night. "I was part of a generation that changed the world -- and it was taken over by poseurs."

I mean the long track listing is like how the Clash did back in the day. But on a diffrent, market tack. I have some remasters, than sound great. And going to get some the new one with the rare concert dvds. Most of the b-sides was lucky to find of a a web site to down load w, studio radio. and the peel sessions as well.

03/19/12 9:36 AM

I'm assuming you found that stuff via "ThePumpkins.net". Great source. You can also get officially released b-sides thru a few different means. These b-side collections:

-Pisces Iscariot (reissue of it coming this year)
-The Aeroplane Flies High Box Set*
-Judas 0*

The starred items can be found digitally, as well. iTunes (and Amazon.com I think) has them available in a collection called, "Rarities & B-Sides". Worth the d/l if you don't mind lacking the physical products. Although, TAFH box is every bit worth buying the actual item. Judas 0 is a bit harder to come by if you want a physical release. Largely because it was a limited pressing secondary disc released with the special edition of "Rotten Apples: The Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits" in 2001.

Oceania has been confirmed by Billy on Twitter for an early June release. Supposedly, they will be doing an 'online experience' for the initial release of the record. You can find more info here:

Crestfallen Blog

Oh, and don't listen to anything Billy says about the state of rock. The man doesn't know what he is talking about. Just because Zeitgeist & Teargarden weren't up to par, that means nothing except the quality of his music. Don't blame people for "not listening" or "not understanding" when you dropped the ball.

Rock is alive, not through radio means or MTV, but through dedicated music fans. There are tons of great bands, new & old, keeping the spirit alive. If only some would look below the surface. If Oceania is indeed as good as he says, then cut the crap & just release it. The quality of the record would speak for itself, and word will spread. He is setting himself up for disappointment...

I thought that Zeitgeist was one of their best albums.

03/19/12 10:58 AM

All a matter of opinion, haha.

Just the general consensus was that it was a bad record. I agree with it. Now, that doesn't mean you are forbidden from liking it. smiling smiley

Rolling Stone gave it a solid 4/5 review and put it in their top 40 of 2007.

Funny how they said that, and then changed it because it wasn't a popular record reception-wise. They let others cloud their judgement. Look at the score now.

Rolling Stone: The Smashing Pumpkins

If they thought it was a 4/5, they should have let it be. That was a perfectly good opinion. Then the backlash started, and they dropped it from 4 stars to only 2. They did the same thing with Machina & Adore. Back in the day, they were rated higher, and now they've dropped the ratings. Why? So ridiculous. Just review the damn album, and keep it where you had it...

Rolling Stone is bullshit, hence why I don't follow them. To change their opinion on music because they're worried about their image. Pathetic.

I do like Stellar, Zeitgeist, 7 Shades Of Black, Tarantula and That's The Way (My Love Is). And then United States absolutely SLAYED live the two times I saw it. However, it stops there for me. I just find the remainder to be very mundane, unfortunately. It lacks the passion, in my eyes.

On the other hand, had they given the album a rawer (and darker) production like Billy originally intended, and they mixed his loud-ass vox down, then it would sit much better in the eyes of fans. It is my belief that Zeitgeist was a great record in theory, and intention, but BC & JC took the wrong paths with it. Had so much potential. sad smiley

Still, I'd MUCH rather slap Zeitgeist on over essentially anything on rock radio. Though I find it to be Corgan's weakest offering, it is still MILES beyond any of the popular trash people call "music."

03/19/12 9:17 PM

It may be that a different reviewer rated the album on the website. Whatever, I like it.

03/19/12 10:05 PM

That's all that matters. Everybody is different. Ya like what ya like.

I will say, I wish Billy belted the screams on the studio US like he did here:

United States Live 12/02/2008

03/23/12 10:58 AM

Daydream

Love this one.

03/26/12 10:24 AM

Yeah, its a great song. Have you been listening to the re-issue webisodes popping up on Youtube? Billy's been doing select tracks from Gish & Siamese Dream (plus their b-sides). He starts each one by going over the background of the respective song before delving into an acoustic performance of it. The first one he did was Daydream:

Daydream Acoustic

Rhinoceros Acoustic

Starla Acoustic

Disarm Acoustic

Rocket Acoustic

His voice is actually excellent on all of these performances, save for Rocket. Sounds a bit strained there. Nice little videos. I hope this ridiculous "experience" he is speaking of with the Oceania release is sort of like these little clips. Now that, I would not mind. smiling smiley

Happy belated birthday Billy.

Sort of re-discovering Machina. Maybe not their best album but it's still pretty good with several gems:

The Everlasting Gaze
Raindrops + Sunshowers

Heavy Metal Machine

05/12/12 6:21 AM

I agree. Love The Everlasting Gaze. My favorites from that record:

Stand Inside Your Love

I of the Mourning

Age of Innocence

Have you ever listened to Machina II? You can download it for free online. Pretty awesome in its own right. Much less produced and rawer:

Dross

Let Me Give The World To You

Cash Car Star

In My Body

Machina I & II will make a whole lot more sense when he remasters/remixes/reorders them and reissues them as the double album he originally intended back in 2000. Come 2013.

These are some b sides/outtakes from the Machina sessions that rank in my top 20 Pumpkins songs. Maybe you'll enjoy them, too.

Soot and Stars (quite possibly the saddest thing he's written, with the most honest and personal lyrics he's ever penned)

Blissed & Gone (another sad one)

Here I Am (acoustic demo)

05/13/12 5:10 AM

I have Machina II, good stuff, although I am more familiar with the first volume. I am looking forward to hearing the remaster in its' entirety and am glad that Billy's vision will be realized.

Of the three outtakes that you listed, I am familiar with the first two, but not the third. Where is "Here I Am" from?

For acoustic stuff, I really liked "American Gothic," especially "Sunkissed."

The Machina Acoustic Demos. Some good stuff on it:

Machina Acoustic Demos

Also, the Friends & Enemies Of Modern Music compilation. Worth checking out for the early version of Blue Skies Bring Tears (which far outstrips the officially released two in my eyes), Disco King (demo of Everlasting Gaze) and the awesome live soundboard of XYU from Halloween '98:

I just went to that website. Holy shit, that's a lot of demos/bootlegs? Is it Kosher to download?

05/14/12 9:53 PM

Yes. Completely safe. That is all stuff that BC is aware of. Unofficial releases, save for Machina II. Some stuff like the Machina Acoustic Demos & TFAEOMM were originally tapes given to fans by Billy at shows back in the day. He always encouraged open taping/recording for actual shows, and was never shy as far as demos & what not.

The sources themselves are safe, if that is what you mean.

Some of my favorites:

Gravity Demos(early Mellon Collie demos, most which never made it past this stage)

Double Door 1995 (Pumpkins testing out material for Mellon Collie in front of a small crowd before heading into the studio to record)

Adore Demos II (some nice acoustic outtakes from Adore)

Adore Live (a live 'best of' complilation in order of the Adore tracklisting)

Happy listening. smiling smiley

If you are ever curious about anything related to the Pumpkins' catalogue, go no further than that site, and this as well:

On a side note, the Pumpkins will be embarking on a US tour in the fall of this year.

Not everything, but a good chunk. Some of the live shows are too similar. I only downloaded the ones I listed and a good handful of others. I also have The Reel Time Sessions, Mashed Potatoes Compilation, Grand Rex 2007 show, Quiet & Other Songs, some of the miscellaneous MCIS demo comps, etc from the site.

The Pumpkins truly have a massive back catalogue. And that is to say, just the Pumpkins. If you have never checked out Zwan or Billy solo, do so. There is an immense amount of great quality live Zwan material (some stuff on ThePumpkins.net, such as "Spilled Milk", "The Glass House", etc). Mary Star Of The Sea was their only studio album, and it was decent. However, the unreleased live & studio recordings you can come across hold much stronger material.

If you search enough, you will also stumble upon some acoustic solo Billy material dubbed, "The Chicago Songs". Truly a massive collection of songs to go through. Jimmy's solo album & new band are worth checking out, as well. "Life Begins Again" by The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, and "Great Civilizations" by Skysaw. Iha's new record is quite decent, as well.

Not trying to overwhelm you or anything. tongue sticking out smiley

Haha...

They'll be headlining a benefit show at The Metro in Chicago (their hometown venue for those who don't know) on June 14th, five days before Oceania comes out. If any are interested.
