Didn't billy corgan hookup with one of trents ex gf's while they were still dating? Pumpkins are good but get old fast...

Bought Rotten Apples today! My first Smashing Pumpkins CD. I love Zero and Ava Adore so far.

i've liked pumpkins right up the machina & machina II, and didn't really get into those albums as much. gish & siamese are great first albums, but i still think mellon collie is fucking epic, and adore seemed like a low key addendum to mellon collie in a way.

there were over 50 songs recorded for mellon collie, did they surface on any other releases? i fell this was their most creative era, so would love to hear everything they recorded in that time.

i thought corgan's solo album was interesting but didn't grab me all that much, same with thom yorke's. not bad, but not brilliant either. zwan... i heard a couple of songs, and didn't go any further.

i still haven't listened to zeitgeist much, only a few songs... i bought it, so i should give it a complete spin.

considering billy recorded nearly all the walls of guitars on gish & siamese dream himself, as well as a lot bass work and writing the lyrics, he should stop reforming different versions of pumpkins, and become the smashing pumpkins himself, as a solo artist, but recording all the instruments himself... maybe with a drummer... those drum loops he uses get boring real fast... those songs would be better without them...

that said, [IMO] their best album mellon collie was the most collaborative effort, without billy taking control over every little thing, so becoming a one man band again could also be fatal.

time will tell i guess...

the pumpkins are my second favorite band (used to be tied with nin before the breakup). even though i like all the albums as wholes, i personally dig adore and machina the most. methinks it's the underrated albums that have a warm place in my heart. as for zeitgeist, as a whole, i don't really like it. but i will say that there were a few songs on it that i was like "yeah, those are pretty keen." strangely the best songs were the ones that ended up being store-exclusive tracks or added as bonus tracks on the black & silver version of zeitgeist.

good call. some of the best pumpkins stuff has sadly worn the label of "b-side". although i'm just happy those gems were released instead of just shelved away.

yep TAFH boxset was a great idea!
though my box's handle has already turned yellow sad smiley

Judas O' and Pisces Iscariot had some killer tunes as well.

yellow handle? wow sad smiley. last time i had the box in my possession i walked around school with it and it somehow brought me massive amounts of good luck grinning smiley yeah, i dig TAFH especially taking the 2 track 'bullet' single and making it 7 tracks long.

yeah pisces definitely got some of my favorites on there (starla, spaced, hello kitty kat). the only thing i really didn't like about judas o was the fact that they edited down 'aeroplane'. the ending of that song always gets me hehe.

bummer. well as long as the discs work, then all is well (i think heh). if they didn't...ouchies sad smiley

nopes. i would prolly own it if it were released as a physical product. it's seem odd to invest a bit of money into something not tangible and re-own tracks i already have on cd. also, it's not complete as it lacks 4 tracks from 'pisces' and so on. :\

Have you seen this new subscription stuff ?

It's a really interesting idea but 40 bucks is a bit expensive even if you get the "real" demos and follow the creation of the new songs.

yeah, i got an email about that. the idea is kinda keen, but i'm hesitant about it. the way they word it makes it sound enticing with the minimum 5 updates a week, minimum 5 minutes in length for each update (either audio or video), and etc. but for $40? if this were '96, i would be up for that no question. but when the band is just billy now...i really dunno if i could go for it. in the end, the demos will leak out some way or another like they have in the past.

Yeah, I'll go for the leaks :p

Since they cameback, it's too much about money. How many editions of Zeitgeist did they release ?
Sure, for live shows they are amazing but besides stage they try to sell you anything.

I am with you on this one. IT'S THE MONEY! Smashing Pumpkins are now on the "sellout" list.

And if you are talking about the live shows from the zeitgeist tour, I thought they were extremely weak.

04/22/09 3:52 PM

yeah, this 40 bucks stuff, in addition to being terribly exclusive and guilting people who feel they're "true fans" its a flat out rip off. Nothing he does is gonna take away the genius that was Siamese Dream, but I think from Zeitgeist on out, its all about the cash for Corgan.

04/22/09 5:24 PM

and I just saw this. What the hell would possess him to do this???

Well, I saw the first show in Paris when they played for almost 3 hours and it was awesome. I saw them again in Paris for a shorter show but still really good.
In fact, I'ven't seen many videos from the tour but what I've seen was really impressive.

Damn, I wouldn't post that on youtube even if I was 12 and not famous. This spot is ridiculous. I guess something's going wrong in his head eye rolling smiley

I just got this email from SP.com, I was wondering if anyone else thinks that Billy might be talking about TR here:

"Recently I read a post by another famed alt-rocker from my generation lamenting the negative cultures of the internet...how its inherent narcissism ruins a lot of good fun for everyone because those that shout the loudest and are the most obsessive are able to control a dialogue over things that in the normal discourse of real life wouldn't be that big a deal..."

06/26/09 1:40 AM

^Theres a thread about it, but I think its better archived here.

The letter is bit murky, but I get the sense he sympathizes with Reznor. So, while his release and tour for Zeitgeist was a big Fuck You to fans, I think Corgan realizes the mistakes and hes working to do things right with the next phase of The Smashing Pumpkins. That charity is a nice first step.

Well, this sort of happened in recent moths.

What I don't get is why people still go on talking about D'arcy and James. They left. It's done. They weren't really as great as people say. Yes, they were good musicians, but they weren't as good as Billy and Jimmy.

I actually like all of their stuff and that's because I never go: Oh, shit, this isn't how the Smashing Pumpkins should sound., instead I go: Oh, so this is how the Smashing Pumpkins sound now?.... D'you know what I mean?

I'm not arrogant enough to tell musicians how to play music. What I do is, I take music as it is and like it for what it is, not for what it should be, that's why I still fucking prefer Machina I & II to any given album that's on the top 10 of Billboard.

Pretty much, I like all Smashing Pumpkins albums, because at least Billy does what he wants. I don't feel that he's all about the money and I don't really feel like he's ripping me off. I think he's a great musician, I like their albums and even if it stays like it is right now: Billy Corgan = Smashing Pumpkins... When was it different, really?

I totally get what he's about and support him and all ways I can. I don't feel personally disappointed by Billy Corgan. I'm not that type of guy.

As a recorded band, the Smashing Pumpkins are an all time favorite of mine. They are one of the few bands out there who put out albums I listen to in their entirety and enjoy. Unlike other people here, I thought Zeitgeist was a great comeback. Yeah, I wish Billy dumped the second half of it, but at least the first half certainly brought back the Pumpkins' signature sound and more.

However, I can agree with all of you that Billy has shitty stage presence. When I saw him perform during his tour supporting his solo project, I was highly dissappointed. Sure, he surprised everyone by bringing Jimmy Chamberlin onstage, but he didn't play a single goddamn Pumpkins song the entire show! The pretentious asshole didn't even change facial expressions at all during the performance.

Anyway Here's My Breakdown of the Pumpkins Career:
Gish 10/10
Siamese Dream 11/10
Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness 10/10
Adore 9/10
Machina I/II 9.5/10
Zeitgeist 7/10 (First Half: 10/10, second half: 4/10)

I used to love them but I agree if you listen to them A LOT at first they can get old really fast. Zeitgeist was a disappointment though. None of those songs really grabbed me.

Zwan imo sucks...really bad... and from what I heard of billys solo stuff...yeah not so great.

07/07/09 7:09 PM

I don't see why everyone says that Mellon Collie is such a great album; half of it is good and the other half all sounds the same to me. Either the songs are happy or sad, and there doesn't really seem to be any middleground regarding the styles of songs, as all of them just seem to give Billy an excuse to blow out lyrics that are easily forgotten. I think that Mellon Collie (and, more recently, Zeitgeist) was Billy saying "look at how great I am!" since Siamese Dream did so well.
