I was listening to the mono mix of Revolver the other day and can't express in words how awesome "Eleanor Rigby" sounds. Blows the stereo version away.

Their music has held up pretty well. Wonder what music from the 00s/10s people will still be listening to in 50 years.

I really am thinking hard to answer this. I don't even think Nirvana will hold up. NIN has a chance, but I still just don't know.

i think frank zappa will hold up (with help from my generation hopefully)

I wonder about that often.

I Imagine in 40 years, people will still be listening to:

Coldplay. Whether or not you like them is irrelevant, they are one of the biggest bands in the world and they're not retiring any time soon. If they continue to release good material over the next decade, they could be a very lasting influence.

Muse. They're always on the cutting edge of sounding as badass as possible, so I doubt their music will ever sound dated. Matthew Bellamy is also a force of nature, and depending on how crazy and flamboyant he becomes later in his career, he's probably going to be the new Freddy Mercury.

U2. Bono's humanitarian work and politically themed songs will probably make him pretty memorable. You know all those hipster kids who still listen to Bob Dylan's Masters of War and write songs about how the government sucks? Their kids will be listening to Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Danger Mouse. He's a wicked producer and I think he's still going to be even as he gets older. As for what will be remembered that features him prominently, if Jay-Z is still played when his music is an "oldie", then The Grey Album is still going to be legendary. Gnarls Barkley might have a shot at being memorable too, if they'd make an attempt to release some more damn material.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. Feel free to invalidate it.

You know, "the Beatles were the best thing.." Fuck the Beatles, I hated people who were always going on about the fuckin' Beatles. They're dead. They're ugly now. Get them out of my sight.

I mean really the beatles were not good at all! I do not understand how they managed to become supposedly the best band! they are a classic but not in a good way if that makes any sense "No elvis beatles or the rolling stones"

Noted. Now if only those mean people who gave The Beatles' albums good reviews would take them back, everything would be hunky dory.

Citation please?

I mean there's this, in which Trent says, "The Beatles or Led Zeppelin are the ultimate archetypes for what a rock band can and should be." I guess he didn't mean that?

Moron. I hate trolls.

People may not listen to bands from nowadays, but the musical landscape in 50 years will still have been altered by this decade's music. Take, for example, Hawkwind or Can.

NIN and Garbage have already left an indelible mark on modern production techniques, and hell, Garbage's music has barely lasted the past ten years. The Strokes are still very much being echoed, Is This It? was the closest thing to a Nevermind in the true alternative world since Nevermind.

In terms of radio play, Radiohead, Coldplay, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Greenday are all going to become classic rock for better or for worse. Remember, current classic rock stations will play something great like The Who or Jefferson Airplane, then push mediocrity like Tom Petty or absolute shit like Jefferson Starship. So its going to be a mixed bag.

Is the Stokes "still being echoed" a good thing? A lot of those bands, Strokes, Libertines all sort of sound the same and while not bad, isn't all that great either--IMHO.

I absolutely LOVE Garbage, but I'm not sure how influential they are. Maybe it's more accurate to say how influential Butch Vig has been?

That's a bit harsh on TP, although I generally agree with what you write and yes, Jefferson Starship is pure shit.

On the Strokes- I'm not sure if its a good thing. I personally havnt been able to get into them, but the wave of post punk revival bands they brought with them Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, These New Puritans, The Horror's (second album), The XX have mostly been great. Though on the other hand, you get Editors, The Rapture, Bloc Party, The Killers, and White Lies. As a whole, though, I'm glad the movement took off, even if it is slowing down.

On Garbage, aye great band, but yeah when I said production, I did mean Butch Vig. But not necessarily his Nevermind, Dirty, or Siamese Dream production. I really think that modern producers took the cue from his Garbage output.

On Tom Petty, sorry if I'm being harsh, but I firmly believe Tom Petty, Steve Miller Band, and Boston make up the holy trinity of classic rock mediocrity. Again, not necessarily bad, but downright mediocre and undeserving of airplay. Except Fly Like An Eagle, but that goes without saying.

New car add with John Lennon
[www.youtube.com]

In very poor taste, IMHO.

02/24/10 8:41 PM

wtf is with all of the Yoko Ono backlash? shes an amazing musician, John Lennon's biggest fan. And a consistently anti commercial one at that. She didnt break The Beatles up, The Beatles broke The Beatles up.

02/24/10 8:45 PM

Yeah ^^^ agreed on that one.

As for the Lennon car advert? I cried, I was so disgusted.

I like her music, but it's definitely an acquired taste. I love the Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band album.

Okay...Sgt. Pepper or Magical Mystery Tour--which is better?

Discuss...

Sgt. Pepper... more cohesive. MMT has a few good tunes, but is kinda of a clusterfuck of drug induced nonsense. Sgt. P. was a COHESIVE collection of drug induced nonsense, and just better songs. MMT feels like throwaways... for the most part.

Hmm, I actually disagree here. As much as I love SP (especially the mono version), I would argue MMT has stronger songs, with the title track, "I am the Walrus," "Strawberry Fields Forever," and "All you Need is Love" being better than most of SP.
