My personal all-time favorite album, just ahead of The Fragile.

lol, Regardless of whether or not I agree or disagree with you, this is still merely opinion.

I love them all. John because he was so angry; Paul because he tempered John's anger so well and yes, because he was so sappy at times; George because if there was a spiritual center to The Beatles he was it; and Ringo, sweet Ringo who every so often would look at very angry, very bitter, very biting John Lennon and have the balls to say "It's crap!" and have John actually listen to him (and the other two Beatles would as well). Ringo the glue.

When they split up, they took their individual talents with them, but try and tell me that when John was alone in the studio listening to Phil Spector or whoever kiss his ass, that he didn't sit back for a second and think to himself how nice it would have been to have Paul there saying John this is great, but... add this or take away that, or George adding that perfect sitar bit ala Norwegian Wood, or even Ringo to honestly tell him - even with the threat of John's famous wrath - "It's crap!"

The same sits true for all of them alone. You can listen to the solo efforts and if you pay attention, you can hear the parts that lack the input of the others. The bits that fall... just... short, somehow. Just not quite perfect... almost, but not quite.

They all are great. That's that, let's stop with the this one is better than that one... please? smiling smiley

I agree with you to a large extent. I think what you write about what each member brought to the table is quite accurate. I also agree that the solo efforts of McCartney and later Harrison (his first album is brilliant) suffered from the lack of input from the others (I won't include Ringo as he didn't write any of the Beatles songs).

Still, (and you are totally correct, it is just an opinion) I think Plastic Ono Band is the best thing any member of the Beatles ever wrote, solo or while still a Beatle. As much as I like McCartney and recognize his musical genius, I don't think Plastic Ono Band would have been any better if he had contributed to it. In fact, it wouldn't have been as good. It's the rawest, most personal, and brutal album I've ever listened to, and it's perfect the way it is--Lennon at his very best.

As much as I love the Beatles, overall, I actually liked Lennon's solo stuff more. In general, although some of his albums are inconsistent, when they are good, to me personally, they are more satisfyingly than the Beatles. POB and Imagine are wonderful. Sometime in New York City kind of sucked, but Mind Games and Walls and Bridges are underrated efforts, especially the latter. Double Fantasy and the posthumous follow-up Milk and Honey saw some of Lennon's best work. "I Don't Want to Face it" and "Watchin' the Wheals" are as good as anything he wrote in the Beatles.

Isn't that rad? I haven't got the remaster yet, but playing the Rock Band game I experienced the same thing, it was very cool

Oh, and it Ringo, I love him, but I love him the least, sorry Ringo

The RB game also brings out stuff I never noticed. I was reading th stuff on the site how they never noticed the bass going crazy on Taxman. Sure enough I was like goddamn.

Game has made me appreciate Paul's bass playing a lot more than I originally did.

I've been in a White Album kick recently (my favorite Beatles album). I can not express accurately in words my love for that album. It's one of those albums that sounds weird when you take a song from it and put it in a shuffle or mix, because you always expect to hear the next song in the order (imagine the applause and shout at the end of Bungalow Bill not being cut off abruptly by While My Guitar Gently Weeps). George Martin has always said that he wished it to be a single album...but I think it's perfect just the way it is.

UM YEAH......... try playing that shit on EXPERT!!! lol I do RB bass, pretty well I might add & the first time I saw Taxman I was going "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" lol

John was once quoted somewhere (I looked and can't seem to find it *sigh* citation fail) as saying that Paul's bass and Ringo's drumming were at the very least as good as if not superior to anyone else's and it bothered him that anyone would run them down by saying that they lacked ability.

Inorite?!?!

My hubby does RB drums (yes, I know it's not the real thing, but on RB the drums & vox are probably closest to real) he was dying trying to keep up with Ringo. See, Ringo has a secret that not everybody knows, he's ambidextrous. If you watch footage of him in action you can see it. NO ONE can imitate his style exactly because of this. He'll be going along doing his tic tic tic with his right hand and all of his bah dah dah dah's with his left then inexplicably switch, tic tic tic goes to his left hand and bah dah dah dah's go to his right. It's crazy and awesome all at once. grinning smiley Mad props and love for Ringo.

diggin' on BACK TO THE EGG by wings right now

underrated album, at least nowadays. don't know how it was recieved at the time, it was a couple months before i was born.

Phil Collins made a great point about Ringo on a Sgt. Pepper doc I saw. He said something along the lines of this: most drummers out there, if told to play a Ringo drum part would probably would fail at doing so. I'm sure that's not 100% correct, but you get the point. Ringo may not have been your typical flashy drummer, hitting every drum in sight as fast as possible; as a matter of fact, Ringo and the other 3 were opposed to that kind of drumming anyway (he refused to do a drum solo on The End, but was eventually convinced). But even if he's not a complicated drummer by any means, his style can't be duplicated. Those dragging drum fills that he does are so unconventional (Stawberry Fields jumps to mind when I think of those). When you hear one of those, you know it's Ringo. Remember, back in Liverpool they all thought Ringo was the best drummer around, and he probably was too. That's one of the reasons they kicked out Pete Best (that and George Martin thought he was crap).

I've come across many people who down play him as a drummer or as a member of The Beatles. Give 'em a good smack or two and they should wise up.

Got another free mag on The Beatles with The Mirror.

Also I heard that apparently AC/DC are catching up and might take over The Beatles as the biggest band in the world, although I think the bloke who was interviewing Brian Johnson was probably just getting ahead of himself as The Beatles have sold 1.6 billion and AC/DC have sold 200million so I still think they have a long way to go to catch up.

I haven't been bothered with the list thing I'll go back to it tomorrow.

ac/dc are a kind of band that had the luck of having almost the entirety of their career take place duing the absolute peak years of the album format, pre-internet

about half of the beatles career took place while the 45 single was the dominant format and i'm not even sure they properly counted sales back then

lol, Yeah, I'll hold my breath while that happens! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't mention it in my other post Rheebles but Charlie is looking excedingly handsome here as of late! Have you seen Limelight? I cry, cry, cry at the end of that film.

umm...ac/dc are way behind U2

i read a very interesting article about 6 months ago.
it was about how to gauge the biggest rock band title..
and basically it reasoned..it was impossible

they said for the time (60's era)..there's no question about it
The Beatles ..but now? how could you gauge who the next beatles would be..
again they reasoned...it's impossible

but, they said like most things...it's not the answer that changes but the question
more people are asking nowadays not...who the biggest band in the world is...but, who's going to be the next U2?

I adore that film, Charlie looks absolutely gorgeous despite being in his 60s, it's one of my favourites of his and yeah it's one of the few that makes me cry everytime I see it and Lion King when Mufasa dies.

TBHA, have you ever heard emitt rhodes? i've seen him described many times as a "one man beatles" and the dude was just a genius

i just picked up a new box set of his stuff, and i think he was unfairly maligned in his time for ripping off the beatles. while he was certainly beatle-esque i think he was arguably more of a studio prodigy in the mold of todd rundgren.

Forgive my ignorance re: Todd Rundgren, I've heard of him of course; but the honest truth is that if you played him for me, my I would have to ask you who the artist was.

As for Emitt Rhodes, he sounds a LOT like Bad Finger. A fantastic recommendation, thanks!

10/19/09 5:13 PM

A little off-topic: Todd Rundgren rocks. Pick Up A Wizard, A True Star. You won't regret it.

A little on-topic: I heard the Mary Hopkin (Apple recording artist) song Goodbye for the first time the other day. Paul wrote the song, and you don't even need to look at the credits to figure that out; his style is all over it. Anyways, I enjoyed it a lot. It says on Wikipedia that there's a bootleg of Paul's version lurking about. Now I must search the internet for it.

UPDATE: just heard Paul's demo on youtube.

emitt rhodes and badfinger are both pretty awesome, yeah

also todd rundgren was truly the trent reznor of his day, a complete studio rock pioneer. discipline is correct in his recommendation of the album A WIZARD, A TRUE STAR

check out the opening track

I'm pretty sure Rock and Roll Pussy (Beatles connection: it's about Lennon) was on Trent's house music mix on The Fragilty tour. Trent even stated in an interview I read somewhere that he came from the "Todd Rundgren school" of doing things.
