David Bowie-LOW

Bogie is your tour guide through the Cold War-era Eastern Bloc with 5-6 straight shots of weird, angular synthy pop rock. The snare drum sound changed the world. The second half is dark, melancholy instrumentals.

Guided By Voices-ALIEN LANES

Getting into this album and BEE THOUSAND is like being invited into a secret society that trades compilations of the best bootleg demos of cult albums that might have been. Four track masterpieces, set the land speed record for hooks. Music by and for music nerds. Robert Pollard is possibly the greatest rock melody writer alive today.

The Who-THE WHO SELL OUT

Back when pirate radio actually meant people were subverting the BBC's stranglehold on the airwaves by broadcasting from boats off the harbor, The Who put out this insane album that sounds like you're hearing it broadcast on pirate radio, including parody ads for actual products. Keith Fucking Moon. This is one meant for mono.

The Velvet Underground-SELF-TITLED

On their third album, Lou Reed and Doug Yule battle it out for who can write the sweetest, quietest pop songs. Probably the only time having all the instruments and amps stolen worked for a band. The version of SOME KINDA LOVE on the closet mix found on PEEL SLOWLY AND SEE completely trumps the regular version.

The Kinks-ARTHUR (OR THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE)

Ray Davies' masterpiece as far as I'm concerned. The only flawless concept album in history, the overarching story describes a poor family's move from Britain to Australia, and the toll of World Wars I&II on British life, all depicted in slice of life scenes. It sounds like a mess but somehow it worked. The songs AUSTRALIA to SHANGRILA may possibly be the best one-two punch in all of British rock history.

HONORABLE MENTION: Both Aphex Twin SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS albums.
