Metal is more than about how brutal you are, how fast you can play, and how well you can scream yourself bloody. I've heard Fear Factory and they bore me.

But whatever, maybe I am a bit of a purist.
metal also has to have great lyrics

hey, mate, I know they completely rip off of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath's style, but they do a damn good job of it, and put on a damn fine show

Yeah...technically, but then there's Cannibal Corpse....

They're a great band but there's nothing really all that earth-shattering about the lyrical content.

1. Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops
2. Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics

That's a lotta exclamation marks in the thread title... Also, another annoying short faves list. A Top 10 would make much more sense.

Extremely hard to choose, but here we go:

Apocalyptica: Worlds Collide
Metallica: Death Magnetic (it's currently my fave album by them)
Black Label Society: Blessed Hellride
Judas Priest: Painkiller
Rammstein: Mutter

Oh, and for the record: NIN's Broken is NOT a metal album.

ALso for the record...rammstein are not metal...

03/22/09 5:10 PM

Right, Rammstein is soft-rock.

03/23/09 6:14 PM

Death - 1990 - Spiritual Healing
Dimmu Borgir - 2001 - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
Mudvayne - 2000 - L.D. 50
Pantera - 1990 - Cowboys From Hell
Sepultura - 1991 - Arise

5 is a tough limit

03/26/09 3:28 PM

Wow, this will be difficult. To ease the pain, I will not order them in any special way. It's a five-pronged tie!

Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Primus - Frizzle Fry

Had I more room, I would've mentioned Cynic, Dream Theater, X Japan, Iron Maiden, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Mastodon, et cetera. I chose those five based on both overall importance to the genre and staying power in my own damn mind.

03/27/09 2:21 PM

1. Metallica - Master of Puppets
2. Trivium - Shogun
3. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
4. Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
5. Lamb of God - Sacrament / Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies

Honorable mention: Megadeth - Rust in Peace, Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Metallica (pre- load, death magnetic), Trivium - Ascendancy / Crusade, Machine Head - The Blackening

03/27/09 3:24 PM

Megadeth: Peace Sells...
Pantera: The Great Southern Trendkill
Testament: Demonic (Seriously Underrated IMO)
Slayer: South Of Heaven
Opeth: Ghost Reveries

lol! I'm having a hard time too, so many bands where they scream like little girls. what I started doing is turning it down so its just fast noise. sometimes they try so hard its silly

can't list albums yet but these 3 bands are awesome, and I guess this is the 'love' metal variety. Why are there so many sucky metal bands from Sweden and Germany? I mean come on at least speak english properly, their accent is so sleazy and I'm russian so I know its possible to sing normally, they're faking it. its ew

thanks last fm for--

Paradise Lost
Type O Negative
Cathedral

Moonspell - The Antidote

Wow, Moonspell, here : )

Did you ever saw them live? Very cool to see Moonspell on your top 5.

I rather prefer the old stuff from them - not paying much attention to their last records - but it is always interesting to see their work valued by someone. They would be honored, for sure, to see the reference you made.

08/07/10 3:17 PM

Opeth - FOUR WAY TIE: My Arms Your Hearse/Still Life/Blackwater Park/Deliverance
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss/Christ Illusion
Dimmu Borgir - Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia/Death Cult Armageddon/In Sorte Diaboli
Behemoth - The Apostasy

Impossible to pick just five.

Did someone actually list St. Anger???

08/13/10 12:59 PM

The only good thing to come out of St. Anger is Some Kind of Monster. The film. Not the song. God no, not the song.

But the post was obviously a joke, give him some credit.

Some of the @#$%& in this thread amuses me.

My five favorite metal albums:

1. Metallica, "Master of Puppets"
2. Black Sabbath, "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
3. Megadeth, "Rust in Peace"
4. Ozzy Osbourne, "No More Tears"
5. Pantera, "Vulgar Display of Power"

08/15/10 4:58 PM

Lateralus by Tool
Wavering Radiant by Isis
A Determinism Of Morality by Rosetta
Crack the Skye by Mastodon
St. Anger by Metallica

08/15/10 5:46 PM

and the count for this page has St. Anger tied with Master of Puppets.

08/15/10 5:47 PM

St. Anger is probably the worst album of all-time, at least by a well-known established rock band.

08/15/10 6:42 PM

By one with credentials at any rate. I mean, they did write One.
