After hearing "Bad Romance" on the radio at work about a hundred times (a pretty catchy song that is now dull and boring from being overplayed) and hearing all this hype and controversy about Lady Gaga, I decided to download her first album (The Fame) to see what she was all about.

It had a lot of fun and catchy songs. That was about it. I didn't find any of the songs showing any big talent like some people have claimed, but I also thought NONE of the songs were complete trash like other people say. It was tolerable and a few notches above some other pop shit I've heard.

01/25/10 11:27 PM

The Fame Monster is definitely the album that shows her talent.

01/26/10 12:31 AM

yeah, The Fame was "big" and "fun" and "stupid." Its The Fame Monster that she actually backs up the claims as an artist. In my opinion, she's still shit and her artistry amounts to high brow whining about being too popular, but I can atleast give her credit for trying now. Bad Romance atleast made for a great music video.

The "Paparazzi" vid was pretty good too.

01/27/10 11:18 AM

I agree that the Fame was just for fun. It could have been a lot better album. The hit songs are pure pop gold, the others not so much. I wished every song could have been as sexy as Lovegame. Gaga could be the pop version of Peaches, with her raw sexuality.

So I was hoping for that with the Fame Monster. However she didn't go that route and surprised me with stronger songwriting. Some of her new material sounds similar to that of the Fame. Maybe when she gets those musical ideas out of her head she can evolve into something better.

Madonna has always been the female version of David Bowie (in terms of remaking herself over and over, not talent) I think we need a new Madonna (Gaga) and put the old one to bed.

I'm glad you added your remark about Madonna's talent compared to Bowie's in brackets, because even if Madonna was an art school dropout with a Julliard honors degree she could never match the musical chops of Bowie.

That being said I don't hate Madonna you just can't compare her in anyway to the legend that is Bowie.

As for Lady Gaga I don't hate her either, the whole pop thing really isn't my cup of tea, but she does have an edge over the other contemporaries in the field that she is in.

I look at pop music this way, if it is reaching somebody then it has a purpose no matter how fake, plastic, producer driven and written for commercial purposes, to make money for some corporations share holders, it is. All you can hope for is that the younger audiences listening to it, will develop an ear for artistic music with substance. We all listened to shit when we were 6 years old. LOL

I must be ten years ahead or something grinning smiley

Well I don't know if retarded is the right word but more like weird. I look back at artists of the 90's that I as a kid liked and often think to myself "I tried to dress like that?! Oh man that looks uncool now..." but who knows time will
tell.

Huh. I've yet to hear The Fame Monster. It would be nice to see her evolve beyond standard pop fare though.

In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto: Anyone can cook. But I realize that only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more.

More or less, that quote always comes to my mind when stuff like this comes up. Basically to me just says if someone gets something out of it,who am I to piss on their parade?

Im sorry but everytime I hear the intro 'Ra mah ra mah mah, ga ga ga gah whatever' to Bad Romance I just think its stupid. It feels exactly like a moment when someone does something that embarrasses themselves so badly that you feel embarrassed.

01/29/10 12:10 AM

Eh it's pretty catchy though.

I thought she looked awesome at the Grammy's!

02/01/10 2:26 PM

Yeah she's carrying her own universe...

That's cool!

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw this was that it reminded me of The Jetsons. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where Armani got his idea for it.

Also, if you look at head shots, It's clear that Gaga is wearing a wig mounted on fabric similar to what's covering her arms.

As for her performance with Elton John, I thought it was very well-done. The gay man in me thought it was FABULOUS!!!

I loved how chunky and fugly she looked compared to her CGI version in the Bad Romance video.

goddamn when the hell are you just gonna let it go? o_o

02/01/10 5:24 PM

I liked the performance.

02/01/10 9:31 PM

It was very fabulous!!!! The mentor with the new apprentice! But seriously Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga was simply the best performance of the night.

02/01/10 9:37 PM

Eh I really wouldn't say they were the best, but I did love the combo.

They were actually third best for me lol; my list is:
Green Day + Cast of American Idiot
Eminem + Travis Barker
Gaga and Elton John

Holy shit, is that from the Grammys?? That just makes me regret missing the Grammys.

She started getting my attention with the "Bad Romance" video. She keeps reminding me of Marilyn Manson. and now look at that last photo posted here...she looks dead-set like MM!!!!

My fantasy is that she could be the next MM. ..I hope she has it in her.

A boy can dream.
