Since I've got a Sunn O))) thread up and running, I thought I'd do the same for Boris, who collaborated with Sunn O))) on the record Altar (2006). Highly prolific three piece from Japan who encompass a range of styles/genres including doom, drone, heavy metal, psychedelic rock and noise rock, their latest full-length record Smile was released this year on Southern Lord.

And in news that is quite surprising, but refreshing nonetheless, Boris will be supporting Nine Inch Nails from Nov 11 - Nov 22. This decision restores my faith in Trent Reznor a fair deal.

Cool. Thanks for the link in the other misplaced thread.
So what songs are good enough to spend 99 cents downloading?

Never heard of them until it was posted on nin, I am now waiting for the cd's to come!

YES!!! I love that collaboration!!! So So Much. I am absolutely in love with the song

The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep)

I have to be honest I don't love Sunn O))) by themselves... but I really like Boris and I was stellarly (if that's a word) excited when I found out they were opening for NIN

from the album altar... The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep) as I posted above. It is a gorgeous slow song!

I've seen them live in a church! Everybody were stood on pews, I went flying when the drummer decided to launch himself off the pulpit. They are amazing.

Trent Reznor has a way of introducing people to new music. When searching the Internet for Boris cds I found many to choose from. I thought this would be a good opportunity for anyone who reads this to share some personal Boris favorites with the rest of us. Thank you xoxo from kansas city

They rock and so do Sunn 0))). I recently stumbled across this gem yesterday

I didn't like them until I heard the album Pink

09/23/08 3:57 PM

They have six songs streamed at their MySpace page. Their music is ... heavy, fast, dreamy, slow, and whatever you like.

If you are into harsh noise, you would want to listen to their release as Boris with Merzbow, Sun Baked Snow Cave and Rock Dream.

My all-time favourite Boris CDs are Flood, Mabuta No Ura and Pink. With the latest album, Smile, they expanded their musical horizon again. It's just amazing.

I just dropped $200 on Vein [U.S. version], Long Hair and Tights, and Akuma No Uta vinyl.

I knew Nerd would be all up on this thread!

I'm still trying to digest.. gotta be honest, not in love with them as of now.

Saw Boris & Sunn0))) live last year (I think?) and it was bloody awesome!!! Boris opened and were one of the most impressive live bands I've ever seen (Japanese bands KICK ASS - So full of energy!!!). Unfortunately I only have Akuma No Uta on CD, though I have downloaded both versions of the Vein album (love both, especially the hardcore version - so unlike all other Boris, yet it still has the Boris flavour to it <if that makes sense>winking smiley
If anyone is attending NIN in the next couple of weeks, BE EARLY, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS OUT ON WITNESSING BORIS!!! SEN-FUCKING-SATIONAL!!!

Pink got me into this band, and now I have Akuma No Uta, Amplifier Worship, Altar, Rainbow, and their latest Smile and love em all. I was so stoked when I found they were chosen as the opener for NIN, I'm actually going to see them play their own show in Toronto then drive an hour to Hamilton the next night to catch them w/ NIN. Can't wait

11/07/08 11:02 PM

I wish I could have seen them open for NIN instead of Crystal Castles.

11/07/08 11:45 PM

Hmm, I wonder how they'll be when I see them on the 15th. Should be pretty cool.

11/19/08 8:17 AM

Saw them in Grand Rapids. I'm sorry to say, but I was not impressed. Maybe I had my hopes set too high?

I saw them in GR, too. I really enjoyed them, except the last song.

I just dont get it.
I have no idea what they were trying to do last night but it was awful.

11/21/08 10:02 PM

I was at the Grand Rapids, IA show on Nov.20th and Boris opened up for NIN. I was wondering if anyone knows the setlist they played or would perhaps be able to help me in figuring out one of the songs they did, it was probably close to 15minutes long, not sure if they were just jamming out or if they normally have songs that long on their albums, regardless they are very talented musicians.

Do you mean Grand Rapids, MI, or Cedar Rapids, IA? I was at the Grand Rapids show, but I still couldn't help you with the setlist. Just wanting to clarify for others that may be able to help you.

Cedar Rapids, IA - sorry about any confusion.

Boris were awesome sat night in tulsa! I know they played my neighbor satan, and the song before that was statement. what was the song after my neighbor satan? very long droning doom, which changed to a freak out jam and then back to the doom. awesome. thanks for sharing this song title if you know.

11/24/08 11:57 AM

Theyre doing a show in Detroit, I may have to go and see them on their own.

11/25/08 4:49 AM

I actually liked seeing them in Tulsa. The drummer reminded me of Animal from the Muppets, he rocked smiling smiley

I don't know, they're better than The Bug IMO.

12/17/08 6:56 AM

I cannot believe there is not more discussion on this band seeing as NIN fans were lucky enough to experience them live. Seen them 3 times, own pretty much all of their discography (well, a lot of it) and have as my lovely Christmas present from my significant other Rock Dream on purple vinyl. Beautiful.

Keep in mind the newest album "Smile", is significantly different depending on what version you get. The JN version is more noisy and experimental overall.

My favourite album is "Amplifier Worship".
