Just picked up the American version of Smile

"Ka Re Ha Te Ta Sa Ki--No One's Grieve" is spectacular. Unfortunately FYE sucks and doesn't have anything else Boris made.

Picked up Pink. It rocks. Combination of 'shoegaze', straight up ballz out hard rock, and a little doomy stuff mixed in. Most def a winner!

one of my favourite Boris albums is Vein, released in two entirely different versions. One is a noisy-drone album, the other is a hardcore/crust album (I prefer the latter)

I hope I can see this band again, they were superb

bought the Japanese version of Smile. its infinitely better than the American version. The songs are just more thought out. I dont know why Boris released a relatively shoddy American version.

seriously? i disagree for the following reasons:
– mastering is much worse in terms of compression (i assume most won't care)
– the remix(original?) of Message/Statement is incredibly weird and seems to be fucked with just for the sake of fucking with it
– the mix of the untitled track is infinitely superior in terms of power and volume on the Southern Lord version
– i think the Southern Lord vinyl version beats any CD version.

however, don't confuse my nitpicking with the statement "the Diwphalanx version of Smile sucks," because i enjoy it quite a bit as well – just not as much as the Southern Lord vinyl.

i consider the Pink vinyl (on Southern Lord) to be the true, unbeatably incredible gem in the Boris discography. the full versions of Pseudo-Bread, Farewell, and My Machine are just... unmatched. plus the mastering is off the cuff. get it if you can find it!

I've been a fan of Boris for awhile now (I agree with the earlier comment about bands from Japan) and I love bands with this much variety to their music. I like most of their work but I'm partial to the combined Evil Wave Form and Giddiness Throne from the Drone/Evil CD's as well as all their dirty rock. For a couple months I would wake up each morning to buzz-in as my alarm. Something weird about waking up to an uncomfortable baby cry/laugh. I also like their collaborations with Merzbow.

Lots to choose from from this band. Actually even though I am a fan of noise rock and I don't mind the more 'out there' stuff I kind of wish they would do more dirty rock cause they do such a good job of it. Some nice straight on 3 min trashy rock noise to get me all fired up...

Ah, well, I suppose its a matter of preference. I come from the Feedbacker, Absolutego side of Boris, so I prefer the version of Smile that sounds like its been fucked with. I dont know, that extra layer of fuzz just seems to add more power to everything, when its as well sculpted as Boris does. The American Message/Statement seems so, well, plain. But yeah, I agree with you on the compression; I dont know why that is.

I saw them open for NIN and was pretty impressed. I have to admit when they started I was a little concerned about witnessing a Sushi K moment (or the rock equivalent), but by about the middle of it I was in a trance.

Super BUMP because the version of Feedbacker on Rock Dream is stunningly beautiful.

"Smile" was definitely album of the 2008 for me.
And their "Venom" t-shirt is pretty cool.

I didn't know these new releases. Thank you for your helpful post!

I saw them live a year and a half ago. Good show, though I missed half of it due to being late. They had a ton of CDs I've been wanting to get by them for ages (in particular, Dronevil), but couldn't afford them. Was a really unlucky night. I love how Wata always has the same expression on her face in every picture, video, or performance I've ever seen by them. :p

I own a lot of their albums but I feel none of them ever truly stuck with me, other than Altar with sunn o))). My favorite record of theirs though is probably Soundtrack from Film "Mabuta no Ura". It's packaging and everything is really fuckin' cool. It's a soundtrack to a film they made up that doesn't actually exist. The packaging comes with a ton of cards and pictures from this supposed film along with small excerpts from the story. The music itself is very ambient and drone, but not in a dark way like a lot of their drone stuff is. It brings to mind abandoned cities in the daytime - the artwork which mainly consists of photos of Wata in empty places looking lonely, seems to back this up. Really cool.

"A Bao A Qu" is a good song to download from them - it's off that album. Seems like one of the most single-worthy songs I've heard from them that isn't from Pink or Smile.

08/20/09 12:46 PM

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Heavy Rocks yet. Awesome album - recommended for people new to Boris. I really like their drone stuff too though.

This is good news. I will check out the Toronto show : )

Boris are an awesome band.

I wanted to see them when they were playing a show here earlier this week but I was broke.

07/30/10 5:57 PM

Saw them a couple of months ago. Blown away almost, but doesn't quite cover it!
Seriously, do ANYTHING you have to in order to acquire tickets to see this band.

bloodflower85, as Acharis says, "do ANYTHING you have to in order to acquire tickets to see this band." Indeed you North Americans are lucky. We in Tokyo have not had a decent chance to see them live this year - the only one occasion was an all-nighter club event (with the legendary Cluster from Germany).

08/09/10 1:38 PM

Looking forward to tonight. Anyone know what the sets have been like this tour? Are they playing rock or are they doing more of their experimental/drone type music

08/10/10 6:56 AM

@idle
Check out Setlist.fm:

Probably this set (for July 24) is the most basic one for this tour.

I know I'm repeating myself but I'm envious. Enjoy the show. smiling smiley

I did enjoy the show thanks. Bands were great, sound was great, crowd was great.

I didn't know the Russian Circles before last night but I know them now. They were really good and got the crowd very warmed up for Boris. Boris played a good mix of songs and had everyone captivated. All around great show.

I met two nice fellows and we sat outside after the show talking for 40 min or so. The conversation got a bit too deep and a bit too political at times but they were nice people and good company for awhile.

Worst part of the night: I got a $110 ticket for turning left during restricted times : /

Can't wait to see these guys live again

Boris is downright amazing. I've seen them a few times during their past tour, doing a headline show two times as well as a festival show. Their energy on the stage is indescribable. Plus, the newer, softer songs from Attention Please and New Album work surprisingly well among their doomier, heavier stuff from, let's say, Amplifier Worship. They know no boundaries and explore a whole different world of genres. I like it when a band does that.

I'm repeating others here, but if you do get a chance to see them live, do not hesitate and get yourself a ticket. You're in for a real treat.
