Saw Chickenfoot last night in Boston and they rocked hard. They are one rock n' roll band that you should try to catch live. Incredible energy and stellar musicianship. No VH or Hagar solo, just Chickenfoot, which is fine as their two albums are very good. Chad Smith even joined the band for a few songs, as drummer Kenny Aronoff is filling in on this tour do to Chad's commitment to RHCP.

Nice to see Mike and Sam playing together. Last time I saw those two was in '02 when Mike joined Sam for a few songs. Last time I saw Mike and Sam play an entire show was back in '95. Holy shit time flies.

Tour past June has been canceled- was planning on getting Milwaukee tickets tomorrow.

According to a RS article some of the band members hate each other- BIG FUCKING SURPRISE!!! Shit. :/

The summer dates, as of right now, have been postponed, not cancelled. Hopefully there will be an explanation. I don't want to jump to any conclusions just yet.

Van Halen Getting Along Fine, Taking a Break, And Planning to Extend Tour!

May 18, 2012

Just when we all were beginning to think we were going to get a killer Van Halen album and an entire tour without any drama whatsoever, look what happens!

Yesterday, Van Halen POSTPONED (not canceled!) most of their Summer tour dates with no reason given. Immediately, speculation ran wild. Fans wondered if there were health issues. Rolling Stone quotes a mysterious “source with knowledge of the tour” who supposedly said the band members “hate each other” and are “arguing like mad.”

The Van Halen News Desk now has some answers form our trusted and proven sources. Other than those Summer dates having to be moved, it’s actually good news.

First off, no one in the band is sick. No health problems.

Second, we knew right away that Rolling Stone’s “source” is completely wrong, and can not possibly be a person with actual inside knowledge of the tour, because all four band members have been getting along splendidly throughout the entire tour. Roth and the Van Halen’s talk every day, and they are all smiles on stage. Everyone who’s seen the tour or even youtube videos can confirm that.

In fact, the band is on such a high from playing together this year and they were really taken aback by the Rolling Stone quote. They’re older and wiser and haven’t had any issues with one another.

Why were these dates postponed? The band has been working tirelessly for the last 18 months – writing and recording “A Different Kind Of Truth”, filming the “Tattoo” video, rehearsing, putting together the show themselves (lighting, the videos, the stage, routing the tour, and lots of behind the scenes stuff that most people don’t even know about). The band wants the second leg to be as awesome as the first. And for that to happen they want to put more time into the planning of it. Not just continue on with the same show.

Van Halen is very enthusiastic about the rest of the tour and wants be on the road for a long time. Just how long remains to be seen, but we’ll say that the tour will probably continue into next year. They are now considering touring Australia and Japan in the near future.

As it stands now, the 31 postponed US shows are due to be rescheduled. There should be some sort of official announcement forthcoming.

Interesting but I'll take any source from any band with a grain of salt these days. I'll plan for the worst and hope for the best- to be honest Tuesdays are the shittiest days for me to see a concert (travel quite a bit for work) so would love to see a different day of the week. grinning smiley

David Lee Roth promises Van Halen to return, with monster trucks
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef016305bb4128970d-600wi

Van Halen will be back, lead singer David Lee Roth promises, and when the band returns, it may be bringing along some extra heavy machinery.

In a video the band's posted (embedded below), it doesn't appear that Roth is using one of his colorful rock 'n' roll metaphors when he tells fans to expect a "super-sized monster-truck rally Van Halen tractor-pull sort-of-event" when the band eventually reschedules its 30-plus postponed tour dates. No clue as to what that means, but he says it will happen as "soon as the band learns to speak Australian."

"We're going to be bringing that back around through the United States," Roth says in the video, which he said was filmed in the woods just north of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The reformed '70s hard rock heavyweights will return home with a June 1 show at Staples Center, one of the dates that wasn't unexpectedly taken off the tour docket last week.

Contrary to rumors that the famously volatile band isn't getting along, Roth said Van Halen is simply attempting to avoid exhaustion. "We bit off way more than we could chew, when it came to scheduling," Roth said. "The band is winning, but our schedule has been sidelined for unnecessary roughness."
The postponements came just one month after the band added nearly 20 dates to its Live Nation-produced trek. The promoter declined to comment on the cancellations, and Roth offered no hint as to when the canceled dates would be rescheduled, adding only that the band intends to be on tour for two years. Roth said that axing the dates will prevent the reunion from becoming "the robot zombie tour."

On the other hand, Roth gave an open-hearted embrace to all those who would like to bring in recording devices to the band's gigs. "We're one of the few bands who relishes you bringing in whatever camera. If you can carry it in, and pull the trigger on it yourself, then please do."

I pulled out the Twister soundtrack and gave it a listen for the first time since around '97. It's actually a great 90s comp, but at the time, I bought it solely for the Van Halen song "Humans Being."

It's been a while since I've listened to that song, but I think that it's great, one of my favorites from the Sammy Hagar era, in fact. It rocks like a mother and Sam and Ed never sounded so aggressive. The song led to Van Hagar's demise, but at least they went out with a bang.

Humans Being is one of the the few songs I can never get bored of.
I wonder which areas Eddie wanted to change of the lyrics.

This statement just in from the Van Halen camp:

“Eddie Van Halen underwent an emergency surgery for a severe bout of Diverticulitis. No further surgeries are needed and a full recovery is expected within 4 – 6 months.

Van Halen’s scheduled November 2012 tour of Japan is currently being rescheduled and the band looks forward to seeing and playing for their fans in 2013.”

From the VHND

Good news for Van Halen fans! In a new interview with Faster Louder, David Lee Roth reveals that Van Halen is planning to spend some time recording new music after they complete their Japan tour in June. Dave mentions “preparing for some new recording and some new songs.” While this is great to hear, we’ll be cautiously optimistic and not count on a full album being released anytime soon. We think they might be considering releasing one or more songs rather than an album. We’ll see!

Are there any plans for new Van Halen recorded material?

Yes. I was just on the phone with the fellas … We are going to be getting together, not this month, at the end of June to start preparing for some new recording and some new songs, but we’re touring a little bit this year. That’s kind of a surprise. We’re in Australia, we’re doing a Japan tour for a couple of weeks, and we’re doing some American stuff. That comes as a bit of a surprise. Van Halen projects are a bit like James Bond movies. They come around about once every three-and-a-half years. Any sooner and it’s like, “Weren’t you just here?” It’s like that third Johnny Depp pirate movie [Pirates Of The Caribbean]. Weren’t you guys just here? Oh, that’s a rough one right. Leave before the sun sets, quit just before the party begins to disintegrate, don’t be the first one back in next week. We’ve been around for so long that that is a deft kind of a tactic. And there’s politics. So with that in mind I imagine we’ll be doing extensive touring and travelling outside the United States after this upcoming tour.

We plan ahead by about two-and-a-half years in advance, which sounds extravagant … [But] from the time you go, “Let’s start to write some songs”, until all of the machines of production and humanity kick in, things move achingly slow. Achingly slow. Especially if you are art-centric, if you want something to last, it’s going to take a long time to put it all together. Quick up is quick down. We know about one hit wonders and we know about fast, but it’s about three years, it takes about three years.

I think probably the biggest issue last time around was Ed’s health [he was forced to undergo emergency surgery for Diverticulitis]. We have been struggling with that since we started recording this last record, but we’re tough. A lot of artists are very fond of checking into the hospital with “exhaustion”, whatever that is, and making sure everybody knows about it – and we don’t do that. But behind the scenes, there’s a lot of fragile politics, there’s a lot of world weary bodies here. You’ve heard the expression 40 is the new 30 … Well, for me, 58 is the new 80 [laughs] So we’ve been struggling with Ed’s health, but he’s fine now, he’s doing great. But we were up and down before we even started recording that record [A Different Kind Of Truth]. It took us quite a while to get the record out of the factory, because of that. And then we cancelled a whole number of shows in the United States and Japan etc. to accommodate Ed. But he’s doing quite well now. So stay tuned.

Last question then Dave – well, it’s only the second or third of my planned questions but we’ll go with it – tell me about the dynamic of the band now, especially with a 20-year-old in the band [bassist Wolfgang Van Halen], compared to all of those years ago, onstage and off?

Back then the goals were a little bit different, but the energies were a little displaced, I think the band is more focused now, on all of the details of what we do. So things like the website, show up a little more colourfully, as opposed to hiring it out to other folks. As you’re learning and new moving along, you have to subdivide, you have to have somebody else do your video, you’re gonna have to have somebody else working on your stage design, because those are languages you don’t know. We speak those languages now. And the band is, if nothing else, a bit more thankful for the privilege of the job that we have, compared to a lot of the other jobs that we’ve had … I think the Van Halens have the same perspective.

Having someone who’s 20 years old in the band? Well you’re gonna have to keep up with us. The brothers and I are still skinny and full of victory. ‘Gonna Fly Now’ and all those great theme songs [laughs]. It’s pretty rare that somebody our age just signs up for the first stop time and can just keep up, but there’s a thrill of competition, the band ensemble competing with the world, then individually we still compete with each other, and it’s not really soured notes in the symphony. It’s volition, it’s sparks, and I think you’ll find that with any good team. And I find Wolfgang fits right in. Now that the three guys look the same, and I’m the one that’s different, I feel like Sammy Davis Jr. I’ve got a better sense of how he felt in the Rat Pack [laughs].

Van Halen will perform at Stone Festival at ANZ Stadium this Saturday, April 20, along with Aerosmith, Jimmy Barnes, The Living End and “supergroup” Kings Of Chaos.
