The thread for discussion about California's favorite band!

Basically, the Chili Peps have been my favorite band since I was a zygote. I grew up listening to them, and even though my musical tastes have changed drastically over the years, they still (and always will) have a special place in my heart.

RHCP have gotten a lot of shit for their....enthusiasm about a certain Golden State, and Anthony Kiedis' often nonsensical lyrics, among other things. While I won't deny that both criticisms hold a lot of water, there's still so much to love about this band.

Their high-energy live shows, complete understanding of each other musically, genre-defying sound, and John motherfucking Frusciante are just some of the reasons why I'm proud to call the Chili Peppers my favorite band.

By the Way, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and Mother's Milk are my top three favorites, with Californication close behind.

You're gonna have to wait a little bit; they're on a hiatus right now

Well it got love here. Everything was good until after BSSM. Then, in my opinion they went downhill. They did what every good band does, finds a formula and sticks to it. I hate to slam these guys but what the fuck was Stadium Arcadium all about. Personally, I think that a good 80% of the album sounded like Californication and By The Way B-sides.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan, used to be a huge fan and still go to shows cause that's where they shine. Granted they've had their problems in the past but that entire last album was made for straight-for-radio. What happened to the funk? I get that bands evolve but c'mon. I mean I find Keidis using a lot of the same lyrics/lyrical format and it just gets tired.I feel that the only thing that's fresh as far as they're concerned is John. Don't get me wrong, like I said, I'm a fan and will probably still go and see them when they come around again. I just wish they'd stick to touring. What they should have done was use BSSM as a template instead of a certain song on that album that they tried to re-create on every album since.

RHCP were my first American music and rock influence. My dad bought BSSM when it first came out and I was only a year old. Now I find Anthony's voice quite soothing and lulling. Seveteen years later I still love almost everything they come out with. I guess I was brainwashed into being a Chili Peppers fan...

so does this mean their next album will have emotion, and therefore might actually be good?

Loved their 90's stuff, a good amount of songs before then, but as far as I'm concerned. Californiacation was the end of their awesomeness(so far...). I'm calling that in a few decades the same kind of kids that wear AC/DC shits will wear RHCP shits, you know..the retro style band shirts.

I hear the RHCP since the 11 years, I love the guys, but now the NIN is my favorite group !!!!!!!!!!!!spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Same here! I will always adore RHCP but now, NIN is No1 for me.

I love RHCP. I've been listening to Californication all morning.
I used to be in the RHCP fan club. I love John's solo work too.
He's done 4 albums with RHCP and 9 or 10 by himself.
He's one of the best guitarists ever--along with Jack White.
(hence my screen name)

But I still like the RHCP !!!!!!!!!!

09/13/08 1:28 PM

its NIN 1st then Chili's for me too!

09/13/08 5:04 PM

I love RHCP too. I named my email address after 1 of their songs. But I missed their show. I hope they tour here again next year after the new stuff comes out. John & Flea always kick ass. Is it just me...or does Anthony's voice actually get better with each new album? I love ALL the songs on Stadium Arcadium. I can't say that for any other albums in my collection...including NIN. (Don't all gang up on me here...LOL)grinning smiley

Thank you smiling smiley

"Hump de Bump" sounds like " American Ghost Dance" from "Freaky Styley" I bought Stadium Arcadium and wasn't feeling it. I think they should play some of their earlier stuff on the road. I'm glad ive found someone else that likes the first record! "Buckle Down" is a great song.

11/01/08 10:00 AM

not a big fan but i still have them on my ipod. i only like their song 'give it all away'

11/09/08 8:48 PM

I know I'm in the minority, but I really like One Hot Minute the best. I prefer Frusciente over Navarro, personally, but I just like the style of One Hot Minute over anything else, just my opinion, though.

11/09/08 9:29 PM

One Hot Minute is great.
I'd take it over Californication and By the Way anyday.

I don't really like them..

But I always say that about bands and end up loving them a few months later XD

11/10/08 8:48 AM

Saw RHCP at Lollapalooza and the Virgin Festival in 2006 (yay) but missed my chance to see them in a non-festival setting.

Someday...

11/10/08 12:45 PM

I saw them live during their 2007 tour. It was alright, but they didn't play enough of their older songs. They mainly played songs from Californication, By the Way, Stadium Arcadium, and only 5 songs that were older. I wish they'ed realize that a lot people want to hear songs from earlier albums.

11/11/08 2:00 AM

Saw them in 2005 at the Richo in Coventry.

11/13/08 8:24 PM

for a band with a good enough catalogue, their setlists are boring.

11/14/08 12:24 AM

Yeah, they're good. Overplayed, but not bad. I dig the older material mostly.
