Wtf are you talking about, dude? Joy Division isn't hippie shit. If it weren't for fucking Joy Division NiN wouldn't exist. God, people, learn about music before shooting your mouth off.

You want overrated? How about Metallica or Motley Crue. Oooh, Motley Crue was one of the first bands out of LA to bring that god-awful sound to the mainstream. That's something to be happy about.

oh please, post punk / border line hippie, it's all the same to me
if it weren't for JD maybe NIN would maybe be a little different, why are we talking about nin like it's some indie rock band ?

if it wasn't for this NIN wouldn't exist:

Metallica is highly rated for the wrong thing anyway, for their "real heavy metal" period or some shit
Fuel all the way

Well no shit Skinny Puppy is relevant, but Joy Division was experimenting with synth and electronic music before most of the early industrial bands even existed.

Um, I wasn't talking about NiN like it was any kind of band, merely pointing out influences. Trent covered "Dead Souls", remember.

God I am so sick of people acting like NiN is only hard-driving industrial music. Ghosts I-IV ring a bell?

in the mainstream "rock world" i'd say metallica (c'mon, their latest relevant album is the black album... almost 20 years ago!) and u2 (sorry, but since achtung baby they released just a few decent songs)...

the indie scene is full of overrated artists... amanda palmer, ladytron, tv on the radio and many more...

08/17/09 2:35 AM

I don't think joy division was the first either. I don't hate them but I think they are a little overrated. I mean come on, they have books written about them and shit.. and there's more than one movie centered around joy division I'm sure

08/17/09 2:57 AM

AC/DC, Guns N' Roses and U2 weren't mentioned.

I'll probably get shit for that but I don't mind tongue sticking out smiley

Oh and motherfucking Coldplay.

08/17/09 3:07 AM

I don't get why coldplay are so popular..

just saw this.. LOL WTF pearl jam is a grunge band from the 90's and joy division is post-punk/80's music... pearl jam isn't overrated, no offence but they are bearly rated. nirvana on the other hand..

that comment was really ignorant.. :/

Ian Curtis is overrated mostly. It's almost as if they should call the band "Ian Curtis & the Joy Division".

I listen to Joy Division but not because Ian's lyrics are so touching, and his vocals are so "deep". It's because i love the instrumentals of the songs, i mean just listen to No love Lost, and you'll know exactly what i'm talking about. However, everybody seems to be going on about Ian Curtis when it comes to Joy Division.

I have an Unknown Pleasure shirt, and once i was in a cd shop, looking in the electronic/dance section, that for some reason is next to the metal section. And this guy comes next to me and shows me this death metal cd with the worst cover ever, and says "Excuse me, do you know this band?", i tell him no i do not, and why did he ask that. "Well because you listen to Joy Division, which means you musn't be a really happy guy in life".

No one has mentioned Nickelback? That's kind of strange especially given the name of this forum. All of their songs sound the same to me.

Mastodon? Now that is a lame attempt to think of some band that that has had some recent success to name drop. You can't even give a reason. FAIL. Mastodon desereve to be where they are at right now. It has been a slow, yet steady climb for them since they started with Remission and Call of the Mastodon. So I just don't see how that get's them the "overrated" title. Have you even heard any of thier albums? I can't think of a band that get's more creative in the story aspect as these guys do. Plus they are all extremely great at thier instruments.
Dude, don't get me started. I own 1 album of 'em, saw 'em live plenty of times..
They played at the club I worked for in their beginning days. smiling smiley

Why I think they're ovverrated.. Look the positions they play.. Opening for Tool, Slayer etc.

Comon ?!
That's exactly what they overrated for, their true metal period or something.
If it wasn't for St. Anger they would a better place in the minds of some annoying middle aged rock and roll purists, but for 95% of music fans they would have been a forgotten relic

edit. On topic Pink Floyd, AC/DC and KISS

Travis Barker. He's actually ranked among the top 10 greatest drummers, ahead of Danny Carey or in front of Josh Freese.
