while i've never, ever liked Rush, no band confounds me more than Van Halen- how i HATE them so. how they're as big as they are is completely beyond me; everything about them, from vocals and lyrics to the music, just comes off as completely chesseball. god, how i loathe it with a passion.

also overrated: Kings of Leon. nothing about that band strikes me as unusually praiseworthy.

^HAHA, even though I respectfully disagree with the Rush/Van Halen comments, it made me laugh.

I have to add Eminem in here. I love Hip Hop, but this douche really sucks. I've yet to hear one song that is even possible to dig. It's pretty sad that even with Dre's backing production skills, he sounds like shit. Call me crazy, but the Beastie Boys are much better when it comes to "white" rappers. I mean, when "My Name Is" came out, I was dumbfounded as to how that became such a big hit, since everything about it screams "ANNOYING!!!" from the shitty beat to Em's horrible delivery. I don't hate his game necessarily though, I just hate the playersmiling smiley And do you ever notice his accent changes up, one minute he's a full blown wigger, then next he's as white-suburban as can be...I don't know.

Try giving the first, self-titled Van Halen album another try. I can understand not liking the Hagar-era, but with David Lee Roth, Van Halen never wrote a bad song. One of the best, if not best American rock bands of all-time.

Never liked Rush either. Geddy Lee sounds like a gerbil on acid. I think most of their fans must be male. I've only known one girl who listened to Rush. She was actually a lesbian.

Reasons why I never bought Lady Gaga's music:

-I don't relate to any of her lyrics on a personal level.
-Her music is soulless & lacks feeling.
-I hate her name. "Gaga" is something a 2 year old would say.
-She dresses like a slut & walks around in her underwear.
-She's weird.
-She sings in a low register.
-She's unoriginal. Even her fans thinks she's a Madonna copycat.
-She's fake, not just her bleached hair but also her personality.
-She's rude when she's out in public & no one's watching. Then her true colors start to show.
-She's way too overexposed. Even if I liked her music, I would still be sick & tired of her.

I find their music to be generic, Stone Roses-esque, faceless, hipster Brit-pop bullshit. Hardly the saviors of rock that some people make them out to be.

It's from Queen's song "Radio Gaga". So, yeah, not really stupid.

Foo Fighters: I do respect Dave Grohl and think he's one hell of a musician, but goddamn does this band totally blow. I don't think I've ever heard one song that was remotely good! At least he's still a badass when he plays with everybody else though...

You didn't like Everlong? That was good. I liked it without knowing they wrote it.

Kanye West. I'm going to throw him on this list because I have listened to his stuff and heard quite a few people raving about him, and haven't been that impressed so far. Lyrical potential, yes, but not actualized talent to the point of him being in his current standing among music devotees.

Frankly, I disagree with some of the choices on this list, but there are none I'd say "Fuck you!" to. More like "Sorry..." I like Opeth, for example, but I understand the frustration. There just aren't that many bands who do progressive death metal better.

i think this should be retitled the "I Spend Way Too Much Time Caring What Other People Think" thread.

i'm not 13. of course i don't like justin beiber. i have enough sense to know that beiber is from a completely different planet basically from where i'm from and so is his audience of 12 yr old girls. but, really what's the point in banding up with other people saying "yeah, fuck beiber!!"

you come off just as childish as if you really liked him.

Instead of being a hipster and just mentionning sucessful artist as overrated because "dude they're so mainstream, cuz like people listen to them and shit", maybe you should realize that some of them are sucessful because they brought a truly original vision to music and deserve all the sucess they've had.

01/11/11 5:41 PM

I think maybe a distinction should be made between "artists that are overrated" and "artists I just don't personally care for." For example, I will acknowledge the enormous talent of Peter Gabriel, he's just not really my cup of tea, and I don't listen to him.

Phil Collins sucks donkey balls and he should be on the list.

01/11/11 10:17 PM

My definition of overrated is along the lines of "very popular, but I never 'got' or appreciated it (or if I did, I don't like it to the extent that other people do)."

Now there are artists I dislike, but that I do appreciate the fact that other people like them, I get their work, and there are artists that I either like or do get their work but still think get more credit than they deserve.

Any discussion about whether or not an artist/band is overrated can really only be approached from an individual perspective (well and still be an interesting conversation) because society as a whole has already (in most cases, obv there's artists out their that are underrated because they don't have a giant record label pushing their work down every available channel) assessed their standing (usually monetarily). I really don't feel that saying you think an artist is overrated is disrespectful at all. You're simply saying "personally I don't think they're as good as the hype."

@johnny_ripper, it's not a hipster attitude at all. I honestly don't get what's special about Wu-Tang Clan aside from the fact that other people like them (I've seen them live), or Simon and Garfunkle, or Springsteen, or Dylan (I really just don't get Americana/Folk Rock). Peter Gabriel actually has some songs I like, but I can't get into the rest of his music, and Sinatra I get, but still don't think his legacy deserves as much credit as it receives. Part of the point of my post was that just about any person in the thread could have started rattling off artists/bands non stop if they really wanted to.

Wtf are you talking about, dude? Joy Division isn't hippie shit. If it weren't for fucking Joy Division NiN wouldn't exist. God, people, learn about music before shooting your mouth off.

You want overrated? How about Metallica or Motley Crue. Oooh, Motley Crue was one of the first bands out of LA to bring that god-awful sound to the mainstream. That's something to be happy about.

oh please, post punk / border line hippie, it's all the same to me
if it weren't for JD maybe NIN would maybe be a little different, why are we talking about nin like it's some indie rock band ?

if it wasn't for this NIN wouldn't exist:

I respect your opinion on Radiohead. However, I disagree with you. Radiohead is one of the very few bands/artists that are saving music, not killing it.
Metallica is highly rated for the wrong thing anyway, for their "real heavy metal" period or some shit
Fuel all the way

and fuck radiohead

Oh and motherfucking Coldplay.

You wont get shit from me. I fucking hate all 4 of those bands. U2 was good a long time ago, but lately everything they do screams SELLOUT. ac/dc was never worth a shit, guns n' roses same thing (plus axl is a complete douche), and coldplay...who was the schmuck fuck that gave these idiots a record deal? If they were indie musicians, they would never make it.

01/18/11 3:57 PM

Guns N' Roses are the definition of overrated
and to be honest apart from beautiful day i don't know any other U2 songs

01/18/11 5:04 PM

If anything I would say GN'R were underrated. There are tons of great songs from the Use Your Illusion albums that were awesome but got buried, like Locomotive and Estranged has always been a favorite of mine.

Chinese Democracy is one of my favorite albums from the last ten years.

01/18/11 5:32 PM

i think GNR has gotten the right amount of attention. maybe a little under.

on a scale of the attention factor ..0 being the exact amount of attention that is due.

they get a -4

-4
-50......-30.......-10...|.0....10.......30......50 <- as indicated by the line on the grid.
