My definition of overrated is along the lines of "very popular, but I never 'got' or appreciated it (or if I did, I don't like it to the extent that other people do)."
Now there are artists I dislike, but that I do appreciate the fact that other people like them, I get their work, and there are artists that I either like or do get their work but still think get more credit than they deserve.
Any discussion about whether or not an artist/band is overrated can really only be approached from an individual perspective (well and still be an interesting conversation) because society as a whole has already (in most cases, obv there's artists out their that are underrated because they don't have a giant record label pushing their work down every available channel) assessed their standing (usually monetarily). I really don't feel that saying you think an artist is overrated is disrespectful at all. You're simply saying "personally I don't think they're as good as the hype."
@johnny_ripper, it's not a hipster attitude at all. I honestly don't get what's special about Wu-Tang Clan aside from the fact that other people like them (I've seen them live), or Simon and Garfunkle, or Springsteen, or Dylan (I really just don't get Americana/Folk Rock). Peter Gabriel actually has some songs I like, but I can't get into the rest of his music, and Sinatra I get, but still don't think his legacy deserves as much credit as it receives. Part of the point of my post was that just about any person in the thread could have started rattling off artists/bands non stop if they really wanted to.
