Attention electronic music lovers...

If you're into a mix of bass driven, dub, glitchy, electro, industrial music from an aspiring underground producer from New York. I self-released my first official album "Lines & Shapes" in 2009, which was a warehouse rave inspired, mix of four on the floor and breaks aimed at the dancefloors. At the end of 2011 I released its follow up "Children Of The Bomb," a darker, bassier, and more experimental album aimed at rumbling subwoofers and big dirty beats. I have made all of my work available for your listening pleasure as free downloads.

The fact is, the tracks on Lines & Shapes are actual songs with structure and changes, not just squibbles and squeaks over a 4/4 bass drum.

Lines & Shapes opens with “Oh No!”, an aggressive, almost industrial track recalling Lords of Acid or perhaps even My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. Things change on “Force,” an Arabesque drum & bass trope. From here the tracks continue to demand attention while never stooping to the typical boring phrases and clichés expectant of electronic dance music. Several tracks, “The Stars Above Us,” “No Turning Back” and “Another Cloudy Day” even take on a particularly Krautrockian tone, eschewing the beat in favor of form and feeling, like Kluster or something.

In a style as bland as modern dance music, it’s quite refreshing to hear a collection of songs with some thought behind them. EDM doesn’t need to be boring, it just tends to be that way. We need more Neorevs to teach us otherwise."

After a year and a half or so, Neorev, aka Long Island’s Michael Matteo, has returned with a powerhouse sophomore effort designed to give a swift kick to the genitals of electronic dance music.

Where Neorev’s first album, Lines & Shapes, was an engaging, though upbeat, effort aimed at the dance floor, Children of the Bomb is a much darker affair that focuses on the sinister sonics of dubstep. Here, Matteo excels; his fuzzy, wobbling bass attacks with an ominous vengeance that leaves the listener feeling a bit uneasy. This isn’t your pop radio dubstep, this is the sound of empty city streets at night, where rats run rampant and the silhouettes in the shadows are either muggers out to get you or twisted figments of your imagination. These are the dirty, grimy, sleazy sounds of cyberpunk incarnate.

Hot on the heels of Neorev’s powerful sophomore effort, Children of the Bomb, Michael Matteo releases an EP that features some of his strongest songs to date.

The title track comes from Children, a booming dubstep assault that takes no prisoners at it attacks in a frenzy of wobbles and insistent kick-snare beats. A series of remixes of “Brooklyn Stomp” are included on this EP, each having a different take on the powerhouse track, but it’s really Matteo’s other compositions that stand out. “Blue Lines” blends an italo disco groove with industrial sensibilities to create a track that is as danceable as it is aggressive. “Tantrum” is iron-fist-to-the-face dubstep and “Gangrenesta” adds glitch elements to the dubstep mix for a spastic take on the genre. “Hard Style” and “Basshead” pay homage to hip-hop, the former sounding like a Rick Rubin outtake, while the latter includes vocals by a rapper called Villain. The closing drum and bass onslaught of Lockdown‘s Rusko-esque remix of “Coming on Strong” ends everything on an extremely high note.

With this collection of tracks, Neorev proves to be a solid force in underground electronic music. His future looks extremely bright.

trust me, i know how difficult it is being broke, in the same boat myself
it's why i always make my stuff available for free download
i'm a music lover/collector/enthusiast myself... but hit a rough patch financially
where would i be without being able to find free music?
i know the struggles and would rather have my music be out there in the hands (lol, or computers) of the people who want it instead of no one hearing it because they couldn't afford it
where's the fun in that?

An amazing review of my last EP on The Big Takeover...

"Once again, Neorev returns with music so astonishingly excellent that one truly has to wonder why Michael Matteo isn’t one of the top electronic producers of the moment.

Like the “Brooklyn Stomp” EP, this is an album’s worth of remixes, reworkings and exclusive originals, though where “Brooklyn Stomp” was in the present moment with Children of the Bomb, “Let’s Get Down” points the way of the future for the electronic artist.

The opening three tracks are reworkings of Neorev tunes by Matteo himself. Here, the plodding industrial dubstep of the title track becomes a booming mid-paced dance track, while “Brooklyn Stomp” transforms into raging drum & bass. Even “Slaughterhouse,” from Neorev’s debut Lines & Shapes, breathes new life as sinister, shadow-laden dubstep.

The following three exclusive new tracks not only indicate Neorev’s direction, but are absolutely some of his best tracks to date. Where “Proper Funkage” recalls the psychotic pounding of Superstar DJ Keoki, “Boom!” takes orgasmic electronics to a whole new level, creating something between Kraftwerk and Leftfield. “Solstice” calms things down a bit with a mellow beat and a pulsing drone, like Stereolab doing music for an old Sega Genesis game, perhaps a Phantasy Star installment.

"Long Island’s Neorev, aka Michael Matteo, embodies the epitome of what electronic dance music should be, i.e., music first and foremost, not just endless, insidious thumping. The fact is, the tracks on Lines & Shapes are actual songs with structure and changes, not just squibbles and squeaks over a 4/4 bass drum.

Lines & Shapes opens with “Oh No!”, an aggressive, almost industrial track recalling Lords of Acid or perhaps even My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. Things change on “Force,” an Arabesque drum & bass trope. From here the tracks continue to demand attention while never stooping to the typical boring phrases and clichés expectant of electronic dance music. Several tracks, “The Stars Above Us,” “No Turning Back” and “Another Cloudy Day” even take on a particularly Krautrockian tone, eschewing the beat in favor of form and feeling, like Kluster or something.

In a style as bland as modern dance music, it’s quite refreshing to hear a collection of songs with some thought behind them. EDM doesn’t need to be boring, it just tends to be that way. We need more Neorevs to teach us otherwise."
