You have such a great start here with this. smiling smiley

The Evil that Men do.

My 8 years old son loves Batman. He has now reached the age when we can geek out together and I can share my love of comic books with him. We had been looking forward to see The Dark Knight Rises together for the past 6 months, ever since all those cool trailers started popping up online. This was going to be his introduction to Batman on the big screen, since he was too young to attend the previous chapters of the Christopher Nolan’s trilogy.

We counted the days leading up to the premiere, humming the theme score as we were playing with his (and mine!) action figures. We would have these plastic toys reenact the story beats from the trailers, putting Batman & Bane through epic fights and all. We were connecting on something awesome and exciting.

Then something changed. My Friday morning started with tales of horror coming from a movie theatre in the US. A deranged man took lives during the midnight screening of the film. I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep this hidden from my son, as it was all over the news, and in the conversations all around us. So the kids who were playing the day before had to have a grown-up conversation.

I had to explain, with words that he would understand, what had happened. But the trick is, how do you explain something like that? I tried my best to tell him that the bad guys were not just in movies. Sometimes, no heroes show up in time to prevent a tragedy. Sometimes, we don’t have the answers. And just like that, my son got a little older, and wiser about the world around him.

He had many questions, not about the gruesome details, but about what would happen to the killer. I told him that hopefully he would be locked up so he could never hurt anyone ever again, so people would be safe from him. I asked him if he still wanted to go see the film, that if was fine if he wanted to wait a few weeks, or even skip it entirely and wait until the Blu-ray disc came out. He wanted to go still, because he was looking forward to see his hero on the big screen with me.

So we went, and before the movie started, we took a little moment to remember those whose lives were cut shorts, just because they were trying to escape reality by following the adventures of a caped crusader for a few hours, just like we were.

We loved the film.

I love Batman.

I love my son.

Thank you ghostshot friend for stopping by again. I rarely give away that much of myself when I write here, I mean, my actual day to day life, but I'm glad I got to share a bit of it with you all. Your kind words are a great motivation to me, so I thank you.

We are indeed interconnected. Some of us have children, some don't. Some are trying to have children, some are wondering if they have any out there. Some of us are keeping alive the inner child, some are running away from a troubled childhood. Everything we come up with within these virtual walls create ripples, echoes. Like children playing at the pond...

And anew, I'm glad you picked up on the July 31st entry, because if was my barely disguised attempt at somewhat imitating your style ! winking smiley

Sometimes we hit alittle to close to home. For another to see that in ones writing and realize that the writer is sharing something from within that is so close it hurts. That is a true writing...I saw your son as you TRIED to tell him, seriously I don't know how you did it but it had to be done. Talk about raw...I'm glad that you shared.

It wasn't easy... Usually words come to me rather easily. But on that day, they didn't. But this was one of the most intense conversation I ever had, one that was important, as I had the impression that whatever I was going to say, my son would most likely remember it for a long time... Like you say, had to be done.
