Since I am in withdrawal, this looks like a good and appropriate place to share some thoughts about the show. So, binksr, Free, Sharona, Peace, and other party room access compatriots, this is for you...
Made it to LA at 9:25 Thursday morning no problem and met up with my party who had been in line since 7:30 pm on Wednesday night. Special wristbands were a red and white checked pattern, and we were up near the front so we also got a wristband to enter the small pit area. Got in and passed up pit (which would have been awesome, it was pretty small) to stand close to the stage but higher up and with a short wall to lean on.
Crowd went nuts when Ron Jeremy, and then later, Penn J. appeared in the balcony (people were cheering, waving, lining up for autographs, chanting their name). Also, yes, Penn was in the balc, not on the floor. I did not see No Doubt Tony, skateboarder Tony, Veronica DLC, the guy from "The Hurt Locker", or David Bowie. I actually don't think Bowie was there, I doubted it even when the rumors started flying around that he was there at about 9 pm. There had been talk about Dave Grohl showing up to play along for a few songs. I wish that would have happened. Sunspots anyone? IO Echo was not a bad opener, and they were very quick, but I would have preferred Mew again.
Trent sounded great for being on the mend and he wisely took a lot of drink breaks. I think he talked more in Vegas at the final LITS show than he did at Wiltern, but when they were doing TDTWWA he kept interrupting the song to introduce or thank someone he had forgotten, that was cute. Getting Me I'm Not with Atticus was an absolute treat. Wish was pure mayhem thanks to DEP, do check out the video if you haven't yet. You saw the setlist, it was longer than Fonda but I think not as edgy or surprising. Just Like You Imagined and In This Twilight were special of course, as was the sheer length of the show. When the show ended, many of us just sort of stood there for a while silent and sort-of numb - what else could you do? You didn't want to leave the room.
Tour shirts (not reprinted with corrected dates) were red, the only venue that got buttons was Palladium. Each show's wristband had a different NIN font on it, from the various albums, visually pretty sweet. The Wiltern is a pretty place, and I thought the sound was great. I was very close and didn't have to wear earplugs. After Chicago my ears rung for days, not the case this time. Justin and Robin came out a few hours after the show for fans, Trent was spotted with Q leaving the venue in a Prius with a driver.
I was surprised that the song that really got me teary-eyed was Atmosphere. We did the VIP package in Noblesville back in May, I remember crying several times because at that point it was my last NIN show. I've been lucky enough to see three more after that night. You would not BELIEVE how many people at the Wiltern show had also seen the other LA gigs AS WELL AS New York and Chicago. One couple from Mass said they had been home one night in the past 21 days.
This was my 21st show since 1994. Like all of you, I'm really going to miss them. I've come to appreciate Robin so much in the past year (and if you click on my avatar, you'll see me to his right). I hope he does something cool next. Me, I'll be here in the detox room for a while. Maybe when we get a dvd we should set up viewing parties or something just to reunite.
* Sigh *
