Sharing scores of remixes

I've created a score for my Downward Spiral remix, "The Glassward Spiral", and would like to post it up for anyone to use for free.

I know this is in line with the spirit of the NIN remix site, but there isn't any facility there to do this just now.

Does anyone know what the legal position is for sharing the scores for remixes - is it the same as for the remixes themselves, i.e. it's fine as long as it's not-for-profit? If it is, would there be some way of putting pdf scores up on the remix site alongside the remixes, or can they be put up on another site to share them with the world?

If you would like to share a homemade score of your own remix not-for-profit, I can't think of a reason why it would be a problem. If you were sharing copies of a published book or sheet music of the original song, that would present a problem.

There is no place on the remix site to upload files other than mp3's, but you could provide links to downloads within the description of a remix, the comments of a remix, or created a thread in the 'your music' forum here: [forum.nin.com].

After sharing my score with the world, someone has now asked to publish it, and I can't see anything on the remix site about what the copyright position is with a score of a remix.

In my specific case, I significantly altered the theme and the rest is my own work. Do I own it completely, or do I have to seek permission? And if I have to seek permission to publish, who do I approach? Is Trent the best person to ask?

If you are using ANYTHING made by NIN or TR+AR, you do not own it, and cannot sell it without license. To simply release it, as long as you correctly attribute the Creative Commons license clearly, that is fine, but if you want profit, you need to contact [www.rebelwaltz.com]

And since just The Slip and Ghosts I-IV is published under a Creative Commons licence it's a bad idea to use such licence for most of the works based on NIN/TR's catalogue, no matter if for free or for profit. One must not use CC licences if one uses "traditional" copyrighted material without express and explicit permission of the copyright holder (hello Interscope/Universal!). And no, the stuff on remix.nin.com is NOT CC licenced (besides TS & Ghosts), it's just free to use and share based on an agreement between Trent and the label - huge difference.

More information: CC - Make sure you have the rights.

I'd say: What the hell! Let's load it up! It's only a remix for a fan to fan basis. No harm done. Give it a try. I'm curious
