NIN app for Android

05/04/09 5:49 PM

Okay, I know there are a few of us out there, and I would personally like to see the NIN app come to the Android Market. There should not be too much work involved in porting the app from the iPhone OS to the Android OS, since both use similar codes for writing apps, with the largest difference coming from their compilers (a process the SDKs do for both phones).
Basically, please post if you own a G1 or are planning on buying an Android phone this summer and would like to also have a chance to participate in the mobile NIN community.

P.S. A plus to bringing the NIN app to Android is the fact that Google has rather lax policies on what the apps can or cannot do. I would be surprised if they got all pissy because you could stream the song "The Downward Spiral" onto your phone!

Edit: Okay, I see that Trent as acknowledged Android's existence in the past (please don't rain fire down upon me!), but I would still like to see how many members would be interested in this.

Dear God I hope not.

I wholeheartedly endorse this opinion.

Idea.

In the recent past when everyone bitched about the digg dialog - tr proposed everyone self organize and did a web cam interview thing. Basically a fine, do it yourself.

Well - and I'm sure there are hacking and security concerns to this - how about opening up an API to developers who are NiN fans so they can make a version of the app for whatever device they wish.

Yes, I know any app can just pull the html page down as is but access to features like, well, access could be enabled through releasing the API.

Maybe there is a way to constrain the location feature use only on devices that have some kind of 'trusted location device' so cheesers can't mess up the experience for everyone by saying omg im so theres.

Just a thought, lots of (hopefully work-throughable) problems with this, but given recent history, maybe there is precedent.

edit: totally fixed stupid spelling.

Totally wholeheartedly agree with this. In fact, I replied to Trent on Twitter just yesterday saying that they need to get on the case and put the app out in the Android market.

The G1 is KILLING the competition at least here in the UK. All the creative types I know in media and entertainment have switched to Android. All the tech mags are singing its praises. Android 1.5 OS is EASILY the best mobile OS, it's a million miles ahead of everything else. I know people who did use iPhones and have made the jump, and I know a lot of people who considered getting iPhones and are now getting an Android device instead.

And now, with the second Android phone (HTC Magic) in stores, there's even more people switching, and more of these people are switching from the iPhone, since the Magic is also touchscreen only, whereas the G1 has a physical keyboard.

Well, to clarify my point - I simply want them to release the libraries necessary for others to build it... and I also acknowledge the potential technical challenges...

Depending on what device you have, you might be able to install android on it.

Best news I've heard in a while, I just purchased my G1 today and I love it, all I need now is a good ol' NIN app and I'll be happy grinning smiley

Speaking as someone who has had two iPhones (original model and the 3G) and then switched over to the G1, I'm glad to see it is picking up some recognition. The only problem is that here in the US the only decent Android phones are coming out for T-Mobile, a company not a whole lot of people use (sorry if some people here do use it, but honestly I kinda think it sucks). The thing that really needs to get Android going is if AT&T starts supporting it, but I've seen the phones that AT&T is releasing... they're not pretty. My friend made a very good observation, though, and that is that AT&T is not likely to release a phone that's better than the iPhone. They won't want to bite the hand that feeds them...

Get that app out!

06/29/09 12:19 PM

my android phone is ready and eagerly waiting for the nin:access porting grinning smiley

I raise my hand with my G1 win it, but don't see the app coming for my shows coming week grinning smiley And otherwise it would be awesome...

I have a 'jesusphone' but I am a big fan of the Android mobile-OS and would love to see the NIN-app on it.

09/27/09 7:37 AM

Looking forward to this on my Android app store

10/11/09 2:53 PM

getting my android phone this week, any word on release date for the app?

10/14/09 7:28 PM

i'm hoping to get an android ph by the end of the year. so i'm interested in this app too. but i figure that it was mostly used for the tour, and now that they've stopped touring... are they still planning on releasing it?

11/01/09 10:11 AM

I had a Black Berry before this and was hoping to see it on that before the final tour dates last summer. No such luck. Now I have the Sprint Hero (great phone) and want it for Android. Let's go Trent/Rob whoever needs to get this out there. There are a bunch of new Android devices coming (Moment on Sprint, Droid on Verizon...more next year I hear).

Since i'm probably getting the Motorola DROID within the next couple of weeks, i vote for an app for version 2.0 smiling smiley

I can live with that. Hero is supposed to be getting an upgrade. HTC is working on 2.0 with their Sense UI.

they should make a nin app for palm pre also

11/03/09 9:31 AM

Trent said no WinMo or WebOS plans from what I recall. With the number of Android phones coming they really should get this out.
