I uploaded a picture that is below 100x100 but in the forum it seems to look resized and not very clear. Did I do something wrong - is there a way to fix this? The original picture is massive so I don't think it's a problem in that respect.

EDIT: Immediately after posting this I realised my stupidity - making the picture higher quality fixes it because it was getting stretched because it wasn't large enough. smiling smiley

I am the biggest noob here, but how do I upload a photo. (And any techno language you use, like .GIF file or something, assume I don't know what it is, because I usually don't.)

Thanks!

You uploaded a bitmap image, not a GIF or JPG file.

You need to convert your BMP file using a graphics program into a GIF or JPEG file, then upload it again.

Good luck.

Please read my post here (see above). To reiterate, you need to use a graphics program such as Adobe Photoshop or any other alternative to convert it, save it and then upload it to your profile.

(edited: to add the appendum w/ more details)

(This is where the noobness kicks in)

Umm, how do I convert the file?

If you're on windows and have office, you should have a program called "paint" open your .bmp in it then chose "save as" and chose .jpg or .gif.
There is a very cool open source program called "GIMP", but it might collide with your noobness (i love this word smiling smiley ).
You could also use an online converter: [media-convert.com]
Please keep in mind that the avatar size is 100x100 pix.

Just in case nothing works out for you and your pic can wait until tomorrow, drop me a pm and i'll make it for you winking smiley

Yesterday I went to my sister's house and I logged in with her computer and changed the avatar... and guess what? It worked.

When I arrived home I removed firefox and installed it again. Then I changed the avatar one more time and it worked too.

I don't know what exactly is, but the problem it's in our computers, folks.
So if you can access your account on another computer, try it.

Hope it helps you. winking smiley

thumbs up @ iheartchocolate smiling smiley

Maybe you guys should just use another browser on your Computer, IE instead of FF (or the other way round) and try to change your avatar pics.
Please post in this thread, if it worked out.

If you upload an animated gif, it will show up animated next to your posts in the threads, but not on your profile page. I know that it still says that animated GIF's are not supported, but they work smiling smiley

then there must be something wrong with mine. cause my current avatar is the one that is animated. Even saving it on my computer I cant see the animation unless i open it in my internet browser. Is there a certain way it needs to be saved onto my computer to work?? I figured as long as I saved it as .gif it would be alright.

Sorry for all the noob questions. grinning smiley

No prob, can you post the animated avatar here in the thread ?
You don't have to quote the posts, just the pic, please smiling smiley

*edit*
1. Maybe your computer at work doesn't open it in a program that supports animated GIF's, like Adobe ImageReady for example. If you open an anumated GIF in Photoshop, it only shows you one frame and not the full animation.

2. Maybe you have the same issue with your avatar pic not updating, like the members above. Please try to log ib from another browser then the one you usually use, if you're sure that the GIF you want to upload is really animated and then try to upload it from the other Browser.

3. If you don't know, how to post a picture in the thread: You have to upload it on a picturehost, like photobucket or Flickr and then post the url here in image tags [img]yourpictureurl[/img]

Okay, just in the last few days, I have been trying to update my avatar and it is not updating in the fourms. I have tried three different computers and different internet browsers. Am I just fucked and have to deal, or is someone fixing the problem?

Thanks.

01/16/09 12:46 AM

My avatar isn't showing up in the forum but it shows up on my profile. I've tried various pictures and there is no change.

FYI re: quick fix if your new avatar isn't loading

Some people have been experiencing problems uploading their new avatars to the nin dot com forums.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3257/3200042660_81e1e8f77d_o.jpg

Found out a quick 'work around' for this.

What you need to do is upload 3 images all at once in your "upload photos" box.

If you have new banners and profile photos, re-upload them to NIN.COM at exactly the same time, or if you don't want to upload new ones, right-click save the existing ones you already have to your hard drive and re-upload them.

Reiterating that in order for this to work, you must upload 3 images at the same time.

Once you have all 3 fields filled in, click the [UPLOAD] button.

If you don't want a banner or a profile photo at this moment, and want to leave it alone, you can save the following link (see below) to your hard drive, and upload this tiny image as a 'placeholder'. It won't show up in your profile page, but at least you are uploading something to get your new avatar to work.

'invisible' 2 pixel by 2 pixel 'placeholder' image (right-mouse click the link to save the image to your hard drive)

If I seem unclear, this method doesn't work for you at all, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me. Thanks.

Hey there. (I did shoot you a PM too, but just in case....)

I did what you instructed, and it still didn't work. Is there any other ideas on what I can do to fix the avatar issue?

Thanks much for the help.

I'm having similar problems as the people who are having avatar problems, except it's my profile picture I can't change. I tried the above said just for the hell of it, and I can't change the picture.
