I would love to post photos in various forums (i.e., show off your pet, tatoos, etc) but I'm stupid and can't figure out how. Please help???

Hey LBoogie.
You need a host for your pictures.
www.photobucket.com is great for a free account and it automatically generates image urls of your uploaded photos for you.
You could also use www.imageshack.us, but their url's are a bit tricky sometimes.

If you want to direct-link a picture from a website, you have to set it in these: - but you have to be careful, some sites don't want people to directlink and the pictures turn into porn and such when they're hotlinked winking smiley

It's easier to open a free Flickr account. If it's good enough for Trent, it's good enough for you.

Since we're on the subject of photos....

I've seen banner and profile pictures [mine] that are squished or distorted.

The banner option gives a 1000 x 80 size but tinypic doesn't offer that, nor the 250 x 200 profile size. How do I post a clear, sharp image for these two photo options.

Profile and banner pics are stored on NIN's servers.

Sonus: you need to use an image editing program to make your picture the appropriate dimensions.

If you don't have Photoshop, there are many free programs that you can use. Picasa, Irfanview, I think Photoshop Online, also. For not-free programs, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, PaintShop Pro, and others.

I think what bat21 meant was that profile and banner pics are stored on NIN servers; you don't link to them from a host like Photobucket. (As opposed to when you post a picture in a thread, which you DO need to link from some outside host.)

Photobucket does offer some resizing tools but I don't think you can fine-tune them to be whatever you want, e.g., 250x200 or 1000x80.

If you are desperate and cannot do this yourself, send me your pictures and I'll do it for you in Photoshop. Be aware that they have to be BIGGER than you want, not smaller. Upsizing will likely screw them up; downsizing is a lot easier. They also need to be the same proportions or they'll have to be cropped. Meaning, if you have a picture that is 1250x700, it is impossible to resize it to 1000x80 and have it look the same. You have to crop out the part you want to make into the banner at a hundred-to-eight ratio (which is equivalent to 1000x80 pixels) and resize that.

Any of this make sense?

Thanks for the kind offer, Maryelle, truly. If I expand my computer horizons I could have more fun all around. It seems so involved but I guess it's not. Unknown territory, my head doesn't wrap around this stuff easily. eye rolling smiley

Just email me if you want me to do it, it's no prob at all.

But yeah it's fun to do this stuff yourself. You can learn Photoshop if you put your mind to it. And then you get addicted and would die without it. smiling smiley

Confession: Sometimes I double-over with laughter when I look at the Photoshop thread. I mean, c'mon! The people in there are Riot Central.

Lolz, for various reasons I don't post in that thread. Although it's hilarious and I've laughed to the point where I had to go in the bathroom because people were staring.

But if you were to need ... help ... on a picture for that thread, and you wanted to post it under your name and leave me completely out of it, I would hypothetically consider it.

10/07/08 10:11 AM

kewl!

I almost feel badly for lutzing at some of the pics, if it was me I WOULD DIE. Reznor has a great sense of humor, his name is also being mauled in Tanner's thread to which I've contributed. lol That's my way of 'photoshopping'.

If you go to this site [www.lunapic.com] they have a free resizer (Under Edit click "resize" and just type in the dimensions you want it resized to.) They also have some cool image effects/animators there!

Camera-phone pix? What's the best way to send them to my profile, make an avatar, or post to a forum from my phone?

With flickr: If you set up a flickr account (which you can use with nin.com), flickr will actually give you an e-mail address that lets you e-mail photos directly from your phone to your flickr account. You can even add tags (this will let you add your images to nin.com photo galleries if you have the appropriate tags ahead of time).

Without flickr or a similar service: As for direct use at nin.com, I think you'll have to copy your images from your phone to your computer to upload for use as an avatar or in a forum.

How do you re-size a pic once you have embedded the image link? My pics from photobucket tend to be huge. If I use Flickr will the pics post smaller?

T.IA

11/25/08 6:01 AM

You have to resize them before you embed them. You can choose different sizes in Flickr. In Photobucket you have to resize it in the program, which will permanently alter the size of the uploaded picture; or do it in another program before uploading.

Thank you very much for posting this text. It is really helpful. As a translator, I solely concentrate on writing and I have been neglecting images/visuals quite a lot. I want to explore software like Photoshop. I think I could have a lot of fun... In the meantime, I will fix up my avatar/photo with Picasa. Thanks again!
