Today I thought of something that would work as a compromise, but it's hard to believe anyone gives a shit, so I won't bother saying anything.
Today, I wallow.
I'd like to hear it
Copypasted essay from blog...
Please bear with me, I've given this a lot of thought.
I will take that assignment. (Although I am boycotting NIN until conditions improve, please treat this as an answer coming from a fan. Hopefully I will be again.)
Chatrooms:
+ They look pretty. Like the pm chats, but it would be better if you could invite more than one person into a separate bit so you don't have to watch gorping comments filling up your whole screen).
- Too fast, though. You end up missing a lot of stuff. The " and @ buttons are switched round (yes, I know...) Like people here have said, conversation's usually pretty shallow. That fast scrolling screen's not condusive to a conversation. It fucks with Nelly's epilepsy, therefore other peoples' as well. You always feel like you're being watched (because you are).
Forums:
+ Great for finding everything NIN related without having to wade through the internet. Forum organisation good in that way. Lots of knowledgable ETS geeks with info are posting. Looks pretty. Kind of.
- Some moderators have been too heavy handed. Whole place has a bit of a stuck up, unwelcoming attitude. Locking of threads without original posters' consents: either let it go, or move it if the place is getting disorganised. The photoblog turns into an ass kissing convention and is therefore, pretty uninteresting. No "ultimate community" seen from where I'm standing (although I am standing pretty far away.) If you have that excellent firefox add-on that puts your tabs in a tree at the side of your window, you need to expand the page to full screen as the page doesn't shrink to fit the window.
Blog:
+ Obviously... perfect free speech here. No babysitting by moderators. The community develops and gets stronger because we deal with racists/sexists/fucktards/etc ourselves rather than brushing those problems under the rug. A significant amount of healthy and heated debate on pretty much everything. Gig nights were great, you could sort of watch the gig online but have other conversations at the same time. All tangents in conversation were permissible, and encouraged. People talked about anything and everything here. No need to go wading through the forums. People have formed genuine bonds in this place.
- We had plenty trolls which could be offputting for newbies. If you want NIN info, you either need to wade through comments, or ask someone. Not so good if you don't know the place (see previous comment...). The bi-racial baby anon. Profile impersonator/s (regulars can tell the difference, but not everyone can.)
Suggestion... if there were a completely unmoderated forum ie this or something like it (although I personally think this comment page is better than the forum, as it holds more comments per page) where no rules apply and the community can deal with itself would give people a choice of whether they want the tangential conversation, free speech, and right to fight and fend for themselves; or the structure, safety and organisation of the forum. Or both.
And: mods should have some responsibilities with their rights i.e. if they pm someone, that info should be allowed to be made public by the person receiving it. People shouldn't be insulted by being told they can't decide what's fair and goes against the forum rules, and what doesn't. The whole thing should be more open and transparent. I'm not going after all mods per se, I've only had run-ins with a few of them, but they should be held as accountable for their actions as everyone else is.
Done. *goes to lie down again*
