Furry, officially known as Furry Fandom, is the appreciation of anthropomorphic animals (animals possessing human characteristics and anatomy). This appreciation is widespread; funny animal comics, cartoons, movies, and most popular culture. There's also an appreciation for the ancient forms of anthro animals, as found in Egyptian and other cultures.
Here's a breakdown, as there are several facets of who and what a Furry can be.
1. Someone who appreciates animal comics and cartoons.
2. Someone who appreciates animal mascots, costuming, and puppetry. They can be found costuming (a.k.a. Fursuiting) at events and conventions. Others make their own animal puppets and put on shows for people.
3. Someone who actually creates anthro animal-centric artwork.
4 Someone who also feels a spiritual connection to animals, and identifies with them, in terms of their closeness to nature and care for one another.
Now, there are Furries who identify with only one of these facets, and there are others, like myself, who identify with more than one of these facets. We do often create our own Furry characters, or "Fursonas," that we identify each other with. As with the
"dry humping," yes, there is a sexual side to Furry, for Furries are people, and people have sex with each other. Trust me, as a member of Furry for four years, the sensationalism you might see in the mass media (read: CSI and MTV) about Furries is not the real story. Sex sells, so that's what they run with, but believe me, their accusations are unfounded and do not speak for us at all.
All you really need to know about Furry is we're all caring, average, everyday people who love to have fun.
