^ Most of the time it's good, but we live right on Streatham high road, which as you can imagine means constant noise! The area itself is actually pretty decent and I've no complaints about it, it's just my god, the weekends...there are two clubs just up the road from us so it sometimes gets ridiculous at 2am on a Saturday. Once we move to somewhere in a quieter street these problems will cease to exist! cool smiley

Oh yeah, my uncle lives in Streatham, right by the common road which I suppose isn't too bad, but whenever I need to go there I have to pass right through the centre, which always struck me as super cramped. A lot of estate agents I spoke to said that I could only afford to live there (I was looking in Clapham/Brixton), saying that it had "great transport links" but I don't really count two slow trains as being that.

Anyway, yeah, I suppose Streatham is a bit more SARF LAHNDAHN than South London.

You're right, the trains are crap, however it's only 5 mins from Brixton tube (and Brixton Academy, I'll miss that when I move!). I've only lived here for 4 years and I'd say most of Streatham is ok, I'd just avoid living directly on the high road. We're moving to Hampshire in late October though which is going to come as a slight shock...

Also - *waves to all the other Brits*

08/18/08 9:15 AM

That's the thing I found when I moved to Surrey. All of a sudden, I couldn't just nip on the number 14 bus to get anywhere!!

Eek!!

I now have to get the overland train in, or drive to Wimbledon Common and park there so I can get the Tube from Wimbledon.

That said, I'm glad to be out of London. My sanity is glad too.

damn it, i HATE london!!!
i live over on the east side, not too far from east ham - what a hole!

evidence a) docklands light railway - service cut back so now it terminates at canning town...

evidence b) jubilee line - constant works at weekends means no service from canning town...

evidence c) if west ham are playing at home, ALL the roads are choked...

evidence d) come evening rush-hour, my road is used as an attempt to avoid the rush-hour, meaning the whole road is choked...

evidence e) can't think of one - am too tired from ranting about how shit my part of london is!

good bog in devon, i need a tea!

Oh dear, all this moaning about London. I don't live there but I do travel there for work very often. However, on days when I'm not there, I'm in my office, which is out in the countryside. Lovely and calming. cool smiley

mind you, when i did live in the country, it used to drive me nuts with nothing to do! confused smiley

currently working towards a two-year plan - wifey just finished her course, starts working (for money, not course credit!) soon, so once she's got some experience, we'll be fucking off out of the country!!!

When I first moved to London, I lived in Leyton for two years and then Beckton for one.

No disrespect to anyone who likes that part of the world, but that's three years of absolutely hating living there!!

It's grey, grey, grey, grey, grey with a large dollop of dirty grey thrown in for good measure. Urgh... Me? I like to see trees and squirrels and ickle bitty critters (as they attempt to crawl into y'sandwich...) so as much as I grumble about having lived in Fulham, Leyton and Beckton (for me) were horrible!!!

Eek!!

Your two-year plan sounds like a GOOD one!!

funnily enough, before I moved here, I was in fulham too!!!

Bracken Close, not that far from ASDA... I was lodging for a year with a friend and his wife while I sorted out my fledgling freelancing self.

As for Fulham, wasn't it 'fun' when either Chelsea or Fulham FC played at home? Ye gods... It was best to either go out and STAY out or never leave home in the first place!!!

'tis the same here now... everytime west ham play at home, ALL the main roads become choked with grunting sweaty fat blokes (no offence to any hammers fans in here! grinning smiley), to the point that i'd rather watch back-to-back episodes of x-factor or something!!!

still the only upside to it was that they played this weekend, the roads were solid, so there's me sitting on a bus, pissed off, when BANG!!! nice little car-smash right next to my window!! some tool forgot what side of the road he was supposed to be on, & tried to take on a uch bigger car!!! grinning smiley
(fortunately no-one was hurt, unless you count the idiot's pride...)

*sups tea* reading all the pros/cons to living in London. Handy for anyone considering of moving there - not that I am.

I'll stick to where I am for the mo. Tis compact, on the coast, countryside not 10 mins drive away etc and so on.

Course tis not perfect and NIN have never played here but well, it'll do for the time being.

PS - I can see B13's avatar now

Leyton is pretty awful. I live quite close to there but no offense taken because I agree!

I think there are more pros for me. I enjoy living here most of the time but I guess it depends whereabouts you are. I'm a North of the river and South London just seems a bit foreign and weird to me, ha.

Casbah, haven't talked to you for ages.

lolz, sorry for hijacking the consulate wraith!! have a pickle! grinning smiley

@ ohvienna: i know exactly what you mean about the north/south london thing - I'm starting a new job in a south london school next month, am dreading it! still, the money & promotion (will be Head of Department!) is too good to refuse...

still, i suppose at least there's good clubs in london, not to mention a fairly good selection of gigs!
Have got antichrist next month, & voltaire & another antichrist (same night!) in october - am getting old, can't do too many late nights! grinning smiley

btw, where's the biscuits?

08/18/08 12:15 PM

Yeah, East London is a bloody hole. My mum lived there in the 70s (Leyton), and said it used to be quite nice. It's full of shitty takeaways and convenience shops now, which is reflected in the low low price of housing! Probably the only place I'd consider living is Shoreditch, but the transport is a bit pants in those parts.

I have no idea why all these "city crash pads" are being advertised for docklands - it must be a right ghost town if you don't work for HSBC!

And yeah, anywhere north of camden in London may as well be a foreign country! I think when I get middle aged I may like West London - ealing or something, but South London's always been a pull for me. Islington would be nice though...

...need monies. If I had monies, I'd move Australia closer, and mash Leeds together with London.

What do we all think of that news story where they wanted to take people from Sunderland and Liverpool and move them down to Oxford and London!

08/18/08 12:21 PM

ickle- i heard about that story, & thought to myself: what a load of bollocks!
apart from the economic burden it'd put on london (ask my wife, she has a hell of a job dealing with all the babies being squeezed out round here already...) theres a small matter of asking do people actually want to move down here?!?

like i said before, i want to leave!!! give me a couple of years, and i'll hopefully be somewhere hot & sunny! & earning a shitload more than I am now, & getting a tad more respect for my job! smiling smiley

Right where I am! Haha. I live in Walthamstow. It's not too bad, i'm sort of tucked away next to Chingford/Highams Park and near a bit of forest. As a town in general though it is pretty shitty but I never feel overly ~unsafe~ where I live.

I'm with you on wanting to live in Islington.

I haven't heard the news story but it sounds like a load of rubbish. Surely it should be a choice for the people who live up there?

The report basically said, redeveloping places like Hull, Liverpool, Manchester etc isn't working. The money should be spent building up areas like Oxford so that northerners who wish to 'develop' can move down from the north and live in civilized houses rather than the mud huts we currently live in....something a long those lines

08/18/08 2:12 PM

^^ hahahahahaha!!!

& it doesn't taste quite the same when ejected from the nostrils...

Yr kidding? OMG... that's hysterical. Which snotty nosed kid/politician etc (delete as appropriate) came up with that one?

08/18/08 2:37 PM

lolz, it was the Conservative's fave think tank, Policy Exchange, (article here) who came up with this marvelous idea...
admittedly, Cameron did try to distance himself from the report, but still makes you laugh

I've brought some Yorkshire tea and buns...fondant fancy anyone?
