Ever looked into The Boss DR-770? A bit pricey, but it received rave reviews...

Korg EMX-1. Otherwise known as the blue Electribe. It's a good piece of kit. The samples are a little dated though.

If you have experience with step programming and you really want to get your hands dirty, check out the Yamaha RS7000. Lots of power, lots of menu diving.

If your willing to make an investment on something that will cost more than most devices on the market, go with the Akai MPC range. It will last you years. And is upgradeable (as far as sounds go). Imagine going around the house and recording various items and being able to use them in many creative ways. You could even borrow, rent, buy and return various "drum machines" and sample them.

Roland 909, they're kind of hard to come by nowadays though...
