So, I need a new pair of headphones...

My old pair, that actually lasted quite some time, just recently cut out in the right side so I'm looking to buy a new one. I just need something portable, relatively comfortable (I prefer on ear to over ear and I hate buds) and cheap (100 bucks, max) but obviously within that range I want something with the best sound quality possible.

So far on my list of possible choices are the Koss PortaPro and some variant of the Sennheiser PX 100, there seem to be a few. So, any feedback on my current choices, or, any suggestions?

Oh, and even though I listed my preferences, feel free to suggest something outside of those specifications. I really just want a good pair of portable headphones.

Alot of choices, but one i can tell you from experience to avoid I.M.O,

Koss - UR55

They sound alright; not complaining in that department, but the most uncomfortable pair I have ever owned, leaves my ears red. The foam surround gives in after they have been on for a bit and my ears rest right on the speaker plastics,

Skullcandy's... REAL good quality haedphones, they're decently priced if you find them in the right place

I like my bose in-ears .. the black and white ones. Excellent sound, the buds lay in your ear and are not jammed in .. which I like. $90, sometimes on sale for $80.

My first pair went out in about 3 years, one of the sides went out .. they replaced for $50.

I was looking at these for a spell, but never picked them up yet; now I know some come with the " bass boost " guessing a battery amplification in the line?

My concern was if I was using a bass amplificating headphone, it would throw off my mixing and lead to under levels of bass when the track was played in another speaker source,

Have you messed around with these on recording levels without any issues?

In my experience, SkullCandy headphones have been absolute garbage. They never lasted longer than 3 months, the sound quality was horrible in my opinion, and they're not even as aesthetically pleasing or cool looking as people think they are. But, to recommend a pair or two of headphones, I would go with the Stanton DJ Pro 3000 or the Sony MDR-XB500. A bit on the large side, the two of them, but the sound quality on those is amazing.

i'm a poor boy so skullcandy's are amazing to my ears grinning smiley i can't afford anything good anyway, after using ten dollar headphones for several years, EVERYTHING sounds better lol

SkullCandy are absolute garbage. Overly loud, tinny, and have a horrible dynamic range. They perpetuate everything that has gone downhill about audio quality in the digital era: Compression, loudness, and a total lack of dynamic range. I researched the shit out of earbuds under $50 and opted for Denon AH-C360 Advanced In Ear Headphones. Beautiful sounding, a nice high end with no tinniness even out of the box, great mid range, warm, full bottom end, and great noise canceling for an earbud... Couldn't be happier!

I have an expensive pair or Grado Prestige Series SR325is Headphone for serious listening on the home stereo, absolutely fucking amazing!

As a whole, we've forgotten how to listen to music. I try to encourage people to train their ears, set your equalizers to flat and use little or no bass and treble enhancement. Digital presets and equalizers should only be used minimally to correct flawed recordings (which are rare) or to balance flawed equipment. Misusing these things as volume boosters is just silly, distorting the music from the way it was intended to be heard. If you want it loud, use the volume knob, not the EQ or treble and bass settings! Everything hopped up makes the music overly loud, distorted, and obnoxious, and just fatigues the ear faster and can even damage your hearing. Music at it's best breathes and sounds three dimensional, everything that over-compression and volume boosting components destroy.

I saved up for my Sony's lol. I was so stoked when I bought them. Although now I want the Stanton's and I'm working on a custom design for them. Once I get that all sorted out, I'm gonna see if I can custom order them as I designed them.

Sony's MDR-NC7 Noise Cancelling Headphones are excellent.Plus you won't have to break the bank either(I got mine's for $30 at a Duane Reade pharmacy).

They really make me smile from ear to ear how good they are!

I will also hate on Skull Candy. They 'look cool' and that's it.

I do not like ear buds. I have small ear holes.

Yes, ear holes.

I've tried a lot of brands. You can't go wrong with Sennheiser or AKG.

04/20/11 9:53 AM

Sennheiser is bar-none my favorite within-price-range headphones. I've had two or three pairs, and they've been so good to me.

I've also owned several Skullcandy, different models. I have to agree with everyone sound-quality wise, and let me also add that the material itself used for these things are garbage. I bought supposed top of the line headphones, and the very next day they broke. They literally snapped in half as I put them on.

I love my Sennheiser SD-570 cans. Priced at about $100, but they may have been discontinued. Large enough clearance from the earcups and pads to not touch my chimp ears, and sufficiently ventilated, enabling me to wear them for hours. The cord is on one side only, and detachable, so you can rip the cord out accidentally and just plug it back in - or replace it if you break it. Since the ports on the sides and the pads bleed sound, these aren't good for recording vocals, but their even response from highs to lows makes them great for making rough mixes and for listening to any kind of music.

Koss SportaPro. Fucking amazing and for $35 with an unlimeted lifetime warranty you can't go wrong. The SportaPro's add the option of being able to fold the band behind your head and look more modern (and they cost less)... other than that they are the same as the ledgengary PortPro's.

I really feel there is no argument against these in the sub $50 range and even at sub $100 I would buy them again.

I second Sennheiser had my last set for AGES and I was impressed with how long they lasted.

In the house I use Bose. Cost me a lot but worth every penny.

Skullcandy earphones are absolutely SHIT! They don't last well.

Sennheiser is always a safe bet...I recently took a risk and bought Phiaton. Not only do they look awesome, they also sound great for closed cans. I have only had them for about 6 months, so I cannot really comment on longevity yet.

If you're into over-the-ear studio headphones, the Audio-Technica ATH-M35's produce GREAT sound and are $50 on Amazon. The suggested retail price is $139 to $149. Best Buy has them for $139, but Amazon has the marked way down.

Another brand I've recently used is WeSC. They were surprisingly good for a pair of $30 headphones.

09/13/11 6:32 PM

Skull Candy headphones are for trendster children and wannabe rappers. Do not pick them up or I while have to punch you ;D.
Anyways, most things made by AKG or Sennheiser are going to be good.
That looks pretty decent, and it's only $98 (plus shipping).

10/04/11 3:15 PM

audio technica m40. Sound quality can't be beat for the price.

Unfortunately, temptation got the best of me and I got a pair of Beats last month. Not too bad. I bet the Studios sounder nicer than my Solos. Then of course, there are the Studio Pros. Which if I had $400 to spend on a pair of headphones, I'd consider them.

Besides joining the skullcandy hate, I can tell you that Aerial7 isn't good either.
They're a brand similar to Skullcandy in that style comes before sound. I've got the Aerial7 tanks and although they're by far not as bad as Skullcandies, they've got muddy mids, weak bass and generally don't work for any music that involves actual instruments (electronic stuff sounds alright though).

I've had the best experience with KOSS Portapro so far, though I've already broken two pairs (and haven't looked into the warranty yet, mainly because I have neither my check nor the packaging).
Planning on getting [www.eu.audio-technica.com] soon, as I've seen them for 80€ (Japan import).

12/28/11 2:51 PM

Okay, I get the point that Skullcandy sucks. Does that hate carry over to the Skullcandy Aviators? I've been reading some generally positive reviews about them (from reviewers who generally don't like Skullcandy products).

02/06/12 5:27 AM

Skullcandy = BAD
Sennheiser = QUALITY

Look into buying a pair of Sennheiser HD-25 i's. The best headphones you can get your hands on.

03/15/12 12:34 AM

Sennheiser makes some damn good headphones.. I have a pair of their CX400 earbuds and I love them, great quality sound and range without having to turn them up too loud.. I can only assume that anything they make in an over ear would have the same excellent quality..

03/20/12 10:25 PM

I got the Bose QuietComfort 15's two years ago. Nothing compares still.....

As for Skullcandy....I have to say that they're not bad for the "average" music listener. My ex had a pair of the earbuds that weren't that bad for workout/casual use. They're a good price for a decent pair of headphones I think but definitely not for the audiophile.

i don't think so. i've used sony mdr-v6's that are 70 dollars for years. i tried 200+ dollar beats and they were so lacking in comparison. but coming from a big studio exec/owner trying to market headphones with celebrities...what can you expect..other than overpriced commercial crap?
