What sorta strings & picks do you people use?

I prefer Ernie Ball strings in these gauges: .010 .013 .017 .026 .030 .060.

And Dunlop Tortex .73 picks.

Maybe I'm not coming with something knew but I've discovered that last week and I'm amazed by their quality the Vox Amplug.

I've bought an AC30 and got it on monday, I've been playing 3 hours with it each day !
Plugged in my Gibson Les Paul Classic with my Sony MDR-V6 the sound is just great, now I can practice Led Zeppelin / Jimi Hendrix / ... at night without disturbing anyone.

I just got a Vox DA5 to replace the Micro Cube I had some time ago. It's great! Not super awesome, but definately better than the Micro Cube's super dark amp models and untweakable effects. Plus, it's red! Perfect for when I just want to noodle a bit and can't be arsed to set up the X3 Live.

Elixir 010-046's and a 056 for standard, drop A, ADADGBE and such. For 1-step down, drop G etc. 010-052's and a 068 for the 7th, also Elixir obviously. I wish they made a 060 guitar string, the 056 is a little bit too loose.

Oh, and Jazz III picks, they're the best. I love small picks. I sometimes use the XL versions too, if I need to strum a lot. I don't really use picks with acoustics, but if I do, they're either very thick (1,5mm or 2mm) or quite thin (0,88 Tortexes are nice)

Yeah the amplug AC30 has a best clean / crunchy sound than my damn Peavey Bandit 112.

I used to play with Dunlop Tortex 0.73 picks, then I went on Alice 0.81 and now I am cool with DT 0.88.
Oh, makes me wanna create a topic about picks.

About the strings :
Gibson Les Paul, EADGBE, Gibson Les Paul Strings 10-46
ESP Ltd F-2005, CFA#D#GC (2 step down), Dean Markley Nickelsteel 10-52 (I should change that to a custom set, like Michael Amott probably)
Fender Eletro-acoustic J5 signature, EADGBE, D'Addario Phosphor Bronze 11-52
Ibanez Gax 70, D#G#C#F#A#D# (half step down), Dean Markley Nickelsteel 10-46

I've used Earnie Balls a long time ago with my Ibanez, had a lot of broken strings so I've stopped, no problem with Dean Markley.

string question: Change them when they look dirty, and start to lose tune easily. You should also setup the guitar almost every time you change strings (depends on the temperature changes in your area).

Guitar Rig 2: It has some awesome tones for recording different sounds and creating new tones, but it doesn't exactly replace a good amp and decent effects pedals. It's better experienced through pa speakers or studio monitors. I think it's a great program to try before you buy certain pedals. The effects are also really nice on synth instruments. When it comes to using it live, I recommend having a really fast computer with a high quality sound card with low latency. I mostly find myself lost in the presets, which gets me off task while trying to create my own tones.

Is anyone else tired of guitar solos that sound like scales? I keep getting really annoyed with a lot of metal bands with how you hear chugging and then dedally dedally dee in some weird first and third unison, and the singer sounds like he's burping the abc's into the mic. By that time, the guitar hero dudes have to go change their pants, while I'm bored out of my skull. Sorry to rant, but I've noticed that trend for some time now.

I use Dunlop Gator .96's. They are perfect because they grip better than a regular pick. As far as strings, I have been playing the new Dunlop strings. My PRS is loaded with 11's and my Gibson Les Paul has 10's.

I learned at first just using tabs for like 2 yrs. Then i took some classes at school and got lucky because I got a teacher that really was awesome. I learned theory, and sight reading from him.

Alright, here's my setup:

Guitars:

Black Squire Tele Custom II with 2 Duncan Designed P-90s
Black Squire Strat Standard
A Custom, handmade acoustic I bought in Mexico (E A D = steel strings, G B e = gut strings)

edit: I really can't hear a HUGE difference between squires and most fenders,

Amps:
Johnson 30b (30 Watt)
Fender Frontman (15 Watt)

Effects:
Boss DS-1 (Distortion)
Boss SD-1 (SUPER Overdrive)
Boss BF-3 (Flanger)
Danelectro FAB Chorus

Strings:
D'Addario Super Lights (I usually change them every 4-6 months)

It's a beginner's setup (because I'm a relative noob!tongue sticking out smiley) but I think it sounds great.

I got a tnerrot ( winking smiley ) of it but I'm having problems actually playing through it. I have it on my desktop PC for now just to see if I like it enough to put on my laptop. I have my guitar plugged into a ds-1 pedal (not switched on) into the back of my PC. All I get over my speakers is an annoying high pitched tone. sad smiley Anybody want to help me out?

Since my new band's first show is tomorrow night, figured I would post what I am using currently.

Ibanez G10 guitar - yea it kinda sucks but its comfy to play. Strat coming when I get cash.
Behringer FCB1010 MIDI pedal
Art TubeMP USB PreAmp (SICK)
M-Audio MIDI Sport
MacBook 13.3" running Mainstage with Guitar Rig 3 plugin
Boss Chorus pedal
Boss Overdrive/Distortion pedal
Fender Squier amp, like 35 watts or something, just to get me by for now (with mics there is no need for much bigger)
Practice amp = Peavey Jagermeister custom practice amp. (looks tight but too small)

Our first show tomorrow, can't wait! My first show in like 7 years. We play like rock/funk/punk/reggae so I don't need a massive stack or anything, though I do wish I had a Double or Triple Rectifier! I just got the Art TubeMP and it improved my guitar sound so much, it's crazy. No noise, and especially the distortion just cuts right through everything now!

I have had ZERO problems with Mainstage/Guitar Rig 3 as well, it's been awesome. No latency, no freezes, no issues. And I only have 1GB of RAM right now (4GB Low Latency is on it's way to me as we speak though). I will post if I have any problems, but so far I would highly recommend this to anybody wanting unlimited effects. To me it's not much different than real pedals, I mean either way it's being processed, be it by pedal or computer. Get the FCB1010 and once you get it programmed its super super easy.

*** UPDATE ***
For the first time, right when I need it NOT to happen, Mainstage crashed during our show. Lucky it was a part where I didn't need to be heard much. Still blows. Seems it was on a patch change, may have to see if there are updates or something. I'm still going to say it's awesome though, as that's the only time it's happened and I am getting new RAM in few days anyways.

For all you guitarists out there with sensitive neighbours/parents/siblings/pet hamsters, I'm having a clear out in my loft and have one of these for sale.

It's an Arion HotWat II headphone practice amp (but you could take the line out and feed it through an amp/mixer) that has some rather nifty little on-board FX included too.

As far as price goes, they retail here in the UK at around £80, but seeing as I've used it a grand total of about twice, I'd settle for £65 o.n.o. (incl. P&P)

If anyone wants it, PM me.

Yeah, I love Meshuggah, but I intend to use it for more than just djenting the low F#. Twelve string? The left guitar is an 8-string, it's the Rg2228 by Ibanez. The right one is my own custom 7-string by a luthier called Ales Vychodil. I'm getting an 8-string built by the same luthier too, we're just planning it.

i dunno what to buy, but i want THAT sound smiling smiley

I'm trying to write this and not sound like an arse, so please bear that in mind lol. Pretty much the only guitar that sounds like a les paul is a les paul, they're pretty unique. Even within the les paul range there's quite a bit of variation but to tget the best "classic" tone the rule of thumb is the heavier the guitar the better.
so thats the main problem - which model of that gibsons gives that sound? smiling smiley
im confusing with all that custom/classic/etc :/

VVVVV thanks for the info! smiling smiley
Well many Les Pauls sound different. This depends on age, the amp, pickups, strings, even the pick you use, etc. So saying that classic tone doesn't help us out. The best way to find the Les Paul best suited for you is to goto a Music Store and try out several different Les Pauls by Gibson and Epiphone. (Those are the two official Les Paul makers. All other companies make clones that may not sound anything like an LP at all.) Rule of thumb I found with the Les Paul line is the more expensive the better sounding.

Native Instruments Guitar Rig

Do you use it? Do you like it? Would you EVER use it live?
Yes. Love it. Definately.

And as far as strings and pick talk goes I change my 2 main guitars strings every month. The more they get worn the easier they get out of tune. My bass has the same strings it had on a year ago. This is because I play a Thunderbird bass, I can throw it against the wall and its still in tune. For guitar I use .73 mm and for bass I use .88 mm. I use two brands. Dunlop Tortex and Star Picks. If you love Tortex picks check out Star Picks. They have a grip star cut into the pick which improves gripping and they last just as long as Tortex. The price is the same. I swap which picks I use depending on what I am playing.

Does anyone have any recommendation for some free writing software? I'm trying to locate a basic way to write/edit my stuff, no bells & whistles. Sort of like a simple editable tab sheet that I could simply add values (by keyboard, not line in) into and save... I was looking into Finale, but I'm hoping to find something to use on the fly, as in fast to load, super simple interface ect...

Anyways, thanks for any advice!

I used to have a pirated version a long time ago, think version 1 maybe, but i could use direct line in, but couldn't control any of the stompbox paramaters (you don't have the controller). I've demoed newer versions using line in, and i suppose you could probably rig up a midi foot controller to do the trick for switching. I really never used it standalone. But line in always worked for me.

I mainly use two 7-strings, a 6/6/6 Goth Epi Les Paul and a Fernandes Revolver Pro 7.

I tune in Drop-Ab... because when you're getting a 7-string for extra notes, you might as well use a drop tuning (and I like using my top 6 in a normal fashion), and the flat tuning is to cover my ass when singing high notes.

Just flipped to Ernie Ball, using a .010 to .046 set with .074 for my bottom string ... they die pretty fast but they're cheaper and more even-sounding than other strings. I'm sure anyone who's dealt with 7+ strings knows the customization nightmares...

If you haven't, then you should...it's the best pedal I've ever used!

And if you don't like fuzz, then they have flange, chorus, and delay.
They also have an RF copper plate effect which I really wanna try!

I have one, however it's not a "go-to" fuzzbox, it's too random for straight playing. I prefer a BigMuff Pi for that.

But the Zvex is great for that glitch/noisy/squealing kind of sounds winking smiley
I have it wired on my patchbay, just to feed whatever thru it ( via a radial reamping device, to match impedances and levels), it sounds chaotic if I feed my nord lead or some wavetable sequence ( of the waldorf microq) thru hot smiley
