Free Software for the Aspiring Musician

Well, being one that's not too terribly versed in the field of software and hardware but loves messing around with as many things as possible... I figured I would create a thread for those like me. Everything listed should be free of charge, if not a great demo version.

Tunafish Website
Tunafish is an extremely simple VSTi sequencer. It's interface is extremely user friendly, point, click, make a beat. What comes with it is great, but download other VSTIs and the possibilities are endless. I recommend getting the Minimoog one... probably one of the best when it comes to experimenting with this.

AP Tuner website
AP Tuner is a straight to the point instrument tuner. Place your guitar next to the computer mic (or mic the amp) and you're good to go. Easy and efficient for when you misplaced your guitar tuner.

Audacity website
Audacity is an extremely easy to use sound recorder, I haven't used it too terribly much yet but I've had a lot of success playing with it so far. Record, mix, edit... a studio for anyone messing around. Open source.

Guitar FX Box website
FXBox is a really kick ass program that essentially turns your computer into a guitar processor. Granted, there may be a bit lag if you're running a not so great computer, but otherwise I've noticed little to none. To plug your electric guitar into the computer you will need a 1/4th to 1/8th jack, but you can find these at any regular Radioshack or guitar store. Loads of things to do, but I forget what the non registered version limits you to.

I'll add to the list when I find things, of course feel free to do so as well. Have fun!

4Front VST's are pretty cool. The piano, bass and e-piano modules are free. They're really lightweight and sound pretty decent.

This thread has been pretty helpful, are there any website sources that have decent sounding drum kits? And none of that HipHop producer trash haha, I've already sifted through all of that and found the good ones.

What are you looking for? The 909 and 808 sounds? Or a realistic drum kit?

Um, A few that are a bit more realistic, but have a wide variety of sounds. As well as some Industrial type metal clanks, Distorted Kits.. or even simple ones that i can distort. heh.

ReBirth has been free for download for some time now. I remember it still being a software you needed to pay for. If you haven't, you should really give it a try.

KVR Audiois a great place with a massive plugin database where you can look up both open source and commercial plugins.

I use it all the time and have found some really great sounding effects and synths there.

Last I heard, it was released for free by Propellerhead and you can't/don't have to buy it anymore.
I'd love to play with it again.
EDIT: You have to be a registered Reason user to download it for free according to that website.
I don't wanna put illegal software on my mac, also it's apparently not so compatible with OS X *sigh*

Does anyone here know some good music composing software that's either free or very cheap? I have barely any money, so I can't get something uber expensive.

Jeskola Buzz
Reaper

Learn them well.

Reaper is very good indeed considering how cheap it is. The OSX beta version is apparently a bit buggy though, haven't used it yet so I can't comment on that.

you dont have to be a reason user....you just have to follow the registration when it prompts you to. I have downloaded it and I am DEFINITELY NOT a reason user.
