Why not? I do it often when recording, it's quick and easy to dampen unwanted overtones & taming sustain. Last time I recorded, I would've ended up with a super shitty BD sound, if I hadn't had some tape for the resonance head.

I also use one of those "rings" on my 14" TT, because it resonates too easily when I tune it low.

Dampening is sometimes necessary when recording, but you shouldn't resort to tape. There are products that do a far better job.

You should never use dampening live though. It's those ringing overtones that help cut through the mix and give your drums body and tone.

09/30/08 5:19 PM

Hey man if it does the job, why not?

10/01/08 1:16 AM

It looks horrendous and it's not easily removed.

A piece of Moon Gel (or Drum Drops) - awesome. You can easily adjust the amount of dampening, re-use it over and over again and it won't mark your heads. It's only a couple of quid.

Tape - ugly, leaves adhesive residue, and isn't even that effective at dampening.

Yeah, but I only use tape that's easy to remove and doesn't leave any residue. For me, it works really well. On my own kit I've only needed it on my BD so far though. On some shittier kits with super horrible heads I've needed to use more.

You'd be far better off buying some decent heads and taking the time to tune properly, IMO.

And I've never heard of people using tape on a bass drum before. Buy an EMAD & REMAD, or use a towel.

That's what I'd do myself, yeah, but I do recording and some of the kits that drummers want to record with are... interesting. I don't have a studio or anything, just a mobile recording rig, so the only solution is really to use the drummer's own kit.

I haven't done it myself or seen it done either, but I only needed a little bit of dampening, because the resonance head was making a weird noise in one spot, so I put a small bit of tape there and it was gone. I need to switch my BD heads soon anyway, but I didn't have money when we did that recording (it's €50 per bassdrum head here, so €100 in total, ouch). And yeah, I keep a small towel inside, which dampens the beater head a little. And yeah, we spent an hour tuning just the bass drum before we recorded, the tape was my last resort and luckily it did the trick.

And after all that hassle, I realized that the sound was crap anyway, so I replaced it with a sample grinning smiley as you can see on my gear list, I only have a T-bone bass drum mic, and it was the first time I used it. Next time I'll either borrow or buy a better mic!

Just something that came to mind while typing that... I remember one of the first (or even the first?) real recordings I did, which was my friends' band... the drumkit was an old beaten up Tama Swingstar kit with all new heads. The only solution to make them sound ok was to tape the "tone" out of everything, and stuff the bass drum full of pillows. It was still horrible though grinning smiley no amount of tuning made it sound good, even with new heads. That wasn't the only fucked up thing in the session, listening to that demo still makes me laugh. Hopefully I've improved since doing that!

Ahh I see, fair point!

I want to get some studio work eventually, but I think having to deal with other drummers would make me cry sometimes haha - there's an awful lot of noobery about, especially down here.

10/02/08 8:57 PM

I'm only gonna mention what i find to be the most important stuff i use:
Rode K2 - great australian mics at an awesome price for what you get
TL Audio Valve Preamps - You need a good source, these make vox and direct line from instruments and synths awesome.
Guitar splitter from HERE - so i can record the same take of the same instrument thru different sounds, and have a DI line too.
FX pedals - so inspring and fun
Maton MS2000DXSD (black, ofcourse) - a great instrument is essential :]

but i learnt this from playing with a band called Intrasonic - you gotta have everything sorted and working, otherwise you cant get anything done.

there is some pics of my studio on my myspace :]

10/03/08 6:22 AM

I don't own these yet, but I'll probably order them tomorrow or saturday:
-Korg Kaossilator
-Korg Kaoss pad 3 or Kaoss pad mini, I haven't decided yet
-Oktava Mk319

I was watching some youtube videos of the Kaossilator and now I just HAVE to get one. I think I'm getting the Kaoss Pad 3 instead of the mini version, because the mini lacks midi and some other stuff I'd like to have. Has anyone used the KP3 as a midi controller BTW? I'm really excited about them!

Oh shit, after I wrote that, I found this: [www.youtube.com]

Now I want one too! Too bad they're €900, so I won't be getting one soon. Or a monome... I can't play any keys, so something intuitive like that would be super awesome.

I Ordered the KP3, the kaossilator, a rack and monitor stands for my truth's (finally!). I'm getting the Oktava in a week or so, depends on when I get emailed back from the distributor. The reason why I'm getting the Oktava is that apparently the Joly mod (which I'll get made later when I can afford it) apparently makes it unbelievably good.

Getting new gear is fun! Not having any money after spending your savings on gear is not haha. I'm getting a new bass soon too, since the BTB406 is going to be sold tomorrow. Something in the same price range.

If you haven't noticed, it's pretty clear that I have a chronic GAS which pops up every now and then grinning smiley

10/07/08 8:49 PM

Yeah, new gear is fun. I am scheduled to have my first piece of gear delivered tomorrow, a Korg EMX-1... To fucking bad I am going to be in class until 9:30... Oh and before that, I'll be at work all day. I hate it when new stuff gets here and you cant even barely open it up!

10/08/08 2:47 PM

I just ordered a MOTU 828 Mk II Firewire Interface.

Quite stoked, but I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into haha. Christ, recording is an expensive world, especially for drummers =/

I don't have the capacity to do that right now because where I am I have no access to any recording equipment at the moment, trust me though it's worth the investment!

I kind of do more creating than getting gear, mostly because if I learn to do it right with crap it will get easier with better gear later on.

Intel dual core 2.7Ghz 4Gb ram
Audigy sound card (yes I know it sucks, never going creative again)

Behringer UMX61USB MIDI STUDI0 keyboard
sennheiser HD215 headphones

You would laugh if I told you my speakers, they are closer to a cabinet than a speaker box lol.

FL studio7 (handy for generating ideas, for me at least)
Cubase SX4 (mixing mostly, will usually bounce my midi tracks beforehand in another program so get a different sound)
Wavelab 6 (for the mastering)
