Haha Like i said, I use to use a broken down Logitech head set and it worked wonders. And now I use a Snare drum microphone to record vocal, it works well enough but i am looking to invest in a condenser microphone soon enough.

Frankly, the crappier the mic, the better it sounds.

I've done work experience in a recording studio before, it was a pretty cool weekend. The key is to ask people you know if you can help out.

Thank you for your advice - also thanks wraith. I will look into it and let you guys know.

I spent a while writing stuff for local bands but it wasnt really what I wanted to do. So, I did what I could - set up Cakewalk on my PC, and started to put the bones of the songs down in MIDI. Then play in any keyboard parts live. The other thing I like to do is record the single MIDI track back into Cakewalk then use the plug-ins to play about with the audio that you get. For me, not being technically advanced on things like the Bass and Guitar it keeps everything in time but gets great sounds. Using Real Guitar and this method you can get some pretty cool sounding 'Guitars'. I have just had to plug in another 1GB of RAM to accommodate all the audio parts.

Thats where I am now, not as experienced as some of you guys but after what I have learned using Cakewalk I am ready to upgrade to Sonar. And I am just about to finish off my Demo.

damn it. with this forum i found a new home.

to not be off-topic: i use some macbook pro (i'm too lazy to look up the stats) which has never failed me and a mbox2pro hooked up on anything i can find. usually i mix on genelec 1031s, krk 7000s or sometimes even westlake bbsm4. if i have to i'll do mixes on my ath m40fs too (but they always end up creepy in translation). for mastering a have to rely on 1037s (i guess the studio wouldn't afford any pmcs).

however, i'll work on and with anything i can find or that inspires me.

regarding any discussion whether to use macs, pcs, protools, logic, live, whatever: use whatever you feel most comfortable with.
have fun with it and don't limit yourself because of gear!!

p.s.: i myself could never afford all those creepy gear like tons of monitors or mics, but i started sharing with two (and more) friends, a commercial recording studio (where i work at) and a rental company (same).

see you

You all make me feel so broke!

Oh well;

Bass/Guitar

Bass: Squier MB-4 Skull + Crossbones bass
Guitar 1 (main): Ibanez RG120
Guitar 2: Epiphone SG Special (gift from a friend)

I run the guitars mainly through a Digitech Grunge pedal, "grunge" knob set to about 1/4, into a Boss GEB-7 bass EQ, into my crappy Crate bass amp. Sometimes I throw a Boss OC-3 Super Octave in between the two to get a thicker sound. I also have a modded Boss DS-1 distortion that I use rarely.

I run the bass through a Morley Bad Horsie II Wah into the Digitech Grunge, "grunge" knob up full if I'm using it, and then the EQ into the amp.

Nothing special there.

Computer

I use an M-Audio Axiom 25 MIDI controller in FL Studio 8 with too many VST's to list.

I plan to get a simple recording interface soon. And my next guitar is probably going to be a decent step up to an Ibanez RGT6EXFX, and much further after that I want to get a Parker Fly Deluxe.

Guitarist/songmaker by trade, but recently invested in some studio gear as I've been itching to get in to it for years and finally had the coin to satiate my burning desire. Inventory as follows:

Studio Gear:

HP Notebook PC w/ 2.4GHz Intel chip, 3GB RAM, 500GB HD, 17.1" widescreen (I think...?)
...running Cubase 4 on the PC (soon to be 4.5!!)
Presonus Firestudio Interface w/Firewire
Tannoy Reveal 5A Powered Monitors
M-Audio Axiom 49 MIDI Controller
AKG C2000B & C1000S Condensor Mics
Shure SM58 Dynamic Mic
V-AMP 2 for Guitar
Pop-filter, stands, a library full of manuals, blah blah...

Guitar Gear:

Guitars and amp:
Epiphone Les Paul Studio Guitar
Ibanez RG170 Guitar
Yamaha FGX-something Acoustic-Electric
Marshall MG100 Amp w/ AVT 412 Cabinet
Squire P-Bass
Peavey Express 112 Combo Amp
Effects:
Jim Dunlop Hendrix Wah Pedal
DOD Grunge Distortion
DOD Stero Phaser
MXR Distortion +
Boss DD-3 Delay
Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus
Zoom Acoustic Sim
Marshall Footswitch
Custom-designed and custom-built pedal board
Leads, cables, picks, etc.

Looking through the list I probably don't have the most elusive (and expensive) gear around, but hey, it's what you do with it right?? And let me tell you I know how to use it (and after all these years I have spent a small fortune anyway!) Well I love my gear!!! grinning smiley And this is all phase 1... now saving for phase 2, upgrades.

Only about 1/3 of my gear is pictured. I have more synths, and my guitar and bass rigs in another room. My current favorite piece of non-pictured gear is my MidiNES. I also recently replaced the shitty old Ludwig drum kit with a Pearl Masters Studio kit. I use an assortment of old 60's and 70's broadcast mics, beaten up pawn shop mics, and an array of Russian condenser mics. I don't use much legitimate "musical equipment". You're more likely to see me micing dumpsters and banging on them than you are to see me with my guitar in my hands.

I have too much software to list, but I fucking hate software.
Sounds cheap.

Because they sound incredible, have wall to wall imaging, and have huge bass even at low listening levels. They're pretty efficient and are capable of big SPL's, but most of my listening is around 75-80dB.

LOL @ the Spinal Tap reference.

I´m not a fan of huge bass sound. I mean, it just tears the sound apart. There is so much more to the music than a bass drum or bass guitar pumping on your chest. It´s just my opinion though
