What gear do you have?

Computer wise, software, hardware etc...

I have a 2.2GHz 15" Macbook Pro with Logic Studio, Novation ReMOTE 25SL Compact as my MIDI controller and currently an unused M-Audio FireWire Solo interface + Event ALP monitors (all I could afford) still in their box. My studio isn't really set up properly because I don't have any space for a table to place all my gear on. I'm just not sure when I'll get around to it. It's been sitting there for nearly a year.
Not so great to boast about, but does the job for my doof doof haha smiling bouncing smiley

The Novation stuff I assume is better quality just by looking at specs/price. But I got the Axiom at a pretty good deal, and needed a controller anyway. The keys feel pretty good, they have some resistance, but aren't weighted too much. Just a good feel for synth work. I guess some "piano" players probably won't like it. The trigger pads actually feel pretty good, and the faders/rotary knobs are smooth. Programming on it is a breeze too.

Yeah, I got a lot right now. I'm running a mobile studio in my town, so I've slowly just been adding to the pile. I really only play bass now live, but just hanging on to the guitar stuff for my own recordings and stuff.

08/16/08 6:50 AM

Hmm.

At present I possess a Mac Pro, various usb midi interfaces, a crappy tascam audio/midi usb thingy, roland rd700sx, fantom X7, RS-9. And some old yamaha kiddie keyboard with lots of colourfull buttons... does that one count?
Oh and I've been slowly learning Logic 8. I don't say I *use* it, more like it uses me and something is produced... Then I feel dirty...

08/16/08 7:05 AM

I'm finding the automapping really confusing. Gahh bugger. Never mind.

I actually have a really old Yamaha keyboard that I learnt on. It has totally cool sounds on it. eye rolling smiley
Logic Studio is way nicer than previous versions. I really like the whole one screen thing, so I don't have to worry about those dual monitors. Back at TAFE, yeah, it was essential (Logic 7) one screen for arrange, one for the bloody mixer and room for the visuals... Film sound was err, not what I was into lol.
I love having it all in one screen, makes life a lot easier grinning smiley

Can someone explain me the reason why nearly everyone uses Apple? I'm not a fan of Microsoft (actually i dislike it but the same goes with apple winking smiley ) but what are the Pros on it? and softwarewise same question... i worked with logic 8 and i have to say that imo cubase 4 is much better...?!?!?!

08/16/08 1:44 PM

just because i wanna show off my total and complete failure of a hardware setup...

PC with 2.81ghz dual core and 2gb of ram
M-Audio Jamlab (fail #1)
a collection of mics i know nothing about (fail #2)
Peavey MP4 Plus mixer (fail #3)

somehow i manage to get decent sounding records out of just that. as for instruments:

Custom Rhoads-bodied guitar (build from the remains of a Kramer Vanguard i owned that bit the dust when the lower half broke off. it now has a white, RR24 copy paintjob, 2 EMG81 pickups, chrome hardware and a chrome floyd rose)
brandless classical guitar
Washburn Lyon acoustic
About half a guitar (strat body and neck, currently. soon to have black pickguard with EMG81, Dragonfire single coil and EMG-S pickups along with gold hardware and a gold floyd)
a slew of Yamaha keyboards

..and my crappy Line 6 1x12 Spider III (yuck, ew) amp.

08/16/08 3:25 PM

Off the top of my head I have (again sorry for the list)

4GHz duel core PC running windows XP
Focusrite Sapphire LE
Cubase SX3
Rode NT1
Yamaha 12x2 Mixing Console
Akai 12 track harddisk recorder

More softsynths and drum loopers than I care to count

Hand Built guitar, somewhere between an Ibanez and a Les Paul
Ibanez Artist AR300CS (the 80s type not the reissue)
Samick SW 230 CE (acoustic)
Westfield Strat (a pretty decent fender reject)
Handful of cheap guitars that aren't worth selling that I might give away at some point
Line6 PodXT Live
Crate PowerBlock
Marshall 4x12 Cab
Line6 Flextone II XL Combo
Laney LC30 Combo
eBow

Nord Lead 2
Fatar 880 master keyboard (88weighted keys and all that malarky)
Korg Electribe S-MkII
Yamaha MU10
A Mini stylophone thingy

What I really want to get next are a few more mics and a bass rig. I used to borrow from people I was working with but I'm currently in the process of putting a new project together so I am a bit short in that area now :-/

i use it for Logic Studio

and because i like Unix/Linux

I would never EVER go back to Microsoft for anything audio, seriously.

I honestly don't really care between Apple and Microsoft. I've used Cubase, Logic and Pro Tools. Pro Tools is slightly superior to the other two in my opinion but the price reflects that.

Because Trent Reznor Uses Apple.

DUH!!!

No really though... Cubase? are you kidding me?

Logic blows Cubase out of the water. Cubase is a pile of shit compared to Logic.

Pro Tools is the Industry standard.

So is Brittney Spears.

Go Figure.

Logic FTW.

08/16/08 7:38 PM

Hahaha. Pro Tools is good to some extent, ie, recording directly or dumping tape, but it doesn't come with anything good to mix with. You need all your own plugins or more so hardware to even make it seem good, not to mention the $1800 TDM dongle thing if you want the damn Rotor Cabinet or whatever. Logic already comes with great plugins and at the price it's at now, is more than a million bangs for your buck. It's simple to use, you get really cool plugins plus all the 16,495 Apple loops that come with it. I don't use the loops, but meh, they're there if I need them. I'd rather rock out on ES2 and make my own sounds than take the shortcut because I'm lazy. cool smiley
Cubase is only good because it's Steinberg and therefore is the only program to support the most common plugin, VST... I still prefer Audio Units!!!
I actually do kinda miss all the illegal software on my PC, Fruity Loops has some pretty neat plugins, plus I miss playing around with my bootleg version of Vanguard and Ravity (best drum machine evaar omg). The damn computer is too slow to run anything though. I still have to buy Vanguard and Ravity, but I don't have any cashola.

PC:
HP Pavillion a6300f PC, 500GB, Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor.

software:

Acid Pro 4.0
SoundForge 8.0
FL8
Waves Diamond Bundle and various VST's and plugins....too many to name.

instruments:

Ibanex Rx Candy Apple green
Alesis Sr-16
Oxygen8
Zoom 234 Rhythmtrack drum machine
Boss ME-50 guitar processor
Boss Sp-202 sampler
Casio CTK (cheesy, but gets the job done)
Martin acoustic/electric

and as for the software debate: it depends on how good the USER and how good the ear is. other than that, it's all personal preference.

08/17/08 12:09 AM

Oooh, what's FL8 like? Just an improvement on the interface?
Sorry, I just miss my old methods of production haha.

i give you my top 3:

- There's no other audio production suite (and partially video) that you can relate about for the price and the bundle
- 6 dvds for the libraries
- the new interface, the most easy and immediate to use

08/17/08 1:24 PM

I find there's little difference bewteen the ease of the interfaces of all three. I find cubase easier becasue I've used itmost but can see the sense of logic too. A guy I work wit is logic through and through and he finds that easier.

well the amount of plugins and samples etc. that comes with it is really a big plus

Cubase is also for me easier to use, but i gotta say I tried and worked with logic 7, maybe logic 8 is really better now than cubase...but cubase 4 imo is hard competition

Also, drawing Automation routines in Logic is fucking eating cake, so damn easy and simple
