Logic Pro 8

What's everybody's take on this program? I'm considering on saving up for a MacBook just so I can get this program and start recording. Anyone have any experience with the program?

09/03/08 8:16 PM

Well I wouldn´t buy a MacBook just to use Logic. I´m pretty sure it´s a cool programm but I´d think twice about spending so much money for it (and the MacBook!) only to have something to record music. There are cheaper DAW softwares available which get you where you want to be (in a musical way).

But that´s just my humble opinion winking smiley

09/03/08 8:39 PM

All right, what're some of those DAW softwares that you mentioned so I can check them out?

Thanks for the imput, btw!

09/04/08 4:18 AM

I'm in the process of teaching myself to use Logic Pro cuz it's always handy to know a new program...

Nice, how's it run, compared to other programs?

=)

Logic is an incredible program which has improved dramatically over the years.

If you're on a budget, there is always Logic Express (which is just a stripped down version). I've been working with Apple's marketing department for 3 months now...I went to a Logic workshop, and was simply amazed at some of the stuff it could do.

But I guess you just need to ask yourself if you'd use all the features or not, and is it worth buying a whole new laptop solely for it? It'd have to be a MacBook Pro if you wanted it to run smoothly.

An inescapable truth is that there are 3 kings in Software DAW right now, and those are

-PRO TOOLS
-LOGIC STUDIO
-CUBASE

Pro Tools is the top in terms of what everyone who works on audio in a professional studio uses . .
In terms of functionality, to me, it's kind of a toss up. All can do certain things, and mainly run certain plug-ins that the other can't. All have pros and cons that the other can fullfill.

Logic is a great DAW; I run Pro Tools. TRENT RUNS BOTH, which would be the ideal way to work I think . . . Wherever one falls short or makes you mad, the other might fill in the holes . .

This also all depends on what you're trying to do . . . Hope this helps . .

Try the program before you go out and buy an expensive setup. Granted, the new comp would be good for many other things as well. Try Express, or a workshop first. I just picked up Logic Pro 7 for $150, which I figure isn't bad, and it will run better than 8 would on my little PB G4.

Have you tried a hackintosh? I suppose it's a good option for those who are not well economically or live on a country whit a bad exchange (like me $3 = u$s 1)

I have my project of hackintosh, i got to buy another 500gb HD for install Leopard and then winking smiley Logic Pro 8

09/04/08 3:16 PM

i use Logic, and i make all my music with it, i think it's great. if i had more money i would have to pro tools, but with logic you have nearly everything you need

09/04/08 4:02 PM

Thanks everyone for the responses, it's helped a lot, but I guess I have one more question about Logic:

I've been doing a fair bit of research on the program (looking at the apple website, talking to computer-versed people, etc.) and I noticed that Logic Studio has some soft synths on it. Are they worth the money for Logic?

09/04/08 4:16 PM

Or I guess a better way to phrase that would be: Are the soft synths versatile and have good sound?

Sorry I've had a long and I'm not really thinking straight at the moment.

Best software ever! smiling smiley

In my opinion anyway.

09/05/08 2:33 AM

Logic is a one stop shop for all you need to make great music.

Pro Tools is a great, but your going to need more than what it comes with. Plus the proprietary hardware restrictions they put on it SUX.

I'd go Logic Express if I were just getting into it. Plus it's cheap

I was once a Pro Tools user. But I ditched it because because of all the great things I heard about Logic software instruments. I'm glad I did too. Logic is much more fun to work with than Pro Tools IMO.

09/05/08 6:27 AM

Yeah, Observer I've heard the exact same thing about Logic when compared to Pro Tools. Thanks for confirming that for me smiling smiley

I love Logic. I got my Mac about a quarter of the way into the summer and I'm even more in love with it than I knew I would be. Mind you, I've never used Pro Tools or anything, but I see no reason to bother with it at this point in time because Logic does everything I need it to. I learn something new every day. Yesterday my friend showed me a really cool thing involving busing a signal through Ultrabeat to make the signal actual go to a beat. And I here I was already loving Ultrabeat for the easy-to-use drums.

I use it for various types of music. Most of my tunes are acoustic but with lots and lots of electronic elements (beats, weird noises, etc.) and I love the sounds you can get out of the VSTs, either by tweaking them or sometimes using them as they are.

Not so, my friend! I use Logic Pro 8 on a 2.1 GHz processor with a measley gig of RAM and it runs just fine. Every once in a blue moon things will slow down but only momentarily and those are few and far in between, even with a fair number of tracks. Yes, at some point I will want to invest in a bigger hard drive, more RAM...fuck it, probably a top of the line Pro altogether but for right now, for what I need, this is plenty.

Fuck, I love Logic smiling smiley

I second Captain Molotov

I run Logic 8 and reason 4 rewire pretty damn smoothly on my white Macbook with 2 gigs of RAM upgrade.

I really like Logic. The interface is friendly, the output sound is very good and the native plugins are fucking great. There's so much to do with this.
Ultrabeat is an awesome drum machine. It's definitely not a waste of money. I've been using fruity loops, Cubase and then Logic on pc and I'm reborn since I'm on Mac and Logic.

Go!

09/05/08 3:38 PM

Thanks everyone! Just reading about all of this is getting me pumped to get a Mac (which will hopefully be in the near future) and Logic!

Oh, by the way, does Logic have a really steep learning curve?

09/05/08 6:00 PM

I found it to be very easy. Of course I was comming from Pro Tools land. Check out the website. Depending your needs, you might even be able to get away with just getting Logic Express, which I believe is only about $200.

09/05/08 10:50 PM

Yeah, I've looked at the website, but I'm not exactly positive what the differences are between Studio and Express. Anyone know what they leave out in Express?

Dude, not at all. What I love about Logic is that you can do thinks as simply or as complexly as you want to. It's not hard to navigate.

I'd look into getting Native Instruments Guitar Rig, which you can use as a plug-in for Logic. I know Trent's used it.

Really all I have is the Mac with Logic, a condenser and pre-amp, a guitar and interface, and a MIDI keyboard. That's by and large the extent of my gear for making sweet music.

09/05/08 11:55 PM

What kind of music do you make, Captain?

great post, dude smiling smiley

you covered it all. my friend worked with logic lately and criticized it in terms of cutting the music. he preffers cubase SX3, which I personally don´t like.

my band uses pro tools for demos and running live stuff from machine and it works well, also it is quite affordable IMO now.

09/07/08 11:08 AM

I'm still using Pro 7, and I absolutely love it. A few things here and there about the layout make me think that "Logic" is a bit of a misnomer, but once you get the hang of it, it'll change the way you work.

09/07/08 12:22 PM

I switched to Logic Pro 8 this year from running Cubase and Sonar on my windows machine...

Switching to Logic was the best decision i made musically i think, it's just the smoothest DAW i've ever worked with. And the interface is easy on the eyes which helps out so much. I've never used pro tools however so i cannot comment.

09/08/08 8:49 PM

Logic FTW

09/14/08 10:23 PM

Im running Logic Studio on a macbook(admittedly with 4 gig of ram) it is a 2Ghz Dual Core Processor.. Runs quite nicely its only when i have like about 15 simultaneous tracks running that i notice any load on the processor....

It just feels right for me as well. I find i can customise what i want and just really enjoy making music with this program

ITS AWESOME!!!

10/16/08 11:46 AM

I fucking want LOGIC!!! I've been on a Logic kick for a couple of weeks now, and it just seems so much more user friendly than Pro Tools . . .

Don't get me wrong, I busted my DAW cherry on Pro Tools, and will always love it, especially now that Pro Tools 8 is about to come out . . but I want both, NNOOOWWW!!!!!

10/17/08 12:44 AM

QUESTION!!!

I read in the Logic Manual that (very briefly) that you can export Logic sessions as OMF files. Can these files in turn generate a Pro Tools session with all the Audio files and session data converted?
