Ok, so it dawned on me when I received a letter from Fairlight, telling me that I have been invited as a VIP guest to the Fairlight Open Day, complete with personalised invitation and everything. Now, I can't exactly make it up to their office, so it does suck
There's no thread on the Fairlight system, or synthesizers here, so I thought I'd start one.
Just a brief: Fairlight was supposedly named after a ferry on Sydney Harbour, which was named after the surburb, Fairlight next to Manly. All in all, Australian invention, stand proud fellow Aussies. Fairlight made the benchmark back in the, 70's? I think, on being the first digital audio workstation available in the world. Unfortunately I don't think they patented it and lacked recognition, when AKAI put a patent on theirs. Fairlight systems are predominantly used in film and television, post-production sound design etc. It's hard to come by somebody that actually knows how to use one. (Don't ask me to boot up a Fairlight Prodigy, PLEASE!)
My experience with a Fairlight, while I was studying audio and film sound, argh, I had no choice but to use a Fairlight system to record bands that would come in. Probably because it was an older system, it would've been harder than using the Dream with crystalcore technology, which looked like a breeze to use when I went to the SMPTE expo.
So yeah, anyone else familiar with this system?
Lara.
