I somewhat drum. I hook my Rock Band drums up to my computer and use a program called "Drum Machine." But now that they added that freestyle option in Rock Band 2, I just use that. I am too poor to buy a real drum kit.

Well, I've been drumming for almost 4 years now (kinda scary since I still consider myself sub-par by my standards) and am quite serious about it. Currently I'm in a punk rock band (don't worry, we use more than 4 chords and have melodies) that plays an occasional gig, but unfortunately we live in rural Iowa.

Anywho, I'm still playing on a used standard 5-piece Ludwig Accent set. Cymbals include a pair of heavily used 14" Camber II hi-hats, 14" Paiste Bronze 201 crash, and some random Planet Z ride (it came with the set). Hardware is mismatched with only one really decent stand, and I've got a Pulse single pedal for the kick drum. As you can see, not anyone's dream set, but with decent heads it gets the job done and doesn't sound half bad.

I've been looking to upgrade, though don't have the cash to do so. I want a punchy sound with lots of impact and presence from the toms, so I'm thinkin' maybe a birch set would do. The bass drum should be able to cut through with lots of attack (not a big fan of deep, bassy sounding kick drums). For the snare I want a sheer, cracking sound reminiscent of a marching snare (obviously tightening the head would help). Cymbals should be bright and cut through the mix. I'm kinda partial to crash rides, but I want one without annoying overtones and a defined, cutting bell. Any suggestions as to what I should be looking for would help immensely. Price should be under $1500 bucks (with our without cymbals).

12/05/08 8:46 PM

Pearl ELX w/ Amber Fade and black rims and mountings
22" kick
16" Floor tom
12" 10" and 8" Toms
14.5" by 6" snare

Pearl Eliminator Double Pedal
Pearl Stands

20" Sabian B8 ride (working on replacing)
20" Sabian Paragon crash
16" Sabian Vault V crash
16" Wuhan china
14" Sabian high hats

Evans EC2's on all the toms
Remo coated Ambassador on the snare
Aquarian Superkick 2 on the bass

Vic Firth 5A nylon tip sticks

BTW: I'm looking for a good Sabian ride cymbal. I play in a metal band right now, but I play everything, so hopefully a cymbal that can cover all the bases. Any suggestions?

My Frankenkit:

Yamaha Oak Custom 22" kick (booms like a cannon)
Spaun 14x7 Maple snare (highly recommended)
1960s Gretsch vintage 13" rack tom (with a coated head, sounds perfect)
Yamaha Birch Custom floor tom 16"
Zildjian A Custom hats, ride two crashes - originally bought ZBTs - returned them the next day . . . the A Customs work fine - record well - there are better cymbals but these don't suck

A Yamaha Rydeen is a safe bet - decent hardware and shells (some beginner kits are truly shoddy) with a pack of Sabian AAX cymbals. Can't go wrong with that.

I'd always advise buying splurging more cash on cymbals, even if you're just playing at home, because cheap cymbals tend to break pretty easily, and you'll get hella tired playing trashcan lids.

Good luck to you man.

And ninrules? YOU ROCK! Great sense of timing at such a young age (if Trent can get Ilan at 19, you've got yourself a viable opportunity!)

I've suscribed to your YouTube channel. Looking forward to more stuff, bro! =)

I love drums. Haven`t played in a long long time. I`m not really a great drummer because i haven`t really played with a band, but if i find one, i`d love to play....

Favorite drummers: Matt Cameron, Dave Grohl, Matt Johnson, Tyler Hawkins + Nick Mason/Lars Ulrich

01/14/09 11:21 PM

i used to drum a lot in high school, and now only have a shitty generic kit i've had for years, and keep patching the fucker up.

i'm not a great drummer anymore (if ever i was), so with my current music i tend to use a mix of my live drumming and programmed beats, reconstructing my own drumming in progs to fix most of the fuckups.

i'm the only permanent member of my project, so i just put everything together piece by piece and gradually build each song from the ground up that way.

Greetings Drummers. Im not a drummer myself but i recently came across a site and wish to have actual drummers debate as to the uniqueness of the said drums so here it is and have at it..Would You?.? Won't You?.? Are you stuck on your brand of drums, Do they look Legit?

personally i'd like to try them out for fucks sake.

Gimmick.

Resonant heads are too fundamental to the sound of a drum to do without.

02/08/09 9:40 AM

round 3 setlist:

The Big comedown

head like a hole (intro)

the begginning of the end

burn

and with teeth

coming soon smiling smiley

Hey !

I plan to buy a drum kit in the coming months for studio work mainly, but as I'm mostly a keyboardist, I just can PLAY the drums, and don't really know the different trends and stuffs like that...

So I need help, I want a drum kit that is rock solid (I hit and play like Dave Grohl...), sounds great, and is still not too expensive.

My dream kit would be :

Bass Drum
Snare
1 x 14 or 16 inch Tum + 2 x Floors (16 and 18, or 18 and 20)
Hi-Hat
Crash Ride

What company or model would you recommend ? What kind of snares, bass drums size, tums size, cymbals...etc ?

Any recommendation can help, thanks !

As a drummer primarily, I would definitely recommend that you look into Sonor products.
I own a Sonor Force 3005 Maple drum kit, and I can tell you that it's one of the nicest mid-line drum kits you could ever purchase for the price. They recently upgraded the line to 3007 with different Maple shell construction, shorter tom depths, and different lug designs, but it's essentially the same drum series. I've done some recording with my kit, and the quality that I've been able to achieve with the sound of Sonor is excellent.

Here's a link to a Sonor kit I think would do just fine for the applications you're asking for. it's relatively cheap, it offers the specs you're looking for, and it comprises the sound and durability Sonor is known for as well. They look nice too!

Sonor SSE Rock 5-Piece

In terms of cymbals, I prefer Paiste; I play a mixture of Paiste Signatures and Alphas (New Editions) and use a RUDE ride. Paiste are on the pricey side however, so you may want to look into Meinl or Sabian for some great cymbal choices as well. I dislike Zildjian for their inconsistency. but that's just me. Anyway, hope this helps!

Yep! I'm a member there. I used to be very active, but now-a-days I just lurk in the chit-chat and show us your kits sections. I believe the IQ levels and time passing have a correlation at the PDF; a correlation with disappearing. tongue sticking out smiley

I think I may have seen your kit there as well. If not, it may have been someone else who had a very similar set up as yours. Pretty kickin', nonetheless. cool smiley

I knew I'd seen that set up somewhere!

Thanks dude, same here really. PDF is rarely worth posting on these days IMO.

That's mostly why I decided to start afresh here on the NIN forums. Different crowd, different forum. Which is a good thing.

Nice kits guys, i've got a DW with Sabian symbols. Love playing NIN favourite songs to play have to be March of the Pigs and The Collector, been trying to get the hang of Wish today, cant seem to pick it up...

I love playing drums, but I'm not that good. I don't have a drumset of my own, but I often practice on a kit at my school. I'm in Rockschool, which is a class in which we cover rock songs. I can keep a steady beat most of the time. It's fun!

Very interesting set up you have there, Balls! ^^^

Nice bass, too. I've always thought using a lefty pedal on a righty kit would be cool. Kudos!
