The Keyboard/Controller/Synth Thread!

Since there are so many people opening threads to ask about keyboards, keyboard-controllers, and synths, i though maybe there should be one thread for all, so we can discuss and/or ask about different choices!

I´ll start asking about the M-AUDIO axiom 49. I´v read great things about it, but i want your opinion. I would use it with reason 4 mainly...

I tried one of them, it felt too much like a toy.
I use a Korg microKontrol, it's got a more solid feel to it, and it works perfectly with Reason 3 & 4.
Reason automatically picks up what it is and assigns all the controls sensibly.

I tried the Axioms alongside the Novation Remote series, and took the Novation home. The key bed felt better, the controller knobs felt more substantial, and even down to the plastic it felt like a better made unit. M-Audio makes a great $99 keyboard, but after that they don't get good again until you hit the Keystation Pro 88 IMO

I have an Akai MPK49 which I'm pretty damn happy with.
I use it with alot of different software apps but I'm mostly using it with Native Instruments Akoustik Piano....not to get off topic or anything

It´s not offtopic at all. I started this thread so we could discuss that sort of stuff...

Nice, well in that case.

Yeah, Native Instruments Akoustik Piano is an amazing sounding app
The best I've ever played (for piano sounds) the real feel of it just gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
The Akai I use is very touch sensitive as well so you really get all the expression you could expect when playing an app like Akoustik Piano
You guys would have to be the true judges though as I have just started to teach myself the piano after thinking about it for the last 20yrs

uhmm , i was also wondering about the Axiom Pro 49 ... is it REALLY that bad ? I saw some pretty good reviews about it ... but what about the key "sensitivity" ?
In your opinion , what are other good keyboard-controllers under the same price range ( below 500 bucks ) ? I will mainly use it with Cubase ....

Hello everybody, I've been really interested in making music with the likes and sound of NIN and I have been screwing around in Ableton Live and Fruity Loops and I really want to get a MIDI Keyboard or a synth. And synths are WAY too expensive. I know some MIDI Keyboards are cheap but if anybody has one laying around that they want to sell for cheap, I'd be glad to take it off their hands. Thanks!

I like the Axioms (I have a 25), and they work well with Reason, but mine can get pretty scratched up live. My main controller is an MPK49, I like the Axiom's action better, but the keys don't feel as solid as the MPK49 and the Axiom's knobs all feel different.

I can't remember why, but I think the reason I didn't pick up the Axiom w because the knobs didn't have a fluid motion, I can't remember the term that's used here, but when you turn them they click to the next setting. I didn't like that, so I went with the Edirol PCR-300...which has been great.

Does anybody have any experience with the M-AUDIO KEYSTATION PRO 88? I need a full sized Midi controller - an other option would be to get say an Axiom 25 or 49, and a full sized digital piano.

The Fatar Numa would be nice as a controller, but its out of my price range atm. Any opinions appreciated!

Nova musik has some great deals on the Remote SL series from Novation. Novation's Remote SL and X-Station have the best semi-weighted synth action among the midi controllers out there. The axioms feel too springy, and this makes them feel cheap.

As far as 88 key controllers go, I think the best option is to get a separate small controller and a cheaper digital piano for nice hammer action. The Keystation Pro 88 is fine for the price (but not great overall), but the fatar numa is overpriced, and they put the wheel on the side (why??). The Yamaha KX8 (not to be confused with kx88) feels mushy in comparison to most of the digital pianos, but it is decent. If you can find a good price on it, it might be worth it.

Keep in mind that keyboard feel is a personal thing, you might disagree with my assessment.

Cheers! I'll look into digital pianos - its too bad that I cant fit a real one home. Nothing beats a real one...

The Casio Privias though not great digital pianos, have better feeling action than the Yamaha KX8 and M-Audio offerings for ~$500 which is a price in between those two.
