I want to learn French...

Hi everyone, hope all is well on your side of the world : )

I've recently decided to learn French again. Last year I tried but then I got easily distracted by life. Too many things going on at the same time and I didn't have enough hours to dedicate to a new language.

But now that I'm taking a break from college and recording my debut album, I have a little bit of extra time to once again try and learn French ; )

So what I'm wondering is this:

"Are there any textbooks out there that progressively allow you to learn French grammar, pronunciation, and structure?"

What I mean by "progressively" is that let's say the book has 12 chapters in it. Well, each chapter gets progressively more interesting and challenging and the only way to understand the next chapter is if you've gone through the ones before it.

Well then, thank you very much for your time and consideration and I look forward to your reply. Take care.

Peace.

P.S.- I'm very well aware of the fact that you can't learn a language from books alone. However, I would really like to get an overall understanding of the French language's sentence structure so that when I communicate with my friends in France, that I at least know what I'm talking about, lol.

Thanks again.

Hi,

Well, in France we have a shit president but... hum... we are still alive.

I guess that the easier thing to do for you would be to get (and I mean get, nothing else :p) a "Tell me more" method, or the "Teach Yourself French" or "French in Action". Check reviews on amazon.
(I'm going to start this week the Teach Yourself Norwegian)

Then, when you'll have enough bases, you should check french websites. [www.20minutes.fr] is a good news site and there's also a pdf newspaper everyday of the week.
Then movies, but old one, since 90% of what we got now is crap sad smiley

Hey thanks for the info bro. I decided to get my hands on Rosetta Stone to see how that works out. I'll let you know if it's worth it in case they have something for Norwegian as well.

All the best.

Hi Rezon8, If you want to learn French, there's only one way.. Speak with french's people.
So, speak with us on the internet ( chat, vocals, and so one)
But, the best thing to do is to come in France, and try to be understand by french citizen.
See you around.

movies are a good way too
with the subtitles on, so that you can read what they are saying

we do good movies in Quebec
Try 'Dédé à travers les brumes' that just got out
its the story of one of our best poete signer that killed himself harakiri style...
hard to watch but the best movie from here this year.

Melifu, merci pour la référence du film.
Juste pour savoir, c'est du français Canadien ou pas ?
Bonne soirée.

Whatever book you should to study with I think you really should take one with a CD that will help you with the pronunciation. I'm starting to learn German with a book and the CD is of great help! Good luck anyway, French is a hard language to learn I think...

Not textbooks but:

- The "learn french by podcast" podcast is very good - teaches you key phrases through current affairs
- watch shows you know in French. I download Desperate Housewives, and there's someone that uploads them with French subtitles. I find it helps me learn new things.
- if you can afford it, the BBC do an amazing DVD called Muzzy. It's meant for schoolkids, but it's so fucking awesome. They did the French and Italian videos at my school, up to GCSE level.
- French Songs. Just google for them
- Visit France - may be pricey, but it's ideal. but don't go to Paris, because they'll try to talk English to you.

Really, any kind of experience is better than learning from a textbook. It's why half the world is forced to learn English - not through classes, but by being bombarded by film, music, and advertising in that language.

Wow, these are all great ideas. Thank you so much!

I have been in french immersion for 4 years and I think it's really the only way to learn... Hell in grade six I had no idea what was happening, thought it was insane and gonna take forever because we had to speak in french! I knew 0 french! I thought I'd never get anywhere and I was completely shocked when it just started coming together. But suddenly, I could speak a language. Same idea goes with the two people in our class who went to Quebec for a couple months and they came back and I couldn't even talk to them... because they had accents, and were so good, I sounded so bad next to them.

By the way there's a NIN Spotting in that film... Watch out when Dédé visits Pat at the Hospital he brings a poster of a crowd and there's a guy with a NIN shirt on the rail.

Yeah, right ... and when you'll talk this kind of french in France, people will laugh at you and through you stones winking smiley

Anyway, as already said, I suggest to start with the 'French For Dummies' which contains the basics. And then ... a grammar book (anyone for college students should be okay). And the best thing is, of course, to practice it. So if you have the opportunity, try to find the nearest "Alliance Française" (see this webiste) where you should be able to take lessons.

Are you saying that people will laugh at me and throw me stones if I ever go to France?

Don't worry, we don't throw stones anymore, we eat them.
Yeah, economic crisis, you know...

PS : we might eat you.

Totally - the French are very precious about their language - they even have a rule where the majority of songs on the radio have to be in French.

Actually that old law only force 10 or 20% french songs on the radio, I don't remember. That law was voted because ... well french music and cinema was dying, that still happens.

We are using more and more english terms, each time a new word appears, like email or spam, they actually are trying to make words for that but ten years too late, and .. they suck.

We also don't translate movie titles anymore, because it sounds cooler ! worst than that sometimes we change the movie title but still in english, just to be easier to understand for us ! yes, this is so lame, i think about "One hours photo" called "Photo obsession" and "Phone booth" called "Phone game". Omg that sucks too much.

But, that's nothing compared to Quebec, all their names are like 50 years old french names, they don't even know they use english far more than us ! (proof is this thread). Their accent for a start, well is pure english, listen to france, we are so far from how the english language sounds. They invented words and expressions directly from english, and decided to keep american accent each time they quote someone's name, i think about the word "present", sure it's very old french ... but i assure you even our old parents never use it.

So yeah we stopped translating things, guess how it sounds to us when some quebec guy is saying the quebec name for "Phone Booth" (lot of laughs) it sounds so lame comparing to an english name for us. We laff also each time you quote an english name, what's with the english accent ?
