I think Blue-ray readers and HD equipment are still too expensive in France...
Prices are only decreasing since this year...

Decent enough deal. I'll need to grab a BR for HD playback on my 37" HD CRT. I've just been rolling with a Samsung upconverting DVD player for the last 2 years on the tube, until someone emerged victorious from the format war.

In France, it's at least 200-250€
But I have no idea how much that makes in dollars...

Everyone needs to relax a bit...especially because you're wrong about this last part.
It only becomes digital, NOT HD in February....I pity anyone that buys a TV from you...

From the Analog to digital transition FAQ:

Your Television

If I want a new TV, will I have to buy a High Definition TV (HDTV) to watch digital broadcast television after the transition?

No. It is important to understand that the DTV transition is a transition from analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting. It is not a transition from analog broadcasting to High Definition broadcasting. Digital broadcasting allows for High Definition broadcasts, but High Definition is not required, and you do not need to buy a HDTV to watch digital TV. A Standard Definition DTV (which is simply a TV with an internal digital tuner), or a digital-to-analog converter box hooked to an analog TV, is all that is required to continue watching over-the-air broadcast television. Digital broadcast television includes Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) formats. You can watch High Definition programming on a Standard Definition DTV (or on an analog TV hooked to a digital-to-analog converter box), but it won’t be in full High Definition quality. It is also important to know that Standard Definition DTVs are comparably priced to similar sized analog TVs.

I was just thinking the same thing. Using the Usenet binary newsgroups to distribute this footage would GREATLY speed things up. Downloading the footgage using my Giganews newgroup provider at 9 Mbps would definitely trump the ~250 kB/s download speed I'm getting with the torrent. I did a search using the search feature in NewsBinPro and didn't see any of this cam footage out there in the newsgroups. I'm willing to help get the Sacramento show uploaded to the newsgroups. Right now I'm downloading Sacramento CAM1-1.mov from the torrent. As soon as it's completed downloading later tonight, I'll work on getting it uploaded to the newsgroups. It's been quite awhile since I've uploaded to a newsgroup, but I still have all the necessary tools (YencPowerPost, QuickPAR, WinRAR) and a Giganews account. alt.binaries.music.videos might be a good newsgroup to upload this footage to. There's also a dedicated alt.binaries.music.nin newsgroup that nobody seems to be using. I could cross-post to that newsgroup as well. Is anyone else out there experienced with the newsgroups and willing to help upload? It would only take 13 uploaders total to get all 5 cams of Sacramento up on the newsgroups. Each uploader would only have to download one of the Sacramento .mov files from the torrent and upload it to the newsgroup. The same could be done for the Victoria and Portland shows if there are enough uploaders able to participate.

For those who maybe aren't enough computer-savvy and feel they don't have anything to run HD video on, you might just have. If you have a fairly modern processor or especially a fairly modern ATI graphics card (anything from a HD 2600 - which is really cheap nowadays - upwards, I think), should be able to watch at least 720p. I dunno if NVidia has the same thing as well, but these new ATI cards have HD acceleration features. The player software needs to support it, but at the moment I think at least KMPlayer and the newest version of VLC Player do this. So even if you don't have Blu-Ray, it's pretty much certain that quite a few people will be posting edited HD video files on torrent sites, in .MKV or a similar format, which these players support.

Don't despair!

01/10/09 3:46 PM

No offense to everyone but if you cant even figure out if you can watch HD you probably have no place trying to download the HD footage or editing it for that matter. Leave the torrent channels open so the Pros can go in and do their job.

I sadly cannot due to Crapcast data caps and low disk space, I however know alot of people that use newsgroups, ill put the word out as well. Torrents are great and all, but its so dependant on too many factors, hopfully this will at least help the cause of getting this out to more people.

I'm loving the newsgroup idea. The last time I saw the alt.binaries.music.nin have some action was when some one leaked The Fragile on there about a month before the release. There's also
"alt.binaries.nine.inch.nails"
"alt.music.nin"
"alt.music.nin.creative"

I suppose since they are binary files that we should keep them in the binaries groups...but I would definitely cross post to one of the NIN binary groups. I'm currently downloading Sac show Cam5-3. I don't know how to post to newsgroups yet....but I'll figure it out. I'll help out and post this one, I hope others are willing to post as well. I think it would be good to post it to both "alt.binaries.music.nin" and "alt.binaries.music.videos".

for comcast users (such as myself unfortunately) i read up on the new 250gb monthly cap. they state that the first time you go over the 250gb monthly cap they will contact you to give you a warning and look into ways to keep you from going over the cap in the future.

now, if you go over the cap for a second time within a 6 month time frame, that is when they will take more serious action and suspend you from being able to have cable modem through comcast for 1 year.

some of you may not be willing to do this... as for myself, i have no problem getting my warning in order to d/l all 404gb of hd nin live loveliness. when they contact me to ask why i went over the cap i'm going to be completely honest and state that my favorite band since i was 12 years old (days away from being 29 years old currently) put up, for free and legal to d/l, hd footage of their last 3 live shows to edit/view/play with how i see fit. i'll also advise that this isn't something that can be purchased in stores.

finally, just want to say to trent the whole nin crew, this was the greatest live performance i have ever experienced, and probably ever will. it also happened to be my new wife's first live concert she had ever been to!

trent and company.... thank you for your art and all the hard work you put into it.

respectfully,

cody hall

Trust me, I am on your side, but its going all digital, not necessarily HD.

To the rest, HD isn't all that esoteric of a format anymore. Virtually any computer made in the past 2 years is capable of playing HD. I have a laptop at school that is a year and a half old and it plays 1080p flawlessly. It was higher end laptop new, but by today's standards its middle of the road.

You really only need to purchase a Blu-Ray player in the event that there is a physical release (seems likely) and you want to watch it on your HDTV (which are coming down in price so rapidly now). Alternatively, most people can hook their computers up to their TV's and get the same experience if they download a release (or if they have a Blu-Ray drive on their computer). Finally, you can watch it on your computer monitor as well.

I would venture to guess that 75% of the people interested in this release are capable of viewing HD content in one way or another without spending a dime (or spending very little).

To the other 25%, the beauty of beginning with a high quality format and editing that initially is that its easy to release a lower definition version quickly. This way, both parties are satisfied.

Awesome!
Uploading to the binary newsgroups isn't difficult, but there are a few steps to go through to create the RAR and PAR files for upload. Slyck.com has an excellent step-by-step guide to posting to the binary newsgroups.

The only change I would make to Slyck's upload method is the size of the RAR chunks. In their example, they create 15MB RAR chunks. That's too small for uploading large HD videos. I would instead use a minimum of 50MB chunks.

If you're new to uploading to the newsgroups and need to experiment first, I recommend doing test uploads to alt.binaries.test before uploading to alt.binaries.music.nin and alt.binaries.music.videos The alt.binaries.test newsgroup is there for this reason. No one will flame you if you mess up posting that newsgroup.

I couldn't give a flying fuck about what final product some of you choose. One person was good enough to convert the audio from the Sacramento show into WAV/MP3. From my understanding the 3 shows are in the same set list format anyway. I never bitched or moaned about what other formats you choose. You want to create a format which is only accessible to those with the bandwidth good on you. Have fun!

You seem to contradict yourself often, even within the same post. Sorry you live on a bandwidth limited island?

I'll make sure and petition that any bandwidth intensive media formats be surpressed, because you know...some people have shitty computers and internet connections.
