Helping to seed teh 404gb: Binary Newgroups - Help Wanted

Before the other thread gets locked....

Theres some talk and interest in helping the guys and gals doing the LITS editing, but seeders are falling off, as they always do with torrents. This is the beauty of Newsgroups.

My particular hands are tied in this matter, but hopefully it will grab the attention of those who can help, and then turn around and become seeders for the editors out there that are still torrent'ing.

Roll Call if you know what Im talking about and give a helping hand.

To the 28 people that are sitting on completed torrents FUCKING SEEEEEEEED smiling smiley ty

I don't know what you are talking about but I'm willing to give a helping hand with it and/or editing.

01/10/09 7:58 PM

I'd seed but I can't as there are no seeders to help me...

01/12/09 6:33 PM

Just a quick question...

Is it better to drop all torrents into the program at once and download/seed everything at the same time, while uploading as well? Or just do clips at a time from 1 torrent? Right now, since friday at about 7:30PM, I have been downloading Cam1 from Victoria and it is only at 14.5GB. Am I doing the right thing?

BTW, I am running Transmission 1.42 on a 2GHz Intel Core Duo iMac, 2GB RAM, OS X 10.4.11.

Please PM me or email me with any suggestions.

Thanks.

This has more to do with your network throughput, than your particular computer specs. What kind of connection are you running this on?

on 8MB/s cable...I've pulled down 20GB since Saturday or Sunday...whenever I had to reformat last. So, I'd venture to guess you're on a slightly slower residential cable connection. Which in short, means you're fine..lol smiling smiley

01/12/09 9:22 PM

I am using Cablevision's Optimum Online. Their site says I should get up to 15Mbps but I don't think this download has exceeded 100Kbps! I ran a speedtest and capped the upload speed. Is there anything I can do to increase the download speed, to maybe around 15Mbps?
Thanks.

If this went up on usenet I would jizz in my pants. It's been a week, and so far I have amassed... 3.15GB. I'll be leaving this to seed next year when it finishes, and agree that getting it into a newsgroup would be awesome (I'm not exactly sure how to do that)

thumbs up

01/13/09 1:41 PM

Would anyone be willing to copy the footage onto a hard drive for someone, say myself? Then I could copy it onto someone else's. Then that person could copy onto someone else's. So on and so forth. Is that a possibility?

It would take a matter of hours to copy between drives.

Does anyone who's downloaded the footage live in NY/Long Island? Or in and around the tri-state area? Is anyone else down with this idea? We could start a chain that would be much faster than this bittorrent nightmare.

Sean

Mine's going at 2kB/s. I'll fucking swim to NY and pick it up.

01/13/09 1:50 PM

Mine too! Actually no, 18.4Kbps. WTF!!!!!

01/13/09 12:58 PM

You only need to wait 7 months? Lucky bastard!

Maybe the problem is that some people aren't sharing the file (kind of missing the point of file sharing, I guess). I've got 0 of 13 seeders connected. One logged on last night and it went up to about 250, I thought I was in there, lol eye rolling smiley

I thought maybe someone had the full thing and had chopped it up into separate torrents for the pirate bay so that people could spread it round without having to handle such a gargantuan download, but no luck so far sad smiley

Maybe if we did that, the portion of the community without the storage space could join in downloading and seeding it to everyone else.

01/13/09 2:03 PM

I have only started to download the First Cam from Victoria. I can't even begin to imagine downloading the rest. This is ridiculous.

I am using Transmission which allows you to select the files for download, instead of trying to do the whole thing. But also, I think people started and gave up. Wait a minute!

I tried, but I gave up. That song now has new meaning! It's about downloading from these silly ass bittorrents!

01/13/09 1:08 PM

I think I might try that then... thanks for the idea thumbs up

Would I be right in thinking that you could make up new torrents for say, cam1 cam2 etc at each show, once you've downloaded each file?

Maybe if a few people do that, eventually more people end up with the whole thing. I know it's meant for editing, but on the main thread quite a lot of people have been saying they'd love to download it, but don't have the storage.

I'm wondering if was one torrent per show, deliberately. So that it's only the people who want to edit and re-upload to the site who tackle the challenge of obtaining the files in the first place and the galleries don't get overrun right away? Or if it's just an assumption on the part of whoever it was who found this footage that everyone out there has that much storage space tongue sticking out smiley

I'd be up for redistributing this on a per file basis if it's possible, and I can work out how to do it winking smiley

01/13/09 2:12 PM

I guess if you know how to make a torrent then I would assume you could. You could do 1 torrent per cam, per show? But you would have to download the shoe in it's entirety first right?

I assume you know how torrents work then right? IS it better to download the entire torrent, or selected clips like I am doing?

01/13/09 1:17 PM

Well, I tried selecting one file only in uTorrent, so it went ahead and started downloading the whole thing. I'm on Windows, so I'm going to look at trying another client.

I don't see a problem with selecting only one file, I think that'd be much easier. But I think the initial shock of seeing the file size is putting some people off. Say they saw something that said 20GB on it, they might not run to the hills so fast, and it'd be easier for everyone to distribute this.

I'm still drooling over the usenet idea.

01/13/09 2:29 PM

What is usenet?

01/13/09 1:38 PM

I think wiki can explain it better than me.

All I know is I got 7GB of footage (it was an AVI file) yesterday in 2 hours from it being posted in a newsgroup, which is pretty impressive considering the speed this torrent is going at. I only worked out how to use it yesterday.

01/13/09 2:40 PM

I plan to edit this stuff so I wouldn't want to sacrifice the HD QT files for a transcoded AVI. But, it took you 2 hours to download! That's awesome! I wonder if someone can do that for the individual clips since they are between 7 & 9 GB each? I would have a whole show in 1 day!

01/13/09 1:44 PM

I know... and despite having to work out a workaround for editing this in windows/premiere, I want all the files to be the same format, and as high quality as possible before I start editing. It's the download speed that impressed me as well, so if all this footage could get up there it would be awesome.

01/13/09 3:19 PM

How hard is it to put those downloaded files up there, in all their HD glory?

01/13/09 2:34 PM

No idea how to put them up, I've only just figured out how to get them down! It's worth looking into.

Edit: There's a bunch of stuff here (edit: some things in the list NSFW), if you fancy wading through it all and working out how to get it down. Google Super NZB if you want to look at how to download. I don't know what format that's all in, but there might be something in there worth looking at. I'm a newbie, so go easy if it's a pile of shit, I'm just investigating this as I'm so impressed with the download speed.

Me too. This is actually the first time I've encountered a BitTorrent. So, I think you are a few steps ahead of me!

I think I just learned that BitTorrent DL speeds depend on the seeds, not the program. Here I am trying every BitTorrent program known to our species and all along it has nothing to do with that! They're basically all the same save for some add'l features and what not. But they all output the same speed. Looks like by this time next year I will have a finished blu-ray! Want a copy?

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!

01/13/09 4:00 PM

Yeah, I have no idea what any of that stuff is on there. It says HD but the file sizes are really small.

Guess I'm gonna wait it out...

01/13/09 3:05 PM

Yeah, looks like it, but I'm going to keep checking. Not a clue how to put anything up there. It does seem to be in tiny little pieces, and I've no idea how I'd put those back together!

So what are you up to with this? Own project, group project etc? smiling smiley

Gimme! thumbs up

I can watch it while my download creeps toward 70%

01/13/09 4:12 PM

I contacted thisoneisonus.org and I may be doing something with them. I think I may be doing my own version as well. All in all I just want to watch the damn show no matter how it gets done!

Maybe extract the audio for a CD to listen to while I drive to work.

I looked into Blu-ray duplication and I may be able to get it done through a friend of mine. All we need is for 100 people to come up with $25-30 each!

01/13/09 3:20 PM

I may just have to buy a blu-ray player now! The upgrades just keep on coming.

I'm a bit of a control freak so I'll be taking five years months on getting it perfect... I'm not even an editor. Maybe it will be five years.

I'm sure I'll still be watching your blu-ray in 2012 when I'm working on it! eye rolling smiley

01/13/09 4:22 PM

I'll prolly still be downloading the footage in 2012 so take your time!

01/13/09 3:29 PM

I'll race you!

Now I'm asking for trouble, I know...

But I am going to keep checking that newsgroup, just in case winking smiley

Thanks.

For starters uncap your upload speed. Capping upload speed restricts download speed.
