KC 5.27.09 Dvd Project

Update: 03/17/10
We're getting close to releasing the torrents into the wild. It's been a long strange trip. Please join us on twitter, the website, and youtube for all future updates and information.

Project Status: Post Production / Distribution

Project Definition:
We want to capture the Kansas City NIN|JA 2009 concert as experienced by the fans and make it available to anyone who wants it. We'll be collecting video and stills at the PRE-PARTY, at the venue before the concert, the concert itself, and any other footage we can get our hands on. We'll then have the contributors send their raw footage to a single member who will copy and distribute the footage to the editors. The editor's will work their magic, create the menu's, and compile the dvd's for distribution (simple right?)

I think there might be at least one other person-I'll try to get it all sorted out soon.

I believe Cheeseproceedure plans to put his own DVD together as well-I was however the first to offer to create an edit and my preference would be some sort of collaborative effort where we perhaps split up the editing duties and such. It does however depend on if we can settle on a specific "style" for how everything will be put together.

I'll personally be using Adobe Premiere CS4 for editing-I believe he's going to be using Sony Vegas.

Ascension is more or less in charge of coordinating things-hence why he started the thread. grinning smiley

This has the potential to be something really cool. That cover is fucking awesome.

Since there are some people filming from the terr. level, I'll probably focus on JMJ, Ilan and obviously TR.

I know the songs, so I'll be able to make sure they are in frame when they are doing cool shit. I'm going to try and keep zooming in and out to a minimum.

Note that the set list will be changing frequently during the tour-there may be a few staples, but it's impossible to tell at least until NIN plays their second show.

Here's a link to a larger project cataloging footage from the tour as a whole: [www.reflectinginthechrome.com]

I'd rather still do a concert video centered around this particular show, however.

Me too even though it's more work for the editors grinning smiley

P.S. I just picked up a couple of Toshiba 16GB SDHC flash cards for $29 at Sam's Club. That's the cheapest I've been able to find.

05/09/09 9:29 PM

Judging from Tampa's set list we're certainly going to be in for a few surprises-not sure if that's good or bad. PLEASE TRENT PLAY "AND ALL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN" in Kansas City!!...

...Okay, got that out of my system...I think...

Got my four extra batteries today-so I've got five in total which should hopefully last me the whole show.

I'm still trying for backstage passes but I'm half tempted to start trying for Chicago just so I can see a second show with another (and probably longer) set list.

Also, yay for Sam's Club! Might try going there myself-can't hurt to have another SDHC card-especially a 16GB one.

I'm direct center, 3rd row. I don't have recording equipment, but if someone wanted me to film some with THEIR equipment I'd be willing for at least a few songs.

I have an extra old camera that can film at 640 pixels I might be willing to lend out for filming-as long as I can get it back, either through mail or at a particular location after the concert.

I'm working on getting a portable flash based audio recorder (trying to find a place that rents them out). If I can get my hands on one, maybe you could hold on to it and press a few buttons once and a while?

I'll do whatever, solong as I can still enjoy the show. My wife may be willing to help aswell.

I will be filming the show along with the Chicago show in HD for my website Lost In Reviews

i don't have that great of a camcorder, so i'm just going to stick to taking some pics with my regular camera since i got some poop seats towards the back. that said, i can't wait to see what the rest of you guys put together!

Even a not so great camcorder would be alright-and to anyone with analog equipment-I DO have a Dazzle recording device I can use to transfer things from VHS to my desktop.

Also, it would be awesome to get a dedicated audio recording as well.

My old camera is a Kodak Easypix with 3x optical zoom (which of course can't be controlled while filming-but zooming in and out during a song can be distracting anyway-although for those who can zoom if you think you can get a better angle or something I can always cut away during moments where zoom is being adjusted). I could try getting a 2 GB SD card but I've got a bunch of 1GB ones which should suffice if I can find them all and clear them out.

It does have a nasty feature where if it gets too dark it'll stop recording which is why I loathe the thing and wanted to get a new one-since NIN will be playing during the day however it may not be as much of an issue I hope. Also the reduced amount of zoom shouldn't be too bad since it sounds like your seat is pretty close.

It takes two AA batteries, I can bring a bunch or you can-that would save me some trouble.

Also, I might require a back-up form of transportation to the show-although since I'd have a second ticket I'd probably need someone who wouldn't normally be able to go to the show-which could be a bit complicated because it's like "mMybe you could go if something happens and my friend ends up not being able to".

Thanks to this I was able to create this three-dimensional seating chart with a bit more detail. I used a couple of photos to fill in details that weren't in the model's texture:

God, that's fucking sexy.

05/11/09 2:29 PM

Here's my latest concept for the DVD sleeve artwork-this would probably be for a version which focuses mainly on NIN-but I'd probably include the other bands as well in some form even if I used this. It's also somewhat dependant on NIN playing "Somewhat Damaged". lol

Again click the image for a larger version (which is, btw over 4MB in size):

I've also downloaded all the covers from (I think) every NIN release to try to put together into some sort of photo collage.

05/11/09 2:43 PM

I'd like to see a cover that uses the wave goodbye logos/theme.

05/11/09 3:30 PM

Hm do you have any plans for a physical copy for people that can not download the torrent?

And I think the first cover on this page is the best one, its sexy!

05/11/09 3:50 PM

I'm right by the dot in Orch1 (PC1). I'll record video or audio (willing to record all audio and SOME video) depending on what kind of equipment anyone is willing to lend me.

05/11/09 6:31 PM

You should really use my mini version of the map-there's a reason why I made it so you have to click on the thing to view the full-size version.

Yeah I put the dot there I think to represent you-so you are in the Producer's Circle, then?

I'd put something on the map to represent it and separate it out from the Orchestra except that it looks like there's nothing there that visually separates the two sections from each other-I'd probably have to count the rows or something...

I was thinking of including the Waving Goodbye thing in the collage image I'm working on. It'll have every release by NIN (with maybe a few exceptions that I couldn't find on NINWiki) and even somethings that weren't released if you look closely.

05/11/09 5:38 PM

Yeah, it was just between classes, I just grabbed it and stuck a dot on there. You get the idea, so it's gone now. I'm also willing to donate time to the design work if you want--that is my job after all.

05/11/09 7:46 PM

The Producers' Circle is tiny anyway. I was there in person a couple of weeks ago, and I remember it being a little under half the width of the Orchestra section, and only 4-5 (tightly packed) rows deep. Also, the section is barely separated from the ORCH section, a few feet at maximum. For the map's purposes, it's pretty insignificant.

05/11/09 10:50 PM

I've been asked about how contributor's would be credited for their footage that gets used.

DJGamer, is it possible to create a credits chapter and list each contributor for each song?

Would everyone be happy with that or is there some other way you think people's footage should be credited?

Me too thumbs up but I also like the first one that DJGamer posted

Hi guys.

I'm one of the winners of the Twitter contest, so I have tickets and backstage passes. I'll be bringing my iPhone w/cam and video, and also my (sub-par) camcorder. I'll do what I can to contribute to this project. Hopefully, I won't be recording from the floor when I pass out from all the excitement.

If you need help with any of the media, webspace (I have my own server), or anything else, feel free to hit me up.

Ascension, I sent you a PM, too.

I do have a Waving Goodbye-themed front cover but I didn't think it turned out too well, plus for a concert that technically centers around three bands NIN|JA works a little better anyway.

As for credits, it's pretty easy to do in Premiere-you can see an example of it at the end of my Down In It video.

I should also mention here that I'll be bringing my iPod Touch with the NIN App on it-I think there are enough Sky Hook hot spots in KS to allow me to use the "Nearby" feature.

I might consider bringing my camcorder but unless I could get in with a tripod, I don't think I would want to do video of the show. I wasn't able to enjoy the LITS show as much as I wanted so I want to make sure I can this time around. I could maybe plan to do some pre-party and in line video to let others save battery and or tape (for those of us still using tape). My seats are PLZ1 Row L Seats 3-4. They are fairly centered if someone had a nice audio recorder they want me to use.

In the posted camera policy, a tripod is a no go.

In other news, I'll be getting an extra battery in the next week, so I'll have plenty of power to get all of NIN. Depending on what's left, I might be able to swing the whole Jane's set, if not I'll get a few songs to add to the DVD.

Yeah I read it. I sent a message to jdub816 to see about possibly getting away with it. winking smiley
