O2 Multi-Cam Project

08/26/09 2:54 PM

As many of you know from the O2 thread I am working on a multi-cam edit of the whole show. So far I've done the following tracks which can be viewed in my profile or on YouTube:

Now I'm Nothing
Terrible Lie
1,000,000
Heresy
March of The Pigs
Repile
The Becoming
I'm Afraid of Americans
Burn

Next up is Gave Up. Has anyone got any more video of this song? At the moment I can only find one recording, by Lone28, and I could really do with at least 1 or 2 more

It's not really DVD quality as I have been working at the lowest common denominator (480x320) to get the greatest variety of footage in there and most of it is 4:3 rather than widescreen, some was filmed on phones etc, but it's looking pretty good so far if I do say so myself cool smiley

I'll also make the whole thing available as a whole gig download when it's finished....

If anyone has got any additional footage of Gave Up please let me know. In the meantime I'll skip over it and do La Mer etc smiling bouncing smiley

I'm totally looking forward to seeing the whole thing!
Thank you for your effort twinkUK smiling smiley

No problem - enjoying doing it, though it's taking quite a long time in between other work! I have set myself a target of trying to do a track a day if I haven't got anything else specific on - if I get the audio through tonight I'll have a promo video to edit tomorrow for another band, otherwise I'll try and get La Mer done instead as I'm in meetings all day Friday smiling bouncing smiley

No offense, and I really intend this as constructive criticism, but your editing style looks quite sloppy so far.

I've watched Now, I'm Nothing, Burn, and The Becoming, and it looks like you're cutting to every drum beat, which isn't what editing live video is about at all. Slow down the pace a little, and try and echo the energy in the song rather than cutting every X seconds. The first two shots for Now, I'm Nothing are really good, but then I got disappointed very quickly. Also - I know the video sources you have aren't the best - but try and pick out the best shots from each camera, and not cut while the camera's zooming in or out. There's also a lot of flashing light going on that I know wasn't in the performance, which is extremely distracting.

11 seconds into 1000000 - that's a really good camera angle, but it's useless using it when the drum tech is walking all around the shot. 30-45 seconds is generally a lot better pace-wise, but watch out for cutting in an A-B-A-B style - the viewer will become consciously aware of it, and again, that's really distracting. The first chorus is a lot better by comparison, aside from two shots that are super-short that could be timed better.

This has the potential to be really good - hopefully what I've said will be helpful!

None (well not much) taken tongue sticking out smiley

I don't mean to sound defensive but there are reasons why I have edited it the way that I have, most of which are driven by the footage. For example I only have 2 camera angles for most of 1,000,000 so cutting A-B-A-B is unavoidable and using clips such as that with the drum tech in is because it's better than the other angle at that particular point in time. Some of the camera angles are also similar, so I have also had to try and avoid cutting from one clip to another that's too much alike. I have deliberately not moved any clips around to try and improve that, preferring to keep it as a true record of what was going on at any one point

This is also the reason why some of the shots have zooms in them - I have actually tried to avoid this where possible as I agree it's distracting but sometimes it just isn't because the alternatives are either too shaky, out of focus, have someone walking in front of them etc (and people were zooming in and out a lot!). Selecting the best from each camera has been my starting point in each case. This was not professionally but fan-filmed and I guess that's part of the charm, though it does place some limitations on how it can be edited, and indirectly also means that longer shots aren't always possible usually because of shake or focus, which in my opinion are more distracting if held

All the flashes are actually there on the footage (I haven't altered any of the footage in any way and all cuts are straight) so they were part of the performance, just exaggerated by how some cameras picked them up

Ultimately the style of music videos is also a matter of taste and the faster cuts is something that I think suits the music better (granted, in the right places) and this is first and foremost for my own pleasure. That said, it's not quite how I would have done things had I got consistently high quality footage to work with, but it is what it is - a spontaneous post-event fan project using non-coordinated/planned fan-shot footage that focusses more on the feeling of being there than the technical. I'll bear your comments in mind though as I continue

If anyone is aware of any additional footage for Gave Up (plus 1,000,000 and Non Entity) then please give me a shout - the more I have to work with the better the end result will be smileys with beer

That's cool - I totally understand if it's something outside of your control. A couple of songs for AVOTT had crappy cameras, and it took aaaages of fiddling about to get it workable.

Whose audio are you using? Given what you said about frame size above, I think releasing an iPod version would be really cool - easily downloadable too.

It was just something that occured to me would be cool after the gig when I saw people's footage going up. If I'd thought about it beforehand I would have co-ordinated things a bit more (the camera guidelines elsewhere on here are good)

As it is it's made entirely of footage that people were filming at the time just for their own pleasure rather than as part of a project so it has a good raw "I was there" feel to it, where filming it was secondary to enjoying it. It's been a bugger to edit though, and my wife thinks I'm bonkers spending so much time playing with it!

The iPod version is probably the way to go as I'm guessing even at that size a 1hr 50 min video is going to come out pretty big eye popping smiley

Nice topic smiling smiley

Like the idea of doing a project of London O2. Did some multicams of the last Euro tour too. Started with Amsterdam a week after the show but i couldn't find descent audio or video of the whole setlist. So ended up with different locations.

Fun is, i was stuck at Gave Up too. lol

I think the toughest part is to synch the audio with the different video sources. That takes some time. Then the editing fun can begin.

Sometimes you can't avoid to have a crap shot or to mix it up with HD footage. I try to avoid it and i think 10 percent of my multicams have it.

Don't make a videoclip style of it. Like what icklekitty said. Looking forward to your new work winking smiley

For some reason Gave Up wasn't a popular one to film lol

I'll carry on with the rest but not sure what to do with that one if I don't find other footage as it's going to stand out like a sore thumb if it's the only single camera one (and I think shot on a mobile) I don't want to end up dropping photos or something else in there as that will look even more odd

I've opted for completeness and variety over excluding clips for image quality alone, which some may disagree with but that's a deliberate decision and what makes this slightly different tongue sticking out smiley

Oh, Icklekitty, audio is taken from the FLAC that was posted on dimeadozen - I've been in touch with the taper and he's cool with that so long as I share the finished product afterwards thumbs up

La Mer up as well now - not the most exciting edit but I'm not convinced about it live away, and the footage is all very dark for obvious reasons. I slowed the cuts down and put some crossfades in this time though for a bit of variety lol

Slowly unfortunately - I have been rather focussed recently on trying to drum up normal business to pay the bills, as bands keep postponing things because they haven't got any money and are losing their day jobs etc sad smiley

So this has had to take a back seat for a while but I have just done "The Fragile" tonight and should get "Non-Entity" done tomorrow as I only have 2 cams of that so it won't take long. Then it's on to "The Big Come Down" which should be a good one - I'll try and get that done by next weekend

I am however now over an hour into the show, so more than half way there smiling bouncing smiley

(i posted this is the previous gig thread)

Hey all... Ok it has been forever since this gig, so i doubt many people will see this, but after getting my life back in order I finally got around to building a DVD of the video i filmed of NIN at the O2. I was stood front center. With only some short women i was trying to protect infront of me. I personally think the video came out ok, but unfortunately my video camera switched on in my pocket during Janes Addiction, so it wasnt at full battery, meaning i only got a small portion of the set. I also had to help someone out of the pit twice while filming (i am a big guy and its easy for me to pick people up) so that kinda interupted the filming. Anyways, i created a .ISO file for what i filmed and what the BBC showed of them at Reading and Leeds Festival. It also has a bunch of their music videos put on there as a bonus. If anyone wants to torrent it off me then just send me an email to

Kojiro12000@hotmail.com and just mention NIN DVD somewhere in the email or in the subject or something, and i will email you the torrent. I am not on any of the torrent sites so i cant upload it there, but i will email you back the torrent and you are perfectly welcome to put it on a torrent site. I will seed it for as long as i can (probably through to the new year) though i dont have the fastest bandwidth.

Wow not really making it sound appealing am i? hahaha... yeah well its there if you want it. I havent put these vids up on youtube either.

The tracklist of the London show is:
1. Now I'm Nothing
2. Terrible Lie
3. 1,000,000
4. Heresy
5. March Of The Pigs
6. Reptile
7. The Becoming
8. I'm Afraid Of Americans
9. Burn
10. Part of Metal (w/ Gary Numan) (but my camera had already died so its literally a 20 sec clip where i pan around to see everyone clapping along)

The Tracklist of the Reading show is
1.Only
2.Wish
3.Dead Souls (Joy Division cover)
4.The Hand That Feeds
5.Head Like A Hole
6.Hurt (and this is the best version of Hurt i have ever seen in my life)

and yeah a load of bonus vids... most of their music vids, plus happiness in slavery @ woodstock and beautiful people with M.M.

As i said if you want it then send me an email

kojiro12000@hotmail.com

Hopefully hear from you soon smiling smiley

P.S. the file is 7.96GB and designed to be burnt onto a dual layer DVD disc etc..

Phew, I have this afternoon finished the edit of the whole gig - the last few tracks can be seen at [www.youtube.com]

In all it features footage shot by over 60 different people!

I'm not quite done though, as a couple of other clips have come to light since I did the earlier tracks so I have a few bits to integrate into the original edits but we're nearly there. I'm also hoping to bring in some of kojiro12000's footage if possible

Watch this space....
