Beware This Dinosaur Business Model

..."This is an industry that is under attack by innovation and will die one way or another. Some big-name musicians like Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor are going it alone, without a major label, and experimenting with different pay plans and content packages for consumers who can choose to buy direct or download for free..."

Brain Pickings

Hey, I am the author of Brain Pickings and just joined this forum so I could ask for some help and clarification – not really one to enjoy a "royal fuck up," so I'd like to honor NIN and their fans by making the appropriate corrections. Although the article is about album cover design and not about NIN specifically, I do believe design is only as good as the story it tells and now I'm curious myself about the NIN story -- so feel free to reply here, post in the comments on Brain Pickings, or write to me directly at brainpicker [at] brainpickings.org.

Thanks and sorry if I offended you guys, it was just ignorance, not disrespect -- although I'm obviously not an avid NIN fan myself, I have tremendous respect of the band's incredible innovation as I've followed it over the years.

Beat me to it!

Anna- great interview find!!

I ran a search and didn't see this posted anywhere so here is: Trent Reznor finds his happy place. There are also some other NIN links on the page, including streaming audio of the interview(which I find to be much more interesting than the written article). I find his honesty rare and refreshing.

Great interview, thanks.

I wonder whats going to happen at that show. Fuck.

Brainpicker,

I went back to your site and saw that it was edited, so I guess you found your answers before I was able to respond. You were confusing another album, Year Zero, with The Slip and some moments you referenced were out of sequence. Your site looks okay now.

Despite all this, I think it's cool of you to mention appreciation for the album art as I know Trent Reznor, Rob Sheridan, and everyone who puts a hand it in do a kick ass job and pay attention to every detail.

You don't have to apologize to me as I was not offended or disrespected in anyway. I just thought it was really funny that you were praising the efforts of another album which also had amazing album art.

A video my friend made, watch Arnold get beat mercilessly to the beat of Last. I bet Trent would get a laugh from this one.

The problem I have is what is the foreseeable future? 3 years, 5 years, 8 years? And, how can I guarantee my health through those years? Of course I don't blame Trent, I could never, however this is kind of sad.

here is an interview my wife found and showed me... its pretty old,, its from the magazine "Legends" issue 54, August 1995...self destruct era... written by some guy named Chris Heath. interesting read,, gives insight into TR's personal life. seems like the guy who wrote it is an amateur, but hopefully it's a factual interview. If you browse the site, they have a few reviews of "the fragile" and "things falling apart."
..enjoy..

Trent Reznor, Propheteer
The music industry is filled with too many whiners, complaining about infringement, arguing about distribution models, moaning about lost revenue that never existed in the first place. The biz is crying out for people who actually do things, and so far Trent Reznor is answering the call. From exploiting the wonders of BitTorrent to offering Ghosts I-IV and The Slip for free, Reznor has proven that you can embrace the future and stay comfortably paid for your bravery.
