I'm sure this has been asked before, but what synth was used to create that electronic sample laid under MOTP's drumbeat. The one that sounds kind of like metal being hit with a whip.

Have I heard this wrong....trent's scoring and acting in another movie?

WTF????

(Well...I realized I didn't hear this wrong after seeing it in the forums... but I still ask WTF?)

Does anybody know if the sampled screams in Twist (from the Purest Feeling bootleg) were taken from the film a Clockwork Orange?

It is indeed true, it becomes less random when you read Trent's newest post in General Discussion. Head over there.

This picture of Alessandro, no one's on about it.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Either he's on the new HTDA album or, more likely, he wanted to borrow some stuff for Soinoioioioioioio

I think it's more likely he wanted to use some kit for Sonoio. Hell it could be even a new collab between him and Trent, Trent's definitely exploring a lot of new ground these days!

QUESTION:

Does anyone have a rough idea how much the equipment in Trent's studio is worth. I imagine it'd be insane as a lot of it is quite old or extremely obscure but I was wondering if anyone who knows more about these sorts of things could give a rough estimate.

Hi, i just have one question: what are the best audio settings (and/or equalizer settings, etc...) to hear NIN?, let me explain, on my car i set the bass on 1 and treble on 3 when using my nin cds. For my ipod i use OFF. I don't have a very expensive equipment to listen to nin, but i would like a way to "standarize" between my various devices some sort of "NIN settings". Hope you understand what i try to do. A simple EQ settings also may help. I don't know much about audio, and i'm not an audiophile, i just want to hear NIN the best way in what i have. What do you think?. BTW, i was just thinking now, what audio equipment Trent uses to hear his own music?.

03/16/11 8:22 AM

TR likely uses expensive studio monitors to listen to his music while recording, mixing and mastering. on his own time, who knows?

the thing about EQ in your car, iPod, etc. is that you're changing the way the artist wanted you to hear the record. they already mastered every NIN disc to have proper amounts of bass, mids and treble in the right places. using EQ on your end may be desirable - it's certainly not wrong or stupid - but you need to realize you are altering what you are intended to hear.

otherwise, it's just about picking what sounds good to you. i doubt you should have the same settings in your car as on your iPod; the latter definitely doesn't have the rumble of wheels on pavement fighting against the bass, and the former definitely doesn't have shite little earbuds delivering you MP3s (or at least i hope it doesn't!).

I was wondering about this for quite a while, and I'll apologize in advance for asking such obvious and potentially dumb questions if so, but are the background vocals on Head Like A Hole and Complication saying Nine Inch Nails? Are they samples and am I just mishearing them altogether?

[www.youtube.com] (Just listen to seconds 17-24.)

[www.youtube.com] (It seems to sound just like what I've heard on Head Like A Hole during those few seconds by the time Complication reaches the 1:41 mark.)

Even if they aren't saying Nine Inch Nails, and even if they aren't the same exact sounds, they seem to sound very identical.

Nope. Interviews indicate the chanting comes from some African chants record or something (at least, that's what I remember) while the ones in Complication are...not the same thing at all.

03/24/11 9:43 AM

Yeah, African dancers/singers even got pictured in the video for HLAH, could be unrelated to origin of sample, but i agree with OnslaughtSix - i never got the same vibe from Complication smiling smiley

the only vocals in "Complication" are TR's, so i highly doubt they are the same sample — and i'm rather sure neither says "nine inch nails!"

Hey, I've just super recently gotten into NIN (about time!) My girlfriend sent me the following link and I'd love to know what song this is a clip of and figured if anyone would know it, it would be you guys. Can anyone help with the ID? Link below.

Thanks.

The clip itself appears to be just a short video of a girl by name of Yulia (which is what it says on that page). The closing credits say "music by Nine Inch Nails", it might be "I'm Afraid Of Americans" but maybe someone with more knowledge could help you.

I want to get a tattoo down my spine that say "Nothing Can Stop Me Now" but I thought it would be even more amazing if it was in Trent Reznor's handwriting. Does anyone know of any kind of fanmail address or email where I might have the slightest chance of getting in contact with someone about that??

Try his management company? I dunno.

That reminds me of a girl who got Trent to write some THTF lyrics for a tattoo back in 2009. Good luck, those are some great lyrics to tattoo.

Hi Trent,
I'm analysing the album TDS for a Sound Creation assignment for a music production course I'm doing at the moment. In particular I was looking at the track 'CLoser' and in particular your use of white noise at the beginning and end of the track and arpeggiators on the bridge sections. We have to find info on how the artists came up with particular sounds in the studio and what types of technology was used to create them. I can't find much about the actual proction of the record on the internet. Thanks a million and congrats on your newborn ; )

~Gary

P.S. Or if there's anyone else here that can help me with this I'd be very much obliged.

04/05/11 6:57 AM

Isn't the white noise in closer a sample?

04/07/11 6:12 AM

It might be, but it sounds (for lack of a better word) too "pitchy" for it to be a sample. It works too well...

You can get a really good listen to it on the version of Closer from Closer to God, where the last piano note fades out properly and there's a few seconds of that noise there.

04/08/11 3:28 AM

I thought it might be a sample myself but there doesn't seem to be anything in the way of loop points.

04/09/11 10:45 AM

that isn't white noise. it's extremely, objectively far from white noise. listen for yourself: Wiki white noise sample

i do think it loops, but it's really hard to tell where, and i think the panning masks it. have no idea where it's from or what it is; sounds like something backwards, though.

I'm trying to find a DVD or Bluray disc or even a download with "Dead Souls". I saw a few on youtube but was hopeing to get a whole concert, etc. All the DVD's, Blurays, etc that I can find don't have it in it sad smiley

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi

[forum.nin.com]

Go to DVD 8 - Year Zero - Dead Souls is in the Reading Festival performance.

04/09/11 10:50 AM

how about the Woodstock performance? there are many bootleg DVDs of it. i wouldn't waste cash buying a physical one, though — never pay for a bootleg! you can find it easily on torrent sites.

Once again, I know I've asked this before, but if anyone knows what type of synth/sampler made this, it'd be much appreciated if you'd let me know.

04/20/11 4:59 AM

Hello everyone,

more of a request than a question: Does anyone have the Rolling Stone issue, which said, that Year Zero sold around 480,000 copies in its first year and Trent's gross return was ~ $960,000? I think it was the April 2008 issue.

I'm writing a thesis on alternative marketing in the music industry and I can't find any reliable sources (using ninwiki is out of the question of course, as it is "a wiki" ). Of course if anyone could provide me with any other sources, I'd be extremely grateful.
