Random NIN Questions for December 2008

01/02/09 1:44 PM

i'm curious about something and it's been on my mind for some time now. i was rifling through my NIN collection and it ocurred to me that as a graphic artist, their artwork has coloured my work for the past few years, pretty much ever since the release of [With_Teeth]. now i'd heard when "Discipline" was released that Trent pretty much finished up the track and artwork on his laptop and e-mailed it to various radio stations and that this was what i was hearing on the radio at the time.

now i'm imagining Reznor sitting at a MacBook Pro tinkering with Photoshop, Lightroom & Logic or ProTools (and whatever he migh use for mastering a finished file). my problem is i'm too curious how he goes about this process… what filters or plugins he uses in Photoshop, what techniques specifically (for example, how the feel of the Ghosts images was attained since they definitely have a similarity from picture to picture and you can tell someone used very similar techniques to adjust, color-correct, and process each photograph). not only that but i'm really burning with desire (as a musician and engineer) to know what goes on on that little MacBook Pro i'm certain Trent sits in front of to lay out ideas, add finishing touches, begin the recording process, grab vocals for ideas that just came to him).

i'm sure the only way i can get the entire play by play would be to probably spend a day with Trent at home in LA or wherever he does his relaxing, but i'd figure as everyone on here is probably qualified to answer at least part of this essay-form "question" this would be the place to get this burning fire of curiosity quelled and quenched one and for all. if anyone has any help here please respond ASAP i'm itching ti put Photoshop, Lightroom, Logic and everything else i have to work to get back to getting my ideas down in visual and aural form (recently made the switch from PC to Mac and finishing up getting the software i'll need to produce).

thanks.

I was listening to a local radio station (104.5 Wrff) while getting ready to go to my sisters, and they played HURT then mentioned that it was part of a top 50 songs of all time countdown. So I went online to see what the top 50 songs of all time were (per the listeners) and if there were any others I liked and I came across this:

"NIN To Stop Touring?
Trent Reznor has said Nine Inch Nails' 2009 gigs will be their last "for the foreseeable future". Reznor offered little explanation as to why the band would stop touring, but did say he wanted to try a "different approach" to playing live. "This was an amazing tour and production - certainly the best thing I've ever been involved with and likely the final tour for Nine Inch Nails on this scale," he said. "The shows we have announced in 2009, and any more that may be announced, will be a completely different approach with some different personnel, and will likely be the last for the foreseeable future."
*

Now I know Mr. Rez(nor) had mentioned that they were going to be doing a different style of tour in 2009 but will it be the last chance to see NIN live altogether?

I hope not, but I'm sure if that's his decision it's with damn good reason (like he's exhausted/just plain pooped)...so...just wondering... smiling smiley thanks. (Jen)

I wouldn't rule out any future touring from NIN. They're doing Australia, US amphitheaters, and a Euro tour this year. Remember that he said the same thing in 2006 and 2007.

I was just wondering what you guys think Down in it is actually about?

In this video Trent says it's a song about fucking

This year. NZ and Oz in February, US amphitheaters in April, Europe in the summer.

What type, kind, breed, or such is the snake seen in the NIN official "Hurt" video? Where was it filmed btw? Does anyone know definitively? Much thanks.

I'm sorry. I take that back. I don't know why i remembered that as being in NC. I was moderately upset because it was in the middle of VA and I was at a disabvantage as being all the frick up North and several hours drive away from Charlottsville.

XP Sorry! Ignore my question... I have a better one to ask (one that does not make me sound like an idiot or pissy) because I know some places had to wait UBER long for NIN to come. Next time that NIN comes, I'll have my own car, so hehehe... I could go to CANADA and see NIN! Muhahaha!!!

I won't die by the fact NIN will be over, i'm sure Mr. Reznor does not wish for anyone's death.

Hey, everyone.

Well I'm new to the NIN website and pretty psyched about it. Wish I had done it earlier. Anyways, I'm an experienced visual artist that's been a fan of Nine Inch Nails since I was a kid and just recently got into producing industrial music and currently getting familiar with the software and the creative process involved with the medium. So I wanted to ask if there is anyway of contacting Trent directly just so I could get some insight on how he came about it. I love NIN's sound and I just want to see what process Trent goes to create such great sound design. Lol, I want to learn from the master himself you might say. If anyone has any info, please let me know. Thanks!

Amphitheater as in outside standin room only?

01/09/09 10:56 PM

Amphitheaters—from my experience— typically have seating up front, then there's a lawn area in the back where you can sit (or stand).

01/10/09 1:11 PM

So, this maybe a good chance to have an actual front row seat? Wow! I hope NIN comes to Atlanta, GA after May (Baby is due May 10) so I can go.

What is the best way to get an autograph with out being a crazy stalker? Waiting by the bus? Does NIN have a bus? I think I may just make a big ass banner that says, "Please sign my CD cover" and hold it out when I'm in the next pit.....

01/10/09 7:35 PM

I was wondering, I joined this site after the Ghost era (fancy that) and I was wondering if anyone knew what instraments they used during concerts during Ghosts? I was told they had a Base (uber-big cello) and I thought I saw a picture from the photo journal of a glockenspeil (looks like a upright bedframe with long pipes attached, it's sounds like odd bells) but it could have been part of the light works, I couldn't tell.

01/10/09 9:25 PM

Upright bass, marimba, glockenspiel, chimes, "junk" kit, melodica, recorder

Oh, a glockenspiel is totally different from chimes. Trent plays a glockenspiel during "The Good Soldier." Those are chimes set up by the "junk kit" and the marimba.

Most amphitheatres have a small GA pit in front, with assigned seating behind it, then a hill in the back for general admission.

01/11/09 8:19 PM

does anyone know where i can find the picture of trent facing the red screen with his arms above his head against the screen? i think its from the "and all that could of been" dvd and i think i might of saw it on a shirt......not the cover of "beside you in time", but it kinda looks it. help me find it. please

01/12/09 2:32 PM

my question would be if he is a robot or alien,

01/13/09 12:28 PM
